HOFBAUER CUP 2016. ?One design Class Elan 350 ??Yachting in Croatia Sailing Team #sailingschoolcroatia #skippertraining #hofbauercup
The family sailing crew of Element, living aboard a Catana 471 Catamaran while spending their first Winter off-season exploring Turkey, make their final inland tour of Turkey to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Cappadocia, a semi-arid region known for its distinctive "fairy chimneys," tall, cone-shaped rock formations clustered in Monks Valley. During their visit to Cappadocia, they explore an open air museum with Bronze Age homes carved into valley walls by troglodytes (cave dwellers) and later used for refuge and churches by early Christians. Later that day the crew of Element come across a pottery shop where the girls get a hand at trying traditional pottery making. The following morning, the crew wake up early for a hot air balloon tour of the valley, witnessing the amazing panoramic landscape and the stunning colours with the morning sunrise. I have yet to meet anyone more inspirational than Dustin Reynolds when it comes to turning personal tragedy and financial ruin into a completely new path in life. Hit by a drunk driver and left for dead on the side of the road with his arm ripped from his body and life multiple threatening injuries, Dustin survived but the mounting health bills buried him financially. He made the decision to sell up and walk away from the business's he had diligently built, to rediscover a new life on the ocean in a $12,000 yacht with a goal of circumnavigating the planet. His story, determination and passion for deep connections with people is powerful and inspiring. This is a relatively strong Hatha Yoga practice for 50 minutes. I would highly recommend to add 5-10 minutes Shavasana - full resting pose at the end of the session. I am talking you into relaxation and you can stay for as long as it feels right for you. Please remember if any of the poses are not accessible for your body - don't force yourself into them. Just swap the poses out that are not feeling right or have a moments rest. This a good sequence for the morning or during the day. If you do it in the evening, make sure you have a decent rest after the practice. You just need a mat for your practice, perhaps a couple of yoga blocks. For Shavasana you might want to have a cushion for under the head and a blanket to cover yourself with. For more information about Heartspace Yoga you can check out Silke's website www.heartspace.nz. This is a a stronger Yin Yoga practice for 60 minutes with longer held poses that work on the fascia, joint and ligament health. A Yin practice really stretches your body beyond the more vigorous exercise regimes and stimulates places in your body that you usually can't access with a faster yoga flow. This a good sequence for any time of the day. I personally prefer to practice yin towards the afternoon or evening as it helps me to relax. In a Yin Yoga it is really recommended to support the body with as many props as you need as it helps the body to relax into the longer held poses. For this sequence you can have a yoga bolster or alternatively rolled up towels or blankets, cushions and or yoga blocks. Just see what works for you and what you have around home. For Shavasana you might want to have a cushion for under the head and a blanket to cover yourself with. For more information about Heartspace Yoga you can check out Silke's website www.heartspace.nz. Continuing talking about how we got things off the ground, I answer a few questions I received. This was interesting for me (and I hope you) to go back to the beginning. It has been something I was passionate about for so long and now living the dream of running King Propulsion!
Velvetfish are small, shallow bottom residents, who's skin has a velvet texture. They are generally flattened in shape, with small pelvic fins, and a fleshy pad under the head. There are about 40 species, and some have venomous spines! The Velvetfish is a rare and interesting species and some of its adaptations. His adaptation meas he has an extremely long dorsal fin and that dorsal fin is used to break up the outline of the fish in the habitat in which it lives. Their dorsal fin sometimes stretches all the way from in front of the eyes to the tail! Amazing capture by OceanVizion!
So... Donna and I decided that taking sailing lessons seemed like a great idea. Who knows how far this crazy thing will go? Our lesson with Gord from Starlight Sailing Adventrues was so much more than we had imagined. We envisioned that he would take us out sailing and explain a few of the more rudimentary aspect of what sailing was about and maybe - MAYBE - we would get to haul on a line or something like that. Oh no - Gord had bigger things in mind for us! After our safety briefing he started the engine and then described how to cast off, putting Donna at the helm. He taught her how to exit the dock and then got me to haul the main sail and within a few minutes we were sailing baby! Gord showed us how to adjust the genoa (that's the big triangular sail forward of the mast) and the mainsail (that's the one aft of the mast), how to sail upwind, how to heave to (although that was admittedly due to not listening to instructions on our part), how to tack, how to sail downwind 'wing on wing' as well as in a reach (yeah, I still don't really know what that means yet), how to navigate using the GPS charts, how to interpret the marker buoys that dotted the harbour, and how to dock. Yes. It was a LOT for an introductory lesson. And did I mention that we saw porpoises? Because we DID!! One comment: the air was SUPER thick with forest fire smoke so that's not fog you're seeing. Also, this was a very simple video so our apologies for the amateurish nature of it. I used our action camera in its waterproof housing so there's no audio for example. We had bigger things to focus on - like learning how to sail. Future videos will likely be more full featured -- like including our voices. And yes, there WILL be future videos! We will be taking our Basic Cruising Standard instruction (a 5 day, 4 night sail course) and then our intermediate celestial navigation course with Gord as well. We want to move on to get our intermediate and advanced cruising standards and ultimately - who knows? - our offshore cruising standard. With that under our belts, there's no limit to where we could sail! But we have to walk before we can run. This was a lot to take in for one day, but we are INCREDIBLY excited to continue this journey. If you want to find out more about Gord or S/V Starlight, or to maybe even get your own adventure started head on over to https://www.starlightsailing.com/ for all the details.

Kayleen talks a bit about working with us to create her customized Zeballos skis, which include a custom marquetry portrait of her sailboat in her favourite colour, teal. So, who is Kayleen? We met under quite unusual circumstances. Our buddy and team-rider Ty Turner introduced us to Kayleen as his new girlfriend while he was hospitalized by a serious skydiving accident. Since then we have gotten to know her as an incredibly patient problem-solver who leads with her heart. Her focus is never deterred by a challenge, and she isn't afraid to get dirt under her fingernails. We sometimes describe her as a "Jill of all trades." She is dedicated to learning how to maintain and repair their sailboat. Professionally she is a commercial diver and a published author. Recently she has taken to sharing some of her experiences on the Youtube channel All About Spray. Check out their videos for real-talk about boat life and some beautiful footage of adventures at sea aboard "Footloose." Links below. Lastly, perhaps her most impressive attribute (we admit our bias) is that Kayleen is living the dream as a snow multi-disciplinarian! She switches with ease between skiing, snowboarding and splitboarding. We get pretty fired up thinking about all the amazing places she will take her Kindreds. Big thanks again to Ivan and Grayden from VisInc for taking meticulous care of the video craft!!
