Our Hawaii cruise started with two days on Oʻahu — and it set the tone for the whole trip. Day one was the travel day, followed by an afternoon at Waikiki Beach and a visit to Pearl Harbor. If you haven't been to the memorial before, it's worth giving yourself more time than you think you'll need — it stays with you. Day two took us to Kualoa Ranch on the windward coast. It's a working cattle ranch that also happens to be one of the most recognisable film locations in the world — Jurassic Park fans will know exactly why. We'd heard good things and it didn't disappoint. This is part one of our full Hawaii cruise series aboard Pride of America. If you're planning a similar trip, hopefully this gives you a useful sense of what the first couple of days can look like. 🔔 Subscribe for the rest of the series — Maui, the Big Island, and Kauaʻi still to come.
► Wednesday, May 6th, 12:34 p.m., heading for Martinique ► When you dream of an Atlantic crossing, you mostly picture the night watches, dolphins bow-riding the keel, and sunsets out in the middle of the Atlantic. Much less the days spent provisioning the boat. Yet even before setting sail, it’s almost an expedition in its own right. In Portugal, we started by loading everything that needed to last: canned goods, pasta, rice, dry provisions, snacks, and above all, liters and liters of fresh water. 240 liters, to be exact. Day after day, the boat filled up with bags, crates, and carefully arranged supplies stored between the compartments and the galley on board. Perishables, on the other hand, were loaded at the last moment before departure: fruit, vegetables, and a few delicious dishes prepared by the French restaurant La Villa - meant to keep us going during the first days at sea until Las Palmas. My father had prepared a long, two-page provisioning list. And yet, that didn’t stop us from forgetting… a grater and a “rasp” (fine grater). On the other hand, there was no missing bread. One of the crew members seems to consider it absolutely essential to the success of the crossing, so that by the time we were in Las Palmas, a large part of the restocking had turned into a stockpile of bread in all its forms. As for me, I also thought it essential to bring a few hydrating face masks. Everyone has their priorities before an Atlantic crossing. ► After days of preparation, waiting, and final tweaks at the dock, we finally set sail. And honestly, it feels so good to not be tied up to the dock anymore! ► Sign up for our newsletter and win a free two-month subscription to Multihulls World by clicking here: https://bit.ly/48JP1Vk ► Become a FREE SUBSCRIBER to Multihulls World's YouTube page now - https://www.youtube.com/c/MultihullsWorld ► Log on to our website to discover over 600 multihulls tests! Welcome aboard the all-new FP55! In this video, we take you on a full walkthrough of this stunning luxury catamaran, exploring its modern design, spacious living areas, impressive flybridge, and premium cabins.
► We meet at Port des Minimes in La Rochelle; on pontoon 20, one of the berths reserved for multihulls, I quickly spot the grey hulls and orange UV strip before being welcomed aboard by the skipper. ► Éric Pilato, 62, was born in La Rochelle and, entrepreneur though he was - and still is - he has always lived by the sea. Today, freshly graduated with a 200 GT Master’s certificate obtained in Belgium and Marseille, he operates - and enjoys - his Excess 11. ► “I wanted to buy a second-hand sailboat. My wife told me: ‘I’m warning you, if you don’t buy a catamaran, I’m not coming aboard.’ So, a multihull it would be… Eventually I came across Excess 11 #151, one of the last models equipped with the self-tacking jib, which was due to be displayed at the 2023 Grand Pavois boat show. It was a three-cabin version whose layout suited me perfectly. I asked Christopher, the dealer, whether the catamaran was available for sale. The answer was yes, so I bought it and was quickly able to secure the marina berth I had already applied for a few years earlier. Today, I operate the catamaran and have built a relationship with the brand’s management team, first as a contributing owner and then as a brand ambassador. One day - I’m not really sure why - I asked Thibaut (de Montvalon, Excess Managing Director, editor’s note) whether anyone had ever completed a solo Atlantic crossing aboard an Excess 11. He told me that, to his knowledge, no one had…” ► Éric, who has had the opportunity to sail aboard the Ultim trimaran Sodebo, therefore decided to embark on his own Route du Rhum. He will leave La Rochelle just after the 2026 Grand Pavois and sail directly to Pointe-à-Pitre, joining the race fleet that will depart Saint-Malo three weeks later - with the aim of arriving at roughly the same time. ► The skipper has also decided to establish a true passage time by not using his engines: a genuine solo, non-stop sailing transatlantic crossing. ► Preparations for Skiboo 2 and her skipper are already underway — solo training sessions, catamaran optimisation… Multihulls World will of course be following this adventure for you! In this episode of the Sailing and Cruising the East Coast of the United States podcast, hosts Bela Musits and Mike Wasserman welcome accomplished sailor and author Mark Gabrielson. Mark is known for participating in "Corinthian" sailboat races—meaning strictly amateur events with no paid crew or captain—and for his two highly regarded maritime history books. The conversation dives into Mark's literary works, Deer Isle's Undefeated America's Cup Crews: Humble Heroes from a Downeast Island and Corinthian Resolve: The Story of the Marion-Bermuda Race. As a natural storyteller, Mark shares fascinating insights into the history of sailing, the nuances of racing, and the unique beauty of the Maine coast. From his first memories of sailing as a five-year-old in Barnegat Bay, New Jersey, where running aground was a fun way to learn, to discussing the future of the sport, Mark covers a broad spectrum of the sailing experience. He emphasizes the importance of early positive social experiences and accessibility, noting that sailing is unique in its ability to offer both a quick, easy entry and a lifetime of subtle refinement for those who want a deeper challenge. The episode offers a wealth of knowledge for anyone with a passion for maritime history, East Coast cruising, or the enduring appeal of life on the water. Key Takeaways & Highlights The Definition of "Corinthian": Learn the true meaning behind amateur sailing races and why this tradition is so important for the sport's spirit. Maine, the Sailor's Paradise: Mark highlights Merchant Row, near Stonington, Maine (the top lobster port by value in the US), as one of the most beautiful sailing locations he's ever seen, despite the numerous lobster pots. Seamanship & Safety: Get expert tips on handling common challenges like freeing a fouled propeller from a lobster pot line and essential man-overboard safety procedures using a towed dinghy. The Marion Bermuda Race: Mark shares his experiences navigating this 645-mile offshore race using only a sextant and nautical almanac (celestial navigation), and winning his class. The Therapeutic Nature of Sailing: Mark discusses how sailing provided a vital therapeutic escape after the personal impact of 9/11, highlighting the emotional benefits of getting out on the water.
