Sail trim is an important part of learning to sail, because left to its own devices, a sail will flap like a flag. We call that luffing. And luffing is not only noisy, it will eventually damage the sail. Also, a luffing sail isn't driving the boat forward. So let’s make it stop by pulling it in. That’s called trimming the sail. To trim the main, pull in the mainsheet. To trim the jib, pull in the leeward jib sheet—the line farther away from the wind.
