After making the biggest decision of our lives, we are finally hitting the road and heading towards to East coast of the USA to look for our liveaboard sailboat. But first; many renovations, downsizing, and goodbyes. We had many projects that we needed to do on our house to make it ready to be put up for sale. Canadian Ken and I had to go check her out - she is about an hour away up in Winterport, ME, along the Penobscot River, an hour's sail to the open bay. She's hull #1 of the venerable Southern Cross 39 sailboats, designed by Thomas Gillmer (designer of the Allied Seawind Ketch, the 1st fiberglass sailboat to circumnavigate the globe!), and built by C.E. Ryder down in Rhode Island in 1981. She was factory finished, which is nice as many of these were sold as kits. She also has an Airex cored hull, a relatively new method at the time, perfected by C.E Ryder (it's closed cell Airex), deemed to be very strong and durable. The decks are balsa cored. This Southern Cross 39 is not perfect. She needs some work, but it appears to be mostly cosmetic and the pricing reflects this. These boats usually sell for much, much more - at least double this asking price. So, if you're a DIY sailor looking for a boat that needs a little TLC - but could probably take you around the world as is - this boat might be for you! She is an easy-handling cruising catamaran in a good condition with 3 cabin's, master cabin has a luxury shower. She is registered (tax paid) in Kenya and has the right documentation. This model can be called a Voyage 38 or a Maxim 38 because Maxim Yachts, from Durban South Africa, provided Voyage Yachts with the Voyage 38. These performance cruisers were built in South Africa by Maxim and distributed through Voyage Yachts. The Maxim 380 was the winner of the 2005 Cruising World Best New Catamaran under 40 Ft . The 380 got the judges’ attention with its four-burner stove, and added headroom in the galley. There are 6 solar panels with a total of 1100 wats on top of the afterdeck. They give the perfect shade and are very functional. There is no noisy generator on board. Ray marine equipment includes a good autopilot and radar.
