In this episode, I interview Carter Yepsen. Carter wrote to us back in episode 22 asking for some tips and suggestions as he was getting ready to do his first bareboat sailing charter with his wife. Carter is a sailor and his wife is not, so he wanted to make sure they both had a good experience, as his goal is to make bareboat chartering a regular event. Carter sent us an email post charter saying that after a bit of a sleep-deprived first two days, the charter went well. And, they are planning their next charter. I asked Carter if he would be a guest on the podcast and share with our listeners how the bareboat charter went and things he learned. Let’s dive right into the interview with Carter. Our course was wherever the winds would take us as we had no agenda. We experienced the notorious Chesapeake Bay chop, light winds, no wind, glass seas, motoring, ghosting, thunderstorms, reefing, wind and rain, with very comfortable sailing in all these conditions. The Seawind 1260 was everything we thought it would be. We learned a lot chartering the Seawind 1260 and it gave us a better understanding of the various options which changed some of our original thoughts. The trip gave us an opportunity to try everything, the transom ladder, the outside shower, the cockpit grill, cockpit sink, sleeping, lounging, cooking, anchoring, forward lounge and the wonderful cockpit. #135 ✍️Comme isolée de ses sœurs, au nord-est des BVI, se trouve une exception géologique, Anegada ! Son nom vient de l’espagnol, « Tierra anegada » qui signifie Terre engloutie, et pour cause, cet atoll corallien à fleur d’eau de 19 km de long sur un peu moins de 5 km de large, culmine à 9 mètres seulement d’altitude. Les 15 nœuds de vent nous ont tranquillement orienté vers la deuxième plus grande île de l’archipel. Tout doucement, guidés par les tâches qui dénotent de ce béryl jardin aquatique, nous avançons aux échos du sondeur. Blacky semble posé sur une immense plaque marbrée de bleu, liserée de blanc et ourlée de vert. Le cadre se prête merveilleusement à la découverte, en kayak, à pied, même en mini-moke avec nos amis qui nous ont fait l’agréable surprise de louer ce petit pick-up pour un tour complet de la belle ! Et avec la nouvelle application que nous avons téléchargée, Windy Map, les sentiers n’ont plus de secrets ! On se sent bien, on savoure les instants et on s’enthousiasme de tout ce que la nature offre à nos yeux. Les flamants rose perchés sur leurs longues pattes, flegmatiques, peuvent jouir de leur protection dans les marron lacs d’eau salée. Chassés jusqu’à l’extinction pour leur chair et leurs plumes, ils ont été réintroduits sur l’île avec 22 oiseaux en 1992 et se comptent aujourd’hui par centaines. D’ailleurs, il est bien plus probable sur ce petit bout de terre où les couleurs se coordonnent parfaitement, de croiser aux abords des chemins ensablés, un de ces échassiers, des chèvres sauvages ou encore des ânes peu craintifs, plutôt que des bipèdes en minorité ! Nous quittons les lambis et les kilomètres de plage pour rejoindre Beef island et la baie de Trellis. Ici, rien d’extraordinaire, mais l’abris y est correct et les bateaux n’y restent que peu de temps, juste celui de récupérer des passagers arrivant par avion. L’étape nous permet de faire du repérage, car dans une dizaine de jours, nous recevons nos bananas précurseurs à bord pour une initiation au grand voyage, une première sur Black Lion. Alors, entre deux mouillages, on s’active à quelques bricolages. Un calibrage de sondeur, une vérification d’antifouling, un peu de couture et surtout, une révision de notre guideau Quick qui a de plus a plus de difficulté à faire son job correctement ! Le Tigra que nous avions sur Pirates. com, nous semblait bien mieux approprié à notre utilité. Le plus délicat est quand notre ancre est bien enfouie ou juste, même que légèrement, accrochée à du roc, comme c’est souvent le cas ici. Là, la bête peine, chauffe, et disjoncte ! Pour les charters des BVI, le problème de treuil ne risque pas se poser. Ils ne vivent que pour les corps morts et pour ne pas être moqueurs ! Quel régal d’être spectateurs de quelques prises de bouée ratées qui rappellent à nos souvenirs, notre époque néophytes ! Tout est dans le regard, dans l’observation, dans le désir de saisir la poésie de l’instant. J’ai presque envie de dire que c’est une aptitude que l’Homme a perdue. Plus encore, un don qui s’entretient en harmonie avec la nature. J’adore visionner les montages de mon cinéaste. Les moments de grâce qui inspirent le bien-être et l’émotion, juste par la transcription d’un regard, d’un mouvement, merveilleusement mis en scène par l’accord de quelques notes.
