The Lahakai sailboat is a 34” custom built steel sailboat, made in 1997 in France and sailed all the way to the shores of Brazil. It was then brought to Niteroi where she sat completely neglected in a boat club for 10 years. And that’s when we found her! There is so much more to come so remember to subscribe to Lahakai! ➡️ WEEKLY VIDEOS EVERY SUNDAY AT 11AM WHO ARE WE? We are Luke, Lori and Leon :) And the Lahakai is an ongoing project to not only create an environmentally friendly sailboat and change our lifestyles but also get back to the thing we love the most; art. Together we are videographers, graphic designers, artists and a dog. And we want to be able to get in touch with our skills to see how we can use them to learn new things, help the environment and change the way we perceive the world. We want to stop talking about how we can make a change - and do it! Starting with building the Lahakai! In the last weeks, our team put six bilge stringers to add strength and stiffness to the hull. For each one, we follow the same procedure: The first step is to create a template and transfer it to the carefully selected piece of oak, which we shape into form with circular saws, planers and sanders. Then our team uses a mix of linseed oil, tar and chalk to seal the gaps between the bilge stringer and frames. In the meantime, the piece of oak is being steamed and finally bent and bolted into its place. Video edit: Karoline Hill Music: Buckeye Bonzai by Vans in Japan
