With our three sailing dogs back onboard, we set off on our longest passage yet: 40 hours across the Mediterranean, two nights at sea, fiery sunsets, star-filled skies, and the steady rhythm of open water carrying us towards a brand new continent. Halfway along the Tunisian coast, we tried to drop anchor for a short rest — only to be told by the coastguard that anchoring wasn’t allowed. Tired but determined, we pushed on through a second night passage before finally reaching Monastir Marina. At last, Kaia is safely tied up in her new winter berth in Tunisia, where we begin life as full-time liveaboards in North Africa. A strong start today for the 49er teams at the Olympic qualifier in Lanzarote. Robert Dickson and Sean Waddilove Team Dickson Waddilove 49er Ireland topped the Day 1 leader-board with Ryan Seaton and Séafra Guilfoyle Out2Win Ryan & Séafra placing an 11-8-8 for the day. Conditions off Playa Blanca in the straits between Lanzarote and Fuerteventura were very unpredictable in the fresh trade-wind conditions with added ocean swell. “It was very tricky with the wind coming off the mountains so a ‘head out of the boat’ day but all-in-all, a great start to the regatta,” commented James O’Callaghan, Irish Sailing’s Performance Director. “There’s a long way to go in this regatta but we couldn’t have asked for a better start.” We'll be posting updates here daily.
