EVERY SAILOR needs a BLACK POWDER winch mount CANNON! (Even if you don't "need" one ... there is no denying that they are BAD ASS! Well thanks to HARBORBURN Cannon Co. we were ablet to pick up our customized cannon at the Annapolis Boat Show! Here comes the BOOM! A signal cannon, also known as a salute cannon, is a small cannon, typically less than two feet in length, used for signaling and saluting rather than for military combat. These cannons were historically used on ships and on land to announce arrivals, warn of danger, or signal distress. They are also commonly used for celebratory events, such as starting sailboat races or marking significant milestones. HARBORBURN makes the only legit, useable, black-powder, muzzle-loading, fuse-lighting, loud-blasting signal cannon on the market. Hand-stamped and customized for your boat name, the ‘Herrington Mk. 1’ cannons are useable artwork and will last a lifetime. HARBORBURN started as a passion project between four sailors who wanted a real, black-powder signal cannon for their own boats, but nothing was available…so we made one! And now it’s available to boats and cannon-enthusiasts alike. You may recognize Andy from the YouTube Sailing Channel 59 North. 59 North is a sailing company founded by Andy Schell and Mia Karlsson, specializing in offshore sailing adventures and education. This drone footage was taken in Raja Ampat, Indonesia. You can see reef manta rays swimming around very close to the surface of the water. They are likely feeding.

The ride out of the Narrows of Strangford Lough to the Irish Sea always makes me simile. Racing out with wind against tide can make for some serious lump at the bar mouth so the crew always has to be ready to react as the boat bounced up and over the waves. The lump as not as bad as expect during the exit of the 2022 South Rock Race, the J109 Going to Red had its first offshore hit out against Hindsight and came through with flying colours. The boys were hitting 9 knots with a strong push of outgoing tide as the raced toward the Bar Buoy before taking the left turn to head up the coast to the South Rock. The team on redline racing harding skipped a beat as they bounced off the top of a couple of short share waves. The trip back in should be a lot flatter as wind and tide will be heading in the same direction. As always the South Rock race was a load of fun, there is nothing like getting out for an offshore bash. The team at Bottom Up Boats hope you are enjoying our shorts bits of some our racing trips as our J109 went bouncing over the strangford lough bar during the 2022 South Rock Race.
