After spending six months sailing completely off-grid through Indonesia, we're back in Malaysia giving our 39-foot sailboat, Stella, some much-needed TLC! ⛵️🔧 Living on a sailboat in some of the most remote places in the world has definitely taught us a thing or two, especially that NOTHING is ever as easy as you think it's going to be! This week, we're tackling some of our biggest boat upgrades yet! From installing a brand-new Lofrans anchor windlass after our old one failed during a terrifying 45-knot squall, to picking up our new outboard, upgrading to an electric toilet (finally, no more pumping!), and installing speakers throughout Stella. Of course, what we thought would be a few simple jobs quickly turned into days of unexpected challenges, problem-solving, and a whole lot of patience. This week, we’re leaving the sailboat life behind… 🇺🇸✈️ After nearly six months sailing through Indonesia and a 70-hour nonstop passage back to Malaysia, we safely tucked Stella away in Langkawi and started a completely different kind of journey — nearly 40 hours of traveling halfway around the world to America! We’re trading remote islands, fishing and life at sea for family time, American football, dirt bikes, boat shopping, Maryland blue crabs, a trip to the shooting range and, of course, plenty of food. 🇺🇸 It was especially meaningful getting to spend time with my Uncle Jeff, a retired FBI Special Agent and 9/11 first responder who is currently battling cancer and advocating for better healthcare and cancer screening for fellow 9/11 responders. After 62 hours at sea, we finally make the crossing from Indonesia back into Malaysia. This passage takes us across the Malacca Strait, sailing day and night, dodging huge container ships, keeping watch through the darkness, reefing the sails when needed, and slowly watching the miles tick down toward Langkawi. There’s something pretty special about being offshore for days at a time — no land in sight, just ocean, sunsets, sunrises, night watches, and the constant routine of keeping Stella moving safely forward. By the end of the crossing, we’re exhausted, excited, and very ready to see land again. Once we reach Malaysia, the next step is to anchor Stella, get some sleep, officially check into the country, get our passports stamped, and prepare the boat for what’s coming next. What is it really like to live on a sailboat in the middle of nowhere? One of the best fishing days we’ve ever had from Stella Overboard! 🎣⛵️ After months of sailing through remote Indonesia, I finally hooked into the fish I’d been dreaming about — a massive mahi mahi. After an epic fight, plenty of yelling, and Jesse and Sunny cheering me on, we got it aboard and went straight into a fresh catch-and-cook with grilled fillets and ceviche. But the fishing wasn’t over yet… Only hours later, while making our way north toward Malaysia, we were hit by one of the worst squalls we’ve had in a long time. With full sails up, winds suddenly reaching over 40 knots, a tender strap breaking, and even a jerry can flying overboard, things got chaotic fast. And somehow, right in the middle of all of it… something else took the fishing line. Two massive fish, a stocked freezer, one very happy sailing cat, and another unforgettable day living life at sea. This week aboard Stella Overboard, boat life throws a few more problems our way. From discovering the main pin holding our boom to the mast had started working its way out, to watermaker issues, outboard problems, lazy jack repairs, and the never-ending reality of fixing things in remote places… this episode is a pretty accurate look at what cruising life is really like. Luckily, we’ve learned that sailing is mostly about figuring things out with what you have, carrying as many spares as possible, doing a little creative jimmy-rigging, searching the internet, and accepting help from the amazing people you meet along the way. This week we’re chasing swell through some of the most remote islands in Indonesia. 🌊⛵ With the waves still pumping, Jesse somehow manages to damage his board… which isn’t exactly ideal when you’re hundreds of miles from the nearest surf shop. Luckily, we remember there’s a nearby surf resort with a few boards and decide to see if we can find him a replacement before the swell disappears. With a new board under his feet, we squeeze in one final session before heading back out to sea for an overnight passage up the coast, chasing the swell to our next surf spot. Along the way we cross the equator, hook a tuna as the sun goes down, and prepare Stella for more than 30 hours at sea. Our friends Cai and Georgia have flown all the way from Australia to join us for a taste of life at sea, and they're quickly discovering that living on a sailboat is about much more than crystal-clear water and tropical islands. Before we can relax, there's always another job to tackle, and this time it's our watermaker. Living off-grid means every system on board is important, especially when it provides our drinking water, cooking water, washing water, and allows us to stay at sea for weeks without needing a marina. Once the jobs are done, it's finally time for some adventure! We sail through changing weather, explore a stunning new anchorage, enjoy fresh fish caught straight from the ocean, and introduce Georgia to the incredible underwater world on her very first scuba dive. With Jesse being a qualified rescue diver, we keep the dive shallow and safe while showing her just how magical the reefs around Indonesia can be. From sailing through rough conditions to discovering one of the most beautiful anchorages we've ever found, this episode is a perfect reminder of why we chose this lifestyle. 🌊 What started as a normal surf session turned into one of our favourite days in Indonesia. After meeting a group of surfers while exploring the Telos Islands, we invited them aboard Stella, our 39-foot sailboat, for a day chasing remote waves that can only be reached by boat. With surfboards loaded, sails raised, and the handline out hoping to catch dinner, we set off in search of perfect lefts, rights, and a full day of adventure. From sharing life aboard our floating home to surfing crystal-clear tropical waves, fishing, cooking lunch at anchor, and ending the day with an unforgettable Indonesian sunset, this is exactly why we chose life at sea.
