Six months ago, we bought a sailboat… even though we barely knew how to sail. What was supposed to be a calm sail quickly turned into a wild birthday at sea… and the captain (me!) definitely didn’t see this surprise coming. 🎂🌊 After weeks of storms, jellyfish stings, and sleepless nights, we finally started making our way back down from Thailand to Malaysia before Jesse flies back to the mines. What started as a simple sail to drop our friends off in Koh Lanta quickly turned into one of the roughest days we’ve ever had at sea. We set off in high spirits — five friends onboard, blue skies, and a fresh catch for dinner — but as the day went on, the weather closed in fast. By the time we reached the coast, the wind was howling at 40 knots, waves were breaking over the bow, and our anchor started dragging. From jellyfish stings to boat wrecks to going topless in Thailand — this sail had everything. We left Port Takola Marina and made our way to the famous Phi Phi Island, where chaos meets paradise. Eight unforgettable days at sea We left Malaysia and sailed across the Andaman Sea to Thailand — right in the middle of monsoon season. It was a gamble, but luck was on our side. The skies cleared, the winds held steady, and we had perfect sailing conditions for our first international crossing aboard Stella, our 39-foot sailboat. We’ve upgraded from a van to a sailboat… and believe it or not, our 39-foot sailboat is the biggest home we’ve ever had. After years of living in a Volkswagen and then a Troopy, van life prepared us for the challenges of boat life — small spaces, rationing water, fixing things ourselves, and living off-grid.
