We thought we had found the perfect anchorage in remote Indonesia… Empty surf breaks, crystal clear water, hidden mangrove rivers, and not another boat in sight. After days of heavy squalls and unpredictable weather, we sailed Stella deep into one of the most remote island chains we’ve explored so far hoping to find shelter, good surf, and a safe place to wait out the storms. And at first… it felt like paradise. We spent our days exploring the mangroves by dinghy, searching for empty reef breaks, surfing perfect waves, and fishing for food while living completely off-grid aboard our sailboat. But everything changed when our friends flew the drone over the bay… and spotted a massive crocodile swimming right beneath them. Suddenly this beautiful tropical anchorage started feeling a lot different. This part of Indonesia is not only known for crocodiles, but also dangerous squalls, strong currents, remote jungle islands, and some of the highest malaria cases in the region. In this episode: 🌊 Surfing remote Indonesia ⛵ Living full-time on a sailboat 🐊 Exploring crocodile-filled mangroves 🌧️ Sailing through storms and squalls 🎣 Spearfishing and fishing for food 🏝️ Off-grid island life in Indonesia 🛶 Dinghy adventures through remote jungle rivers From perfect empty surf to crocodile encounters and chaotic weather, this quickly became one of the wildest adventures we’ve had aboard Stella. We bought a sailboat to chase empty waves around the world… and this might be exactly why. 🌴🌊⛵️ In this episode of Stella Overboard, we sail deep into remote Indonesia searching for untouched surf breaks, crystal clear water, and hidden islands far from civilization. What started as just another anchorage quickly turned into one of the craziest surf discoveries we’ve had so far. With our friends joining us aboard, we score pumping reef breaks, massive barrels, fresh spearfished dinner, tropical sunsets, and the kind of adventure that reminds us why we left normal life behind to live full-time on a sailboat. But life out here isn’t always paradise… squalls, strong winds, reef passes, crocodiles, malaria, and zero phone signal are all part of sailing through remote Indonesia. If you love sailing, surfing, travel documentaries, van life, off-grid living, freediving, fishing, adventure couples, and remote island exploration — welcome aboard Stella. 🌺 ⛵ Boat: Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 39i “Stella” 📍 Filmed in Remote Indonesia 🎥 New episodes every week 💙 A huge thank you to everyone supporting us on Patreon — you truly help make this sailboat life possible. How did two people in their 20s afford to buy a sailboat and sail around the world? In this episode of Stella Overboard, we finally sit down and share the full story of how we went from living in a beat-up van in Australia to buying a 39ft sailboat and sailing across Southeast Asia full-time. A few years ago we had almost no money, no house, no savings, and honestly no idea what our future looked like. After meeting in Byron Bay, Australia, we spent months living out of our van, traveling the coast, surfing, fishing, and trying to figure out how we could create a completely different life for ourselves. That’s when we made the decision to work FIFO mining jobs in remote Western Australia. FIFO (Fly-In Fly-Out) work meant living for weeks at a time in isolated mining camps deep in the Australian outback, working exhausting 12-hour shifts in extreme heat, dirt, iron ore dust, and nonstop routines. It was physically and mentally draining, but it gave us one opportunity we never thought we’d have — the ability to save serious money quickly. For nearly two years we sacrificed comfort, freedom, time together, and pretty much everything normal people in their 20s were doing… all with one goal: Buy a sailboat and escape the traditional path. While many people around us were buying houses, financing cars, and settling into city life, we took a completely different route and invested everything into a life of adventure, freedom, travel, sailing, surfing, and living off-grid on the ocean. In this video we talk honestly about: ⚓ How we saved enough money to buy our sailboat Stella ⚓ What FIFO mining jobs in Australia are REALLY like ⚓ How much sailboats actually cost to own and maintain ⚓ The truth about living aboard full-time ⚓ How we make money while sailing around the world ⚓ YouTube income, sponsorships, and online work ⚓ The hardest parts of sailboat life nobody talks about ⚓ Why sailing can be both cheaper AND more expensive than normal life ⚓ Boat maintenance, haul-outs, diesel, repairs, insurance & hidden costs ⚓ Why we chose Indonesia and Southeast Asia for cruising ⚓ How surfing, freedom, and adventure changed our lives forever This lifestyle didn’t come from family money, trust funds, or luck. It came from years of hard work, sacrifice, risk-taking, and believing that life could be different if we were willing to work for it. Now we’re sailing through remote Indonesia, surfing empty waves, exploring untouched islands, living off solar power, fishing for food, and documenting every part of this journey here on YouTube. Some days are incredible. Some days are exhausting. But every single day feels like we’re actually living. If you’ve ever dreamed of buying a sailboat, quitting normal life, traveling the world, living off-grid, van life, sailing the Pacific, or creating freedom for yourself — we hope this video inspires you to go after it. Thanks for being here and supporting this crazy adventure ❤️ ⛵ Subscribe and follow along as we continue sailing through Indonesia and beyond with our sailboat Stella. #Sailing #SailboatLife #BoatLife #Liveaboard #VanLife #Indonesia #FIFO #SailingAroundTheWorld #AdventureCouple #TravelCouple #OffGridLiving #SailingChannel #SailingVlog #SailingAdventure #LifeAtSea #SailingIndonesia #CoupleGoals #TravelVlog #Surfing #Catamaran #YachtLife #StellaOverboard 00:00 Welcome to Stella Overboard 00:38 How We Bought a Sailboat in Our 20s 02:12 Living Van Life Before the Boat 03:40 What FIFO Mining Jobs Are Like 05:55 Life Inside the Australian Mines 08:02 The Reality of Saving for a Sailboat 10:18 How We Make Money Sailing Full-Time 12:25 The REAL Cost of Sailboat Life 14:35 Expensive Boat Repairs & Maintenance 16:10 Why Sailing Asia Is So Much Cheaper 17:45 Can You Sail on a Budget? 19:05 coming up next week 💙 A huge thank you to everyone supporting us on Patreon — you truly help make this sailboat life possible. ⛵️ From Beginners to Bluewater… Our First Year Living on a Sailboat One year ago today… we bought Stella. And honestly? We had almost no idea what we were doing. Camille had never properly sailed before. We moved aboard full-time in Langkawi, Malaysia… and learned everything the hard way. Over the last 365 days we’ve dealt with: ⚓️ dragging anchor in storms 🌊 squalls at sea 🔧 engine failures 🪢 fishing nets around the propeller 🚽 exploding toilets ⛵️ climbing the mast offshore 🛂 crossing borders into new countries 🐈 and even adopting a little sea kitten along the way But somewhere between all the chaos, breakdowns, sunsets, and surf missions… this lifestyle completely changed our lives. From Malaysia → Thailand → back through Langkawi for a full haul out → and now Indonesia… this is the story of our first year living aboard Stella. And honestly… it feels like this is only the beginning. ❤️ Thank you for following along and supporting this crazy dream. ⸻ 🌊 FOLLOW OUR JOURNEY: Instagram: @stella.overboard TikTok: @stella.overboard Facebook: Stella Overboard ⸻ ⏱️ TIMESTAMPS 00:00 Cheers to One Year on Stella 01:12 Buying a Sailboat With No Experience 02:45 Our Toilet Exploded on Our First Sail 04:10 Gearbox Failure & Learning the Hard Way 06:02 Dragging Anchor in Storms 07:20 Fishing Net Around the Propeller 09:05 Climbing the Mast Offshore 10:42 Learning Confidence at Sea 12:30 From Van Life to Boat Life 14:12 Building Stella Into an Off-Grid Home 16:10 Arriving in Remote Indonesia 18:40 Learning to Trust Stella 20:15 The Biggest Lessons We’ve Learned 23:18 Handling Emergencies as a Team 26:30 Sailing Into Anchorages Without an Engine 29:05 Why Sailing Changed Our Lives Forever 31:40 One Year Later… ⸻ #sailing #liveaboard #boatlife #sailinglife #sailboatlife #bluewatersailing #offgridliving #travelcouple #surfing #indonesia #adventure #oceanlife 💙 A huge thank you to everyone supporting us on Patreon — you truly help make this sailboat life possible. We didn’t even know this wave existed… After spotting something from the drone, we made the call to go for it , even if it meant leaving Stella anchored in a shallow coral lagoon with zero room for error. While one of us stayed back to watch the boat, the other paddled out to a wave we’d never seen before… in a place where no one else was around for miles. But getting there wasn’t easy. We had to land the dinghy on the opposite side of the island, ask permission from a local family, and hike through the jungle — hoping it would all be worth it. And somehow… it was. Perfect, empty waves breaking over shallow reef — the kind of surf you dream about… but rarely find. Out here, it’s always a balance of risk and reward. And this time… it paid off. After the surf, we head into a local village in search of food, meet some incredible people, and end the day back on Stella — where real life kicks back in (yes… laundry included). We always try to live as lightly as possible out here, using eco-friendly products that are safe for the ocean and reef we depend on. This is life on a sailboat in remote Indonesia — raw, unpredictable, and always an adventure. 💙 A huge thank you to everyone supporting us on Patreon — you truly help make this sailboat life possible. What started as one of the most beautiful crossings we’ve ever had quickly turned into one of the most intense experiences of our lives. We set off on what we thought would be a calm and easy night sail. The weather was perfect… light winds, clear skies, and a full moon rising over the ocean. Everything looked exactly how you’d want it before a night crossing. We checked all the weather apps, reviewed our route, and prepared for what we thought would be a peaceful sail to our next destination. But sometimes… the ocean has other plans. Just hours into the night, everything changed. What we didn’t know was that we were sailing straight into an unforecasted storm. The wind picked up fast. The sky went completely dark. Lightning started surrounding us, and before we knew it, we were in the middle of one of the longest and most exhausting nights we’ve ever experienced at sea. For nearly 48 hours, we battled relentless rain, strong winds, and powerful waves. Stella was being thrown around, slamming into wave after wave, while we tried to manage the sails, stay on course, and keep each other going with almost no sleep. We took turns on watch, constantly adjusting, reefing, and reacting to whatever the ocean threw at us next. Every hour felt longer than the last, and all we could do was wait for daylight… hoping things would calm down. But when the sun finally came up, the storm wasn’t over. It just kept going. Cold, exhausted, and completely soaked, we pushed through the second night, relying on our instruments, our training, and each other to get through it safely. And finally… after what felt like forever… we made it. Dropping anchor after a storm like that doesn’t feel real. The water goes calm, the rain stops, and suddenly everything is quiet again. It’s hard to even process what you’ve just been through. But moments like this are why we do it. Because on the other side of the hardest days… are places that make it all worth it. If you’ve ever wondered what it’s really like living on a sailboat, this is it. Not just the calm, beautiful moments… but the unpredictable, challenging ones too. And this one… we’ll never forget. 💙 A huge thank you to everyone supporting us on Patreon — you truly help make this sailboat life possible. Living on a sailboat in Indonesia… this is what a normal day looks like for us. ⚓️ We wake up to the sound of the ocean, surrounded by remote islands with no one else in sight. No schedule, no set plan , just the wind, the waves, and whatever the day decides to bring. This morning starts like most… slow and quiet. Coffee on deck, checking the weather, and getting ready to move. We pull up anchor, tidy up the boat, and set sail toward the next island — not fully knowing what we’ll find, but trusting the journey. Sailing through Indonesia has been nothing short of unreal. Thousands of islands, crystal clear water, and the kind of freedom we used to only dream about. But life out here isn’t just about the views… it’s about learning as we go, adapting to the ocean, and figuring things out every single day. As we sail, we drop a line in the water… not expecting much… until suddenly — we hook a fish. And just like that, dinner is sorted. Moments like this never get old. There’s something so rewarding about catching your own food out here in the middle of nowhere. After dropping sails and finding a calm place to anchor, the day is far from over. Boards out, dinghy in the water… it’s time to go surf. Some days we paddle straight from the boat, other days we explore… but today, we scored. Warm water, empty waves, and that feeling you can’t really put into words. Back on board, it’s time to prep the fish. Simple, fresh, straight from the ocean to the table. We head over to a nearby catamaran, fire up the BBQ, and end the day the best way we know how, good food, salt in our hair, and the sun setting over the ocean. It’s crazy to think that less than a year ago, we were dreaming about this life… and now this is our everyday. Living on a sailboat in our 20s isn’t always easy — there are challenges, long passages, things breaking, and moments of doubt… but days like this make it all worth it. This is why we chose this life. And we’re only just getting started. 📍 Currently sailing Indonesia ⛵️ Boat: Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 39i 🌊 Living full-time at sea 00:00 INTRO 🌊 00:59 Picking Up Anchor (Getting Ready to Sail) ⚓️ 06:45 Sailing Through Indonesia ⛵️ 17:00 We Caught a Fish!! 🎣 18:00 Dropping Sails & Anchoring 19:45 Let’s Go Surfing 🌊 22:19 Cutting Up the Fish 23:55 BBQ on a Catamaran 🔥 24:44 Coming Up Next… 👀 💙 A huge thank you to everyone supporting us on Patreon — you truly help make this sailboat life possible. 🌊 Sailing Indonesia 🇮🇩 | Episode 1 – Entering Indonesia by Sailboat We finally did it… we made it to Indonesia. 🇮🇩 After days at sea, crossing into a completely new country, we had no idea what to expect. Entering Indonesia by sailboat isn’t as simple as dropping anchor — the check-in process is real, detailed, and something every cruiser talks about… but experiencing it for ourselves was something else entirely. From health checks and paperwork, to welcoming (and very thorough) officials stepping aboard Stella, this was our official introduction to Indonesia — and it’s safe to say, it left an impression. But once we cleared in… everything changed. We found ourselves exploring the island of Sabang by motorbike, weaving through jungle roads, quiet beaches, and getting our first taste of life here. This is the kind of place that feels untouched — raw, beautiful, and full of adventure. Back on the boat, it was time to settle into this new chapter. We jumped in the water, went for a dive, searched for fish (no luck this time 😅), and started preparing for what we came here for… Surf. This is something we’ve dreamed about for a long time — sailing through Indonesia, chasing waves, and exploring some of the most remote islands in the world. And this is just the beginning. In the next episode, we start sailing down the coast in search of our first proper waves in Indonesia… and trust us, things are about to get even better. Thanks so much for being here and supporting our journey — it honestly means the world to us. ❤️ ⛵ ABOUT US We’re Camille & Jesse, a couple who left behind the “normal” path to live full-time on our 39ft sailboat Stella. After working in the Australian mines, we saved everything we could to buy this boat — and taught ourselves how to sail along the way. Now, we’re exploring Southeast Asia one island at a time. 🌴 CURRENT LOCATION: Indonesia ⛵ BOAT: Jeanneau 39i (2007) 📍 FOLLOW OUR JOURNEY: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/stella.overboard TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@stella.overboard 💛 SUPPORT THE CHANNEL: 💙 A huge thank you to everyone supporting us on Patreon — you truly help make this sailboat life possible. We’re officially crossing into Indonesia… and it’s our very first time doing it. After months of preparing our sailboat Stella, we left Malaysia and set off on a 3 day crossing into Indonesia — sailing straight through the Malacca Strait, one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world. This was our first time: – sailing overnight – doing watch shifts alone in the dark – navigating around massive container ships – and crossing into a new country by sea With over 90,000 vessels passing through this strait every year, this crossing was nothing like we expected. From glassy sunsets to pitch-black night sailing… to unexpected storms, engine hiccups, and fishing boats with no AIS — things got intense fast. But after 3 days at sea… we finally saw land. 🇮🇩 Welcome to Indonesia. Next episode, we officially check into the country — with customs, immigration, quarantine, and the harbor master all coming onboard 😅 — before starting our search for remote waves and hidden islands. 🎥 If you’re new here: We’re Camille & Jesse — a young couple who worked in the Australian mines to buy a 39ft sailboat… and now we’re sailing the world. 👍 Subscribe to follow the journey 🌊 Episode 1 of our Indonesia series. 💙 A huge thank you to everyone supporting us on Patreon — you truly help make this sailboat life possible. #AD This video is in collaboration with International Yacht Paint by AkzoNobel. What we thought would be a quick haul-out for maintenance quickly turned into something much bigger. From sanding the hull and dropping the rudder to installing a new cutless bearing and repainting the bottom, this boatyard visit turned into a full project. In this episode we tackle one of the most important jobs on any sailboat — antifouling the hull. Before we head off to remote Indonesia, we wanted to make sure Stella is fully prepared for warm tropical waters where marine growth builds quickly. To protect the hull we’re applying Micron 99 antifoul paint from International Yacht Paint, along with Primocon primer, as part of their full yacht coatings system designed to provide long-lasting protection below the waterline. Join us as we prep the hull, apply the primer, and roll on the antifoul to get Stella ready to splash and begin our next sailing adventure. After weeks on the hard stand, the moment of truth has finally arrived. In the last episode we hauled Stella out of the water and immediately ran into one problem after another, removing the propeller, dropping the rudder, pulling the shaft, and even cutting out the cutless bearing twice. Now the work continues. In this episode Jesse returns from Australia with a new cutless bearing, boat parts, and a few surfboards, and we get back to work trying to put Stella back together. From installing the new cutless bearing and prop shaft, to painting the hull with Primocon primer and Micron 99 antifoul, this week has been all about rebuilding Stella piece by piece. With the help of our amazing friends, neighbors on the hard stand, the Rebak Marina team, and Yacht Supplies Malaysia, we finally begin to see real progress. But the real test comes when Stella goes back into the water. Will everything be sealed properly? Will the thru-hulls leak? Will the drip seal hold? Boat life isn’t always sunsets and sailing , sometimes it’s weeks of hard work in the boatyard just to get back out to sea. But once Stella splashes again, the next adventure begins. Now it’s time to provision the boat, organize the interior, and prepare for our next sailing journey… Indonesia. 💙 A huge thank you to everyone supporting us on Patreon — you truly help make this sailboat life possible. What we thought would be a simple one-week haul out quickly turned into something much bigger… In this episode of Stella Overboard, we haul our sailboat Stella out of the water at Rebak Marina in Langkawi, Malaysia to begin some major maintenance and upgrades before continuing our sailing adventure across Southeast Asia. But almost immediately, things start going wrong. Within the first hour on the hard stand, we discover that removing a propeller is not nearly as simple as it sounds. After hours of hammering, heating, and pulling, we finally get it off — only to realize that we also need to remove the rudder before we can slide the prop shaft out. With the help of the amazing Rebak Marina team, our boatyard neighbors, and friends at Yacht Supplies Malaysia, we lift Stella back into the travel lift to drop the rudder — a job that turns out to be much bigger than expected. And just when we think we’re making progress… another problem appears. After removing our old cutless bearing and spending hours installing a brand new one, we discover the shaft won’t fit back through it, forcing us to cut the brand-new bearing back out again. Now we’re stuck without the part we need — and the only solution might be flying to Australia to pick up a custom one. Boat life isn’t always tropical anchorages and sailing into sunsets… sometimes it’s boatyard chaos, unexpected repairs, and learning everything the hard way. But every step brings us closer to getting Stella back in the water and ready for our next big adventure. ⚓ In this episode: Hauling Stella out of the water Travel lift and hard stand process Removing the propeller and prop shaft Dropping the rudder Cutless bearing replacement Boatyard life in Langkawi DIY sailboat maintenance ⛵ About Us We’re Camille and Jesse, a young couple who worked in the Australian mines to save enough money to buy a sailboat and chase a life of adventure at sea. Now we live aboard our Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 39i sailing through Southeast Asia, sharing the highs, lows, and everything in between. From sailing remote islands and chasing surf to fixing whatever breaks next, this is life aboard Stella Overboard. 💙 A huge thank you to everyone supporting us on Patreon — you truly help make this sailboat life possible. As we have prepared for this voyage, it feels like our whole life. We are finally on the way to Indonesia with a freshly painted boat and uncountable upgrades and provisions. We are now facing 50 hours at sea and our first night sale come along and see how it’s going.
Life on a sailboat means learning how to fix things yourself… sometimes the hard way. In this episode of Stella Overboard, we haul our 39-foot sailboat Stella out of the water in Langkawi, Malaysia and take on one of the most important upgrades a boat owner can do — replacing every thru hull fitting and seacock on the boat. Old thru hulls can be a major safety risk offshore, so while Stella is on the hard stand we decided it was time to upgrade the entire system. With the help of Marine Supplies Asia and TruDesign, Jesse and I tackle the job ourselves — removing old fittings, installing brand new TruDesign composite thru hulls and seacocks, and learning a lot along the way. No boatyard crew. No professionals. Just two sailors figuring it out as we go. This refit is all part of preparing Stella for our next big adventure sailing through Indonesia in search of remote islands and surf breaks. If you're curious about sailboat maintenance, thru hull installations, or what life in a boatyard is really like — this episode is for you. ⚓ Boat: Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 39i 📍 Filmed in Langkawi, Malaysia Big thanks to: Marine Supplies Asia TruDesign 💙 A huge thank you to everyone supporting us on Patreon — you truly help make this sailboat life possible. What is life really like on a sailboat in Thailand? For the past two months, we’ve been exploring remote islands, sailing in steady 20–25 knots, snorkeling coral reefs, visiting small fishing villages, and living full-time aboard our 39-foot sailboat, Stella — with Jesse’s whole family (and our kitten Shelly 🐾) onboard. In this episode, we share a real look at everyday life on the water: - Sailing between tropical islands -Picking up mooring balls & anchoring in turquoise bays -Snorkeling and checking the boat underwater - Growing food onboard - Cooking meals together - Sunset haircuts on deck - Quiet anchorages with no wind This is the simple, beautiful rhythm of sailboat life in Southeast Asia. Thailand has given us some of our favorite memories yet , warm water, kind people, and anchorages we’ll never forget. Next, we sail back to Malaysia to prepare Stella for our next adventure. 💙 A huge thank you to everyone supporting us on Patreon — you truly help make this sailboat life possible. A Day in Our Life Living on a Sailboat in Our 20s | Thailand Welcome back aboard Stella Overboard. Today we’re sailing from the north of Thailand back down south toward Krabi as we begin our journey toward Malaysia for our upcoming haul out. It’s another beautiful day in paradise , light winds to start, dancing in the cockpit, pulling up anchor, and setting off with 22 nautical miles ahead of us. Since the wind takes a little while to fill in, we give you a full house tour of our 39ft Jeanneau Sun Odyssey , our floating home. Three berths, one head, a tiny galley, and somehow enough space for four people onboard. Living on a sailboat in your 20s isn’t always glamorous, but it’s ours, and we love it. Eventually the wind picks up and we get both our head sail and main sail out, cruising at up to 13 knots on a tight reach. There’s nothing better than carving through the islands of Thailand with perfect conditions. But sailboat life always comes with the unexpected. As we anchor for the night, we notice a large group of officials boarding boats around us. Soon enough, the water police approach Stella to check our documentation. Luckily, we always make sure to properly check in and out and keep our paperwork ready — because if you don’t, fines can be serious. Some boats nearby were fined 5,000 baht for not having the correct clearance. Thankfully, everything checks out and we’re free to enjoy the anchorage. Clear water, island views, swimming off the boat, putting the outboard on the tender, and heading ashore for food and supplies — this is what a real day of sailboat life looks like. As Jesse takes his parents to the island for snacks and water, we begin preparing for the next four days of sailing down the coast toward Malaysia. Our haul out is coming soon, and we’re excited… and a little nervous. Big projects ahead. Thanks for being here and supporting our journey. See you next week for our final days sailing Thailand before haul out ⚓️ 💙 A huge thank you to everyone supporting us on Patreon — you truly help make this sailboat life possible.
