In this episode, we install the exterior front door, get the house fully dried in, test paint colors for faux cedar siding, foam around the door frame, install drywall nailers around HVAC, plumbing, and gas lines, and turn leftover sheathing into attic flooring for storage. The house still isn’t finished — but with the roof, windows, and door finally in, it’s protected from the weather. It’s not a home yet, but it’s finally starting to feel like a shelter. Take your personal data back with Incogni! Use code ATTICUS at the link below and get 60% off an annual plan: https://incogni.com/atticus This week on the build of our mountain home outside Bryson City, North Carolina, we’re finally insulating our house — and I got to suit up and follow the spray foam crew through the entire process. I’ve been really curious about spray foam insulation because it’s not just insulation. It also air seals the house, fills every little gap between the framing and sheathing, and turns the roof/attic area into part of the conditioned space. But it also comes with some serious trade-offs: cost, installation quality, roof leak concerns, and the need for intentional ventilation once the house becomes this airtight. In this episode, we watch the crew prep the house, protect the windows and floors, mix the spray foam chemicals at the gun, spray the wall cavities and roof deck, trim the foam flush, and then install fiberglass batt insulation in the interior walls for sound control. Then I walk through why I chose spray foam for this build, what problems I think it solves, and what concerns I still have about it. This is a huge step in our first build. The house is finally close to being dried in, but before the insulation crew arrives, we have to finish every hidden detail inside the exterior walls — range hood ducting, wood stove chimney framing, electrical and CAT6 stub-outs, hose bib blocking, HVAC condensate drains, porch roof wiring, drywall nailers, and a few mistakes along the way. We thought siding would be straightforward… but this day turned into one problem after another. Between running out of materials, fixing missed waterproofing details, working off pump jacks for the first time, and dealing with tricky installs around windows, HVAC line sets, and trim—this was one of those days where nothing is hard individually… but everything adds up. We’re continuing siding on our small home in the mountains of North Carolina, trying to keep up with a professional crew while learning in real time. From installing window trim and soffits, to laying out a frieze board, snapping lines, and dialing in board-and-batten alignment—this is what the process actually looks like when you're figuring it out as you go. Not every day is huge progress… but every day matters if we want to finish this house. Let’s get to work. Huge thanks to the crew who helped make this happen — links to everyone involved below. We’re getting close to the end of the rough-in phase on our mountain home build, but before we can move on to insulation and drywall, we have to pass framing inspection — and that means a lot more than just framing. In this episode, I’m juggling a framing punch list, last-minute material ordering, trim paint, gas line planning, HVAC rough-in details, and porch roof design — all while trying not to slow down the siding crew. We work through inspector notes, install truss screws, frame the attic ladder opening, pressure test the gas line, solve an HVAC condensate drain conflict, plan dryer vent and bath fan duct runs, tighten anchor bolts, add framing straps, and finish a final interior wall. This is a real look at construction project management on a small house build: coordinating subcontractors, solving rough-in conflicts, handling framing inspection prep, and getting HVAC, gas, and framing approved so the build can keep moving. This week marks a major milestone for our mountain home: we are finally getting the structure dried in. We’re diving deep into two critical systems that transform a construction site into a functional home—high-performance windows and a smart, budget-friendly HVAC solution. The "Ultimate" Window Solution We’re installing European-style tilt-and-turn windows that are a game-changer for the American market. These aren't standard vinyl frames; they feature internal steel reinforcements for incredible dimensional stability. Most importantly for a high-efficiency build, the multi-point locking system squeezes the sash against triple gaskets to create a virtually airtight seal. Smart HVAC: Performance vs. Price For heating and cooling, we opted for a 3-zone mini-split system. While central air is the standard, this installation took only 1.5 hours compared to an estimated 3-day ductwork installation. We’re also sharing how we’re keeping the bathrooms warm without the massive expense of radiant floor heating. Windows Discount!!! Building a house on a mountain comes with a specific set of problems—mostly involving gravity. In this episode, we tackle the most difficult wall of the build so far. With a steep bank and almost zero clearance for scaffolding, getting the LP SmartSide up was a logistical puzzle that really showed me the value of working with a professional crew. While the exterior is finally getting its "skin," we’re also heading inside to finish up the interior wall framing. Moving from my experience building a DIY shed to framing an actual home has been a massive reality check. I’m learning that in the world of professional construction, "perfect" is often secondary to "practical," and I’m sharing every revelation I pick up from the pros along the way. I’ve framed walls before, but they were usually for small sheds where "close enough" was good enough. This is different. This is my actual home in Bryson City, North Carolina, and every mistake I make now is a mistake I’ll have to live with (literally). In the first half of today’s episode, my dad and I take on the challenge of framing our first interior wall solo. The goal? Don't repeat the mistakes of the past. No twisted studs, no "good enough" corners—just pure, square framing. Then, the real pros arrive. I’ve got my friends from Ellis Earthworksand Custom Homes come to help me finish the rest of the interior walls. This week we installed the roof trusses on our mountain home — completely by hand, no crane, no machine. I got to be right in the middle of it, climbing through the trusses as they went up and tying everything together. It was equal parts sketchy and exhilarating. Balancing, moving, and working in some pretty precarious positions gave me a whole new respect for how much coordination and focus this kind of framing takes. I learned a ton on this one. We wrapped the first floor, set the floor trusses, and suddenly most of the work was happening without solid ground under our feet. I showed up thinking I had a decent handle on how this phase of the build would go. By the end of the day, I realized how much I didn’t know—and how fast a good crew can move when they know exactly what they’re doing. This episode is mostly me trying to keep up, asking a lot of questions, and learning more in one day than I ever have about how a building actually comes together. The guys were patient, funny, and incredibly skilled, and watching the load-bearing walls of the first floor go up this fast made the project feel real in a way it hadn’t yet. This week we built the first wall of our home — but it’s going in right up against a steep bank, and that adds a layer of risk we can’t ignore. The site isn’t ideal but this structure is going to do a lot for us over the next few years, and that forced us into a compromise we’ve thought long and hard about. Working with a foundation crew, I learned how to lay block and we committed to a decision that becomes permanent the moment concrete goes in. Once this wall is filled, there’s no undo — so we need to get this right. Huge thanks to the crews who helped make this happen — links to everyone involved below. This week we finally start construction on our first home on the property. We prep the site, lock in the exact location of the structure, rough in the plumbing, and pour the foundation for the place our family will actually live while we continue building out the rest of the property. Once concrete is poured, there’s no moving walls — this is the first permanent step, and it carries a lot of weight for us. This episode follows a week where we had to slow down, face an earlier decision, and reckon with what learning on the fly really looks like when you’re doing this together. It also comes at a turning point. With our workshop build about to begin — the biggest and most important project we’ve taken on so far — this week felt like a final checkpoint before everything gets more serious. Less progress, more reflection, and a clear reminder that how we build going forward really matters. After our generator was stolen, it became clear that being remote doesn’t automatically make you safe. It just means help is a long way away if something goes wrong. So in this episode, I’m finally taking security seriously and putting systems in place to stop a future intruder before they ever get close. This isn’t about paranoia or turning our land into a fortress. It’s about being realistic, learning from a hard lesson, and protecting the tools and equipment that let us build this homestead and document the process. I walk through my security strategy in order of priority — explaining why each step matters and showing exactly what I’m installing as I go. If you live on a rural property, store tools on site, or are building far from town, this is the side of homesteading people don’t talk about enough. New to the channel?
