Monday fun day in the sun! It's time for a little free R&R!
Jordan takes Atticus out on his own for a quick sunset cruise in Key West.
As we have been refitting Atticus we have in our free time sailing O'Day 22s from the Key West Sailing Club to train Desiree on how to sail. After many days on the water this is Desiree's first time captaining and she kills it!
Meet Jordan's brother and nephews, our Project Atticus support team in Santa Cruz, California:) They made T-Shirts to spread the love out here!
We're finally out of the boatyard! Not too far of a trip to the Marina around the corner, but the change in lifestyle is drastic! Showers, gym, captain's lounge, wifi! Ooooh yeah! Now all we have to do is get that mast back up!
After 1 year and 4 months in the boatyard, 4 trips to the urgent care center, roughly 300 trips to west marine, a couple emotional breakdowns, and countless mistakes, we're finally wrapping up our messy projects and moving to a marina where we can finish our refit! Next stage: Desiree will be focusing on sewing projects and Jordan will be focusing on the rig. We'll both be working part time as Captain and First Mate until November to continue to finance the refit. We'll also start to get in as many shake down cruises as possible once we get that rig up!
How do we sponsor our refit and future circumnavigation plans in our twenties? One great source of income has been working on superyachts. Desiree drops us a line from the Caribbean where she has been island hopping on a charter boat for the last two weeks!
Applying our final coat of Awl Grip Topcoat to the Bulwarks. This is our last coat of gloss before we can get started with the Non-Skid.
We are back everybody! After a short hiatus (Jordan's Ankle has been healing and Desiree has been in the Caribbean working as a freelance stewardess on a 154ft yacht previously called Ohana) we are back to work with full steam ahead! On the To Do List this week is painting the deck lockers and the bulwarks! http://www.Facebook.com/TheProjectAtticus http://www.projectatticus.com
Desiree sprays the final coat of primer (Alwgrip 545 Epoxy Primer) and does an excellent job! Check out the spray master in action!
In the spirit of egalitarianism Desiree will be spraying the last coat of primer tomorrow. She's a little nervous...
Desiree is back in town after doing some freelance stewardess work in the Bahamas. The last time she saw the boat, it was multi-colored from sanding through 50 years of deck paint! Now Atticus is primed with it's first coat, and the next step is filling pinholes and cracks! http://www.Projectatticus.com https://www.facebook.com/TheProjectAtticus
Living on a sailboat in a boatyard with a broken leg is less than ideal, but there are a few perks, most notably the electric shopping cart at the grocery store! Check out this quick update on the state of the refit! http://www.Projectatticus.com https://www.facebook.com/TheProjectAtticus
Jordan sprays the Awlgrip 545 primer over the decks. Sadly the compressor could hardly keep up and made the process go very SLOW!
Jordan's father is here to help with some wood projects, primarily the new companionway sliding hatch and accompanying turtle hatch.
Fiberglass decks can delaminate from their core over time even if the core is dry. Here is how to fix that problem.
When refitting an old boat the decks may need a lot of fairing to bring them back to looking like new after years of abuse. After a couple deck repairs, much fairing is needed. Check out just how flat fairing can get!
There is a LOT of sanding to do before we can apply the topcoat over the primer. As I sand away my father is finishing up our new companionway hatch and turtle hatch!
Desiree is heading off to work in the Bahamas for a month! Time to make that money.
