Start speaking a new language in 3 weeks with Babbel 🎉. Get up to 55% OFF ➡️ Here: https://bit.ly/SailingProjectAtticusJan As we build our own home in the mountains, mistakes don’t always show up right away — sometimes they surface when you’re forced to lock things in. This episode follows a week where we had to slow down, face an earlier decision, and reckon with what learning on the fly really looks like when you’re doing this together. It also comes at a turning point. With our workshop build about to begin — the biggest and most important project we’ve taken on so far — this week felt like a final checkpoint before everything gets more serious. Less progress, more reflection, and a clear reminder that how we build going forward really matters. Take your personal data back with Incogni! Use code ATTICUS at the link below and get 60% off an annual plan: https://incogni.com/atticus Living this far out in the mountains is incredible — but it also means we’re on our own when it comes to protecting our property. After our generator was stolen, it became clear that being remote doesn’t automatically make you safe. It just means help is a long way away if something goes wrong. So in this episode, I’m finally taking security seriously and putting systems in place to stop a future intruder before they ever get close. This isn’t about paranoia or turning our land into a fortress. It’s about being realistic, learning from a hard lesson, and protecting the tools and equipment that let us build this homestead and document the process. I walk through my security strategy in order of priority — explaining why each step matters and showing exactly what I’m installing as I go. If you live on a rural property, store tools on site, or are building far from town, this is the side of homesteading people don’t talk about enough. New to the channel? Also on Amazon: https://noviumdesign.shop/8aUkNX Most of the projects out here start the same way. I do the research, watch the videos, and think I understand what I’m about to do… and then I actually start — and realize I’m still pretty clueless. This week, I’m finishing the LP SmartSide siding on the shed, and it’s a perfect example of that process. Nothing felt natural at first. Every step was slow, awkward, and inefficient. But as the days went on, repetition started to matter, things began to click, and by the end I finally felt comfortable with the work. That learning curve — going from uncertainty to confidence through doing — is something I’ve come to really appreciate about building this place. Along the way, we also took time to step away from the work: hiking a trail right next to our property with views into the Smoky Mountains, wandering through a festive downtown Bryson City, and visiting a local farm (including some very cool Scottish Highland cows). Those moments are part of the rhythm of this season for us — building, learning, and raising a family here in the mountains. This episode isn’t about perfection or shortcuts. It’s about showing up, sticking with it, and getting a little better — one project at a time. New to the channel? AG1 has their best offer ever - subscribe through our link: https://drinkag1.com/atticus and you’ll unlock 7 free gifts worth $126! Winter came out of nowhere this week, and it changed everything. I was planning to finish insulating the shed and finally start getting the siding installed… but instead we woke up to the first big snow of the season, and my dad ended up in the hospital overnight with arm pain that could’ve been something serious. So in this episode, we’re trying to make progress wherever we can. I wrap up the roof insulation, we start installing the trim and siding for the very first time, and I quickly realize just how steep the learning curve is. We only manage to finish one wall, but it felt like a win after the week we had. We also squeeze in a little family time, take the girls fishing, cook up some fresh trout, and say goodbye to my parents as they head home. Not the week we expected… but we kept moving forward. This week winter suddenly became very real for us. I think everyone should have Strapinno ratchet straps in their vehicle! To get your hands on this amazing product click here: https://amz.cx/3Vor And check out Strapinno's website here: https://strapinno.com/ A cold spell is moving in fast, and even though we just spent our first week living on the property, it’s clear we’re not ready for freezing temperatures. So we shifted gears and focused on everything that has to be protected before the cold hit. My shed — which is both our workshop and my office — has been brutally cold in the mornings, so my dad and I installed the soffits and insulated the roof to finally make it usable. We also insulated the well and wrapped the exposed water line and filter leading into the trailer so nothing freezes when temperatures drop. And before the ground hardened, we spread the last bit of seed on areas of the land we hadn’t finished yet. My parents arrived at the start of the week, which meant a ton of help on these projects… and a lot more fun. They joined us for something we’d been looking forward to for weeks: taking Isabella on the Polar Express here in Bryson City. She was thrilled right up until Santa walked in — then she absolutely lost it. One of the funniest family memories we’ve had in a long time. New to the channel? This week we finally move onto our mountain property and start settling into life on the ridge. After spending months preparing the land — clearing trees, grading, running utilities, and shaping a flat spot — it feels good to wake up here and actually live on the place we’ve been working on for so long. We get the trailer set up, organize the odds and ends from the campground, set up the girls’ play tent, and begin figuring out our daily rhythm up here. I also take on one important project before winter: tilling and seeding the main flat so we can get grass established and avoid a muddy mess once the cold, wet weather hits. Isabella helped me spread the straw, which made the whole job feel a lot more meaningful. There’s also a fun break from the work as Desiree finishes the girls’ Halloween costumes, and we all head into town as our little “biker gang.” Life on the mountain is starting to take shape, and we’re excited to share what living here actually looks like as we continue building our homestead. In this episode, Jordan tackles the last of the electrical work that will bring power to our mountain property — wiring sub-panels, connecting the meter base, and fixing a few painful mistakes along the way. This is the final piece of a three-part series documenting our push to get the property ready so our family can finally move up the mountain and start living here full-time. Last week we broke ground — literally — starting the massive job of trenching for power and water. Now, in this episode, we’re finishing that work, backfilling, and laying down gravel for the first time. It’s a huge step forward — the property suddenly feels more livable and more real than ever before. But with that progress comes some growing pains. I’ve been pushing hard to get everything ready on my own, and I’m starting to realize I might need to bring in help if we’re going to keep the momentum going. This episode is the middle chapter in our three-part storyline about getting power, water, and septic ready so our family can finally move up the mountain and call this place home. Next week, we’ll wrap up the electrical and well hookups — the final step before we can finally live on the land full-time. New to the channel? This week, we had to put the build on hold. Our daughter was born with a rare medical condition, and recently her neurosurgeon asked us to travel to Boston Children’s Hospital for a diagnostic angiogram. It’s a serious test that comes with real risks — and the results could have a major impact on her future. We filmed the experience as honestly as we could because this journey — the highs, the lows, and the unexpected detours — is all part of our life as we try to build a home for our family here in the mountains. Before leaving for Boston, we managed to squeeze in one small but important project on the property. Then we packed up and made the trip north for one of the hardest weeks of our lives. Thank you to everyone who’s been following our story and supporting us through all of this. New to the channel? MyHeritage is currently running a special promotion right now for our viewers. To get your DNA kit for just $29 use coupon code “Project” and go to https://bit.ly/ProjectAtticusDNA This week, I set out to tackle one of the most frustrating projects on our property — trying to seed and protect a steep hillside that is at risk of washing out. What I thought would take a day turned into a brutal, multi-day battle against gravity, exhaustion, and my own patience. And just when I thought things couldn’t get worse… we were robbed. After losing our generator — the one tool that keeps our entire off-grid build running — it felt like the world was kicking us while we were down. But we’re doing what we can: tightening security, putting up a gate, and pushing forward. New to the channel? Check out the listing: https://next.navicamls.net/253/ListingDisplay/?eListingId=6880192&eListingKey=JBI5COT5D0DD Before we found our dream property, we bought a small lot in the Deep Creek area, thinking it would be a stepping stone toward building our future home. But it didn’t take long to realize that it was too small for the kind of house we wanted, and holding on to it has turned into one of our biggest mistakes. Now we’ve decided it’s time to let go. But before we can sell, the property has become so overgrown it’s almost unrecognizable. So I spent several days with the chainsaw, battling brush and bugs, just to get it ready to list. Along the way, I share why mistakes like this are an unavoidable part of our journey — and maybe even the best way to learn. New to the channel? Armed with a chainsaw and a lot of determination, we cut through dense brush and small trees to transform the space into a shaded family hangout. By the end of the weekend, we had outdoor furniture set up, a hammock hanging, a sandbox for our daughter, and even a swing in the trees. How do you even put in a septic system on a slope this steep? This week we find out. Take your personal data back with Incogni! Use code ATTICUS at the link below and get 60% off an annual plan: https://incogni.com/atticus We hired a local crew to install the septic on our land in the Smoky Mountains of North Carolina, and watching them work an excavator on this terrain was seriously impressive. Steep slopes, soft ground, and rain in the forecast made this a tough install — but it’s the one project standing between us and finally moving our family onto this property. For months we’ve been living in a campground with our two little girls while we’ve slowly turned this raw land into our future homestead. Getting septic in the ground means we can finally get power, move our trailer here, and apply for our first building permit. It’s a huge milestone for us, and one we’ve been waiting on for a long time. As a bonus, we also visited the local sawmill run by the same crew — and got to watch them mill the biggest tree we cut down on our land into beautiful boards for a future dining table. Thanks for following along as we take one more big step toward calling this land home. Need to install a septic system or have general excavation needs near Bryson city, NC? To get power on our raw land, we had to completely change our plans — and build a workshop/house before the dream home. Instead of building the trailer shelter we had planned, we realized it made more sense to design a two-story, 20×30 workshop/house we could live in now and later use as our permanent shop, office, and guest space. It’s a huge pivot, but one that solves our immediate problems and sets up the homestead long term. In this episode, I pour concrete for the first time to set the posts for our meter base, work through the design of the workshop/house, and bring in my construction buddy Cody to see if it’s even possible to fit this structure on our small build site. This week, we’re drilling our well on our land in the Smoky Mountains of North Carolina. You can go to my sponsor https://aura.com/atticus to try 14 days for free. That’s enough time for Aura to start scrubbing your personal info off these data broker sites, without you lifting a finger. Drilling this Well will be a huge step toward finally moving our cramped 26-foot travel trailer onto the property where we'll have much more room to live as a family. But around here, finding water isn’t guaranteed. Many of our neighbors have had to drill hundreds of feet to hit a usable supply, and every extra foot adds big dollars to the final bill. With two kids under three and a tight budget, the pressure is on. We need this well to deliver enough water for our future home, but if we’re not lucky, the cost could skyrocket before we ever break ground. New to the channel? Use code ATTICUS at the link below and get 60% off an annual plan: https://incogni.com/atticus For weeks, we’ve been busy excavating our homesite here in the Smoky Mountains, along with a second pad for a future shelter structure. Use code ATTICUS at checkout.
