The head-to-head between 38 and the 380 ultimately never took place, all down to the Mistral that was coming through a little too hard, blowing at over 30 knots early on our test day we'd scheduled out of Bonifacio. So, our boat tester Brieuc Maisonneuve got to sail aboard the new Lagoon 38 in lively conditions, but the 380 remained alongside the dock. His initial reaction: "We set sail in 20 knots, gusting 30. I found the catamaran very stable despite the very short sea, and the helm was very smooth. On the downside, I wasn't so sure about the choice of a self-tacking jib: the sail is difficult to trim at points further off the wind and lacks power when sailing close to the wind, which can result in a slightly disappointing heading. As for the comfort on board, it is exceptional for the size of the boat, and the layout of the starboard hull is a real success." ? S'il y avait un multicoque à ne pas rater à l'International Multihull Show qui s'est déroulé du 23 au 29 avril dernier à La Grande-Motte, c'était bien le ModX 70, vainqueur du Multihull of the Year dans la catégorie Multiyacht. Ce nouveau catamaran, dont la construction a utilisé 38 % de résine époxy biosourcée, 40 % de mousse PET recyclée et de la fibre de lin et du liège, se distingue par ses modes de propulsion 100 % énergies renouvelables - comprenez qu'il n'y a pas de groupe(s) électrogènes(s) à bord. Par sa présence à La Grande-Motte, le révolutionnaire ModX a d'ailleurs d'ores et déjà réussi son pari technologique, puisqu'il est parvenu à faire un tour d'Espagne sans utiliser d'énergie fossile. Pour parvenir à ce tour de force sans mettre en péril la sécurité, les concepteurs se sont résolus à lancer un catamaran assez grand ; au départ, le projet tablait sur 50 pieds, puis 60? pour se caler à 70. Pourquoi cette envolée ? Parce que le ModX, pour gagner son pari, se devait d'être très performant sous voile - ou plus précisément sous aile -, de supporter un très puissant parc de batteries et enfin d'augmenter au maximum la surface potentielle des panneaux solaires. De fait, les longues et fines coques à étraves fortement inversées garantissent de belles vitesses moyennes - de l'ordre de 15 n?uds - capables de générer une hydrogénération très efficace. Lors du tour d'Espagne, le ModX 70 a même atteint 21 n?uds. Côté design, on note également un embryon de coque centrale qui permet de gagner un peu de surface de pont, d'intégrer les apparaux de mouillage et même une annexe de 3,40 m avec son moteur (électrique, bien sûr !). Sous la nacelle, cette troisième coque forme une aile de mouette en mesure d'améliorer le confort dans la mer formée. Le poids de ce premier ModX 70 est contenu à 30 tonnes, ce qui est une valeur plutôt satisfaisante, même si 4 tonnes pourraient bien être gagnées sur les prochaines unités. La grande taille du catamaran permet évidemment d'embarquer plus facilement un important parc batteries - ici 230 kWh, ce qui représente près de 2 tonnes. Quant à la surface XXL de la nacelle et du pontage, elle permet d'installer 70 m2 de panneaux solaires. Les deux moteurs de 40 kW assurent de fait une autonomie de 100 milles, ce qui est une valeur élevée comparée à celle des autres multicoques du marché propulsés par des moteurs électriques. Sur la nacelle, deux grands berceaux en composite ne manquent pas d'intriguer ; chacun stocke une aile gonflable solidaire d'un mât en carbone rétractable et motorisé. Depuis la console de pilotage à l'avant de la nacelle, Jean Guyon, responsable d'Aeroforce (voir encadré), commande le déploiement de ces deux ailes suivant la puissance du vent. Les deux ailes de 125 m2 peuvent culminer à 23 m de haut. Les profils NACA sont équipés de volets, ce qui offre un rendement bien plus efficace que celui des voiles classiques, comme nous avons pu le constater. Les ailes du ModX 70 sont non seulement très performantes, mais également entièrement automatisées : le système Aeroforce gère en effet l'ensemble des opérations de hissage, d'affalage et de réduction de voilure, ainsi que le contrôle en navigation de l'orientation de l'aile et du volet. Lors de notre essai, nous avons empanné sans même mettre un pied dehors. Quant au module de connectivité, il assure la visualisation de tous les paramètres et la prise en main à distance des opérations de maintenance. ? Le programme de notre sortie entre deux orages quasi tropicaux ? Echouage en bord de plage et belles sensations de glisse sur eau plate. Spécialiste depuis 2002 du trimaran repliable de moins de 30 pieds, Tricat a donc remplacé son valeureux 25. Hull #29, dating from 2012, has spent 4 months at the Monfalcone yard in Italy undergoing a full refit carried out by the builders themselves: structural and mast inspection, bulkhead rework, replacement of engines, sails, electrics, plumbing, electronics, headlinings, upholstery, etc. Nothing escaped the Lagoon experts! What's more, the catamaran, repainted in Star & Stipes blue, is now equipped with solar panels, a lithium battery bank, low-energy air conditioning and a wastewater treatment system. The cost of this more than complete refit (there are four levels of packs) is in the order of € 800K for a unit that trades on the second-hand market for amounts from € 1.3M. This brings the total to € 2.1M, which compares with the cost of a new, fully-loaded Lagoon 60 at around € 3.2M. A substantial difference that could well attract players in the luxury charter market. Cette coque #29 de 2012 a en effet passé 4 mois au chantier de Monfalcone, en Italie, pour suivre un refit intégral mené par le constructeur lui-même : contrôle de la structure et du mât, reprise éventuelle des cloisons, remplacement des moteurs, des voiles, de l'électricité, de la plomberie, de l'électronique, des vaigrages, de la sellerie etc., rien n'a échappé aux experts de Lagoon ! Mieux : le catamaran repeint en bleu Star & Stripes dispose désormais de panneaux solaires, d'un parc de batteries lithium, d'une climatisation basse consommation et d'un traitement des eaux usées. Le coût de ce refit plus que complet (il existe quatre packs) est de l'ordre de 800 k€ pour une unité qui se négocie sur le marché de l'occasion à partir de 1 300 k€. On atteint donc un total de 2 100 k€, à mettre en perspective avec le coût d'un Lagoon 60 neuf et tout équipé, qui émarge autour de 3 200 k€. This new 100% renewable-energy cruising catamaran has already proven its technological prowess by completing a circumnavigation of Spain without using any fossil fuels. The ModX 70 is equipped with the latest technology, enabling it to operate without a generator on board. To achieve this feat without jeopardizing safety, the MODX 70 designers decided to launch a catamaran large enough to support a very powerful battery bank (230 kWh in fact!) while increasing the potential area of the solar panels - it stretches to 750 square feet (70 m²). The two motors are capable of a 100-mile range. The fully automated rig is perhaps the most amazing feature as the two retractable carbon masts - one on each hull - each support a 1,345 sq ft (125 m²) inflatable wing that can reach 75 feet (23 meters) in height. After its sojourn in La Grande-Motte where it made its world premiere, the Tricat 8.50 #1 returned to Brittany, where we got the opportunity to test it in the Gulf of Morbihan. The program for our trip out between two near-tropical squalls? Beaching on the shoreline and enjoying the thrill of gliding across flat water. Tricat, which has specialized in the under-30-foot folding trimaran sector since 2002, is replacing the valiant 25. Still folding, of course, the new 8.50 is logically much more modern than its predecessor, with an added touch of comfort and agility. The lifting daggerboards are found on the floats, freeing up the central hull. As for the companionway hatch, this has 3 positions and can be fitted with a sprayhood and sun awning. C'est en compagnie de Jens Quorning, le dirigeant du chantier éponyme, que nous avons pu naviguer à bord du Dragonfly 36, tout juste élu Multihull off the Year dans la catégorie Voile Sportive. Ce trimaran, dans sa version Performance - avec un mât plus long de 2 mètres - est assurément un multicoque rapide et plaisant à barrer. Sans trop forcer, on navigue à la vitesse du vent? Sur le plan du design, le 36 est le premier Dragonfly à présenter trois étraves inversées - jusqu'alors, la coque centrale conservait une étrave classique. Sous le pont, le nouveau design intérieur comprend des cabines doubles avant et arrière, une salle d'eau séparée, une cuisine équipée et un vaste carré. La finition standard est en frêne, avec l'orme en option. Comme tous les Dragonfly, ce trimaran est repliable grâce à son système Swing Wing encore optimisé ; 1 minute et 30 secondes suffisent à faire passer la largeur de 8,12 m à 3,70 m. Quant aux appendices pivotants, ils permettent de beacher très facilement, comme nous avons pu le constater. Fort de sa belle avant-première mondiale à Miami en février dernier, le C-Cat 38 a enfin dévoilé été au public en Europe. Ce modèle pourrait être résumé à une version rallongée et revue du 37 ; nous avons pu découvrir que ce nouveau millésime apportait bien plus que ça? Pour commencer, les coques sont plus longues de deux pieds - et non un. Les architectes du cabinet de Marc Lombard Design qui prédisaient par rapport au 37 un gain de vitesse appréciable de 0,9 n?ud avec 10 n?uds de vent ne se sont pas trompés, puisque la coque #1, aux mains de Massimo Guardigli et Flavia Proietti (propriétaires de ce catamaran et dirigeants de Comar Yachts), s'est classée première de l'ARC 2024 dans la catégorie Multihull B. Au chapitre des changements, on note qu'un banc arrière confortable et une table plus longue de 35 cm ont été ajoutés dans le cockpit. On découvre également des bossoirs et les barres à roue en composite, tandis que le bout-dehors et le bimini sont en carbone. Les aménagements se déclinent de 2 à 4 cabines avec 2 salles de bains. Le cockpit peut être entièrement fermé avec des panneaux en tissu ou en composite amovibles. Cette formule permet de doubler la surface du carré. On display at the International Multihull Show, the Dracan 42 was available for sea trials, so we obviously jumped at the chance to test this powercat launched by a dynamic team based in Poland. Powered by twin 300 HP outboards, the Dracan reached 30 knots. On the day of our test, the sea was perfectly flat, but crossing the wakes of several other boats at full speed gave us a good idea of how it would handle in waves. In the curves, the 42 stays flat. The modern design of this semi-open hull is unmistakably successful, and the carefully designed layout, with 2, 3 or 4 cabins, will adapt to any program. Nous avons pu profiter d'une dizaine de n?uds de vent à la Grande-Motte pour tester enfin l'Excess 13. Le nouveau plan Lombard s'est révélé plutôt à l'aise dans ces conditions légères : il glissait à plus de 7 n?uds sous gennaker et ne demandait qu'à allonger ses deux sillages. L'Excess 13 était sans doute l'une des World Premieres les plus attendues à La Grande-Motte? ce modèle ne fait en effet rien comme les autres, à commencer par porter un patronyme un brin provocateur - on adore ça ! Comme pour aller au bout de la blague, on en était à 13 unités vendues le jour de l'ouverture du salon? Plus sérieusement, la principale nouveauté de ce catamaran, c'est sa signature. C'est en effet le cabinet Lombard qui est à l'?uvre, en collaboration avec Jean-Marc Piaton pour le design intérieur. Nous avons découvert une nacelle au volume contenu - en témoignent les très larges passavants -, une cuisine qui s'ouvre sur le cockpit et des jupes arrière basculantes. On remarque également le design futuriste des bossoirs, l'imposante portée des banquettes de barre basculantes et les biminis de protections au design aérien. A noter enfin : un système de récupération d'eau sur le rouf, des coupe-circuits (enfin) faciles d'accès dans un coffrage dédié et enfin des portes des cabines qui font office? de portes de placards. L'Excess 13 est décliné en 3 et 4 cabines, avec un gréement standard ou Pulse Line. ? We were able to take advantage of ten knots or so of wind off La Grande-Motte to finally test the Excess 13. The new Lombard design proved to be quite comfortable in these light conditions: it glided along at over 7 knots under gennaker and was just begging to stretch out its two wakes behind it. The Excess 13 was undoubtedly one of the most eagerly awaited World Premieres at La Grande-Motte... this model is indeed unlike any other, starting with the fact that it bears a somewhat risky name - but we love it! And almost as a punchline to complete the joke, 13 units were sold on the opening day of the show... More seriously though, the main new thing about this catamaran is the signature it bears. The Lombard design team has been at work here, in collaboration with Jean Marc Piaton for the interior design. We discovered a nacelle of contained volume (as evidenced by the very wide side-decks), a galley that opens onto the cockpit, and fold-down sugarscoops. We like the futuristic design of the davits and the imposing span of the folding helm seats and the airy design of their protective biminis. Also noteworthy is a water recovery system on the coachroof, easy-access circuit breakers (at last) in a dedicated locker, and cabin doors that double as closet doors.
