► A graduate of Sciences Po Paris, 31-year-old Nicolas Marcillaud could have become a senior civil servant… but in the end, it was his taste for adventure, combined with a strong fascination for ice, that led the young man toward a particularly ambitious project: sailing around the Arctic. ► In other words, a mini circumnavigation of 9,000 miles by linking the Northwest Passage and the Northeast Passage. Each route has already been sailed individually, but never both in a single season. That is precisely the challenge Nicolas has taken on. ► With a set of specifications requiring the ability to beach the boat - or even haul it onto the ice - while still prioritizing seaworthiness for ocean crossings, light-air performance, and ease of maintenance, the adventurer chose Paradox, a 10-meter trimaran. Extremely light (2 tons) and minimalist (no engine), this multihull was built in 1997. We discovered her at the end of a refit in Hennebont, near Lorient. Nicolas opted to reuse numerous components to reduce costs, of course, but also as part of an environmentally conscious approach. ► After an initial trial voyage in the ice this summer, Paradox will set off again in 2027 to complete her sailing circumnavigation of the polar world. ► Sign up for our newsletter and win a free two-month subscription to Multihulls World by clicking here: https://bit.ly/48JP1Vk ► Become a FREE SUBSCRIBER to Multihulls World's YouTube page now - https://www.youtube.com/c/MultihullsWorld ► Log on to our website to discover over 600 multihulls tests! ► While on a testing and reporting tour in southern Brittany, Multihulls World had the opportunity to visit the facilities of electric motor manufacturer Temo. ► The company’s story began in Nantes in 2018, driven by Alexandre Seux and Justine Perussel. One year later, the famous Temo450 - also known as the electric sculling oar - was launched. The young company moved to Vannes in 2023 while expanding its product range with the Temo1000 in 2024, followed last year by the Outpod1000 and Pod1000 pods, both also available in 3000 (3 kW) versions. Luc Joessel, one of the sales managers, presented all these products to us in the showroom: “We have already sold 7,500 units worldwide!” ► The site, staffed by 23 employees, also includes a large open-plan office space. Luc then guided us through a spacious communal area to the workshop where all the motors are manufactured - except for the 450. This is also where Temo products are serviced. “They come with a 3-year warranty, and all components are replaceable,” Justine explained. Outside, a test pool allows the motors to be trialed. ► The full article will appear in our upcoming Forever Green special issue. ► www.temofrance.com ► Sign up for our newsletter and win a free two-month subscription to Multihulls World by clicking here: https://bit.ly/48JP1Vk ► Become a FREE SUBSCRIBER to Multihulls World's YouTube page now - https://www.youtube.com/c/MultihullsWorld ► Log on to our website to discover over 600 multihulls tests! ► Founded just five years ago, the Astus Boat Club association now brings together around 60 Astus trimaran owners and has recently introduced a Trophy system rewarding participation and results in various regattas open to multihulls rated under the Multi 2000 rule. ► In this context, Pierre Breban, president of the association, invited me to take part as media crewman aboard the Golfe Morbihan Tour, an event particularly technical when it comes to current management. Currents can be extremely strong in this area, while numerous counter-currents can be found close to beaches, headlands, and rocks. ► So I joined Jean-Hubert Pommois, head of the shipyard, aboard his Astus 26.5, together with Jérôme, our helmsman. Organized by the SRV (Société des Régates de Vannes), this regatta is unique in that it brings together highly diverse fleets: classic rigs, foiling boards, monohull cruisers, dinghies, and of course cruising multihulls - 63 entries in total! ► Six Astus boats were entered in the cruising multihull category: four Astus 20.5s, one older-generation Astus 22, in addition to our Astus 26.5. The course had to be shortened slightly due to a rather light easterly breeze, but we had a fantastic time and even managed to secure a podium finish! ► www.astusboatsclub.eu ► Become a FREE SUBSCRIBER to Multihulls World's YouTube page now - https://www.youtube.com/c/MultihullsWorld ► Log on to our website to discover over 600 multihulls tests! ► The 37th edition of the Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show lived up to expectations from May 21 to 24. With 300 exhibitors, 800 boats, 2,500 marine-related products, and no fewer than 50,000 visitors, the event has firmly established itself as Australia’s largest boat show. ► Although the island continent is home to only 26 million inhabitants - barely 8% of the population of the United States - it nevertheless boasts a large community of sailing enthusiasts. Recreational boatbuilders are also very well established there. ► Kevin Green, our Australian correspondent, attended the show on our behalf and, of course, visited the multihulls on display, including the Australian-built Mahi and Voyager models. Numerous Asian-based brands were also present, such as Cure Marine, HH, Iliad, and Seawind. As for the major players like Aquila, Excess, Fountaine Pajot, Lagoon, and Robertson & Caine, they certainly did not miss this event, which has become a must-attend show. ► www.sanctuarycoveboatshow.com ► Become a FREE SUBSCRIBER to Multihulls World's YouTube page now - https://www.youtube.com/c/MultihullsWorld ► Log on to our website to discover over 600 multihulls tests! ► The Multihulls World community is already familiar with the Tricat 6.90, which we previously tested in particularly rough conditions. For this trial of the new sportier version, the breeze barely exceeded 10 knots, yet that was already enough to feel some impressive bursts of acceleration in the gusts. ► Why “XL”? Because each beam is 8" (20 cm) longer. As for the mast - an AG+ carbon profile - it gains 1’8" (50 cm), supporting a 258 sq ft (24 m²) mainsail and a 129 sq ft (12 m²) solent, while also being able to fly downwind sails from the masthead. The deck hardware has been optimized as well, with upgraded jib tracks, barber haulers, and Cunningham controls. Inside, several carbon-fiber trim panels clearly show that the weight-saving campaign is underway! This new model retains its ultra-efficient folding system - one minute per float - allowing the beam to shrink to 8' (2.45 m) for transport. ► Technical Specifications: Builder: Tricat Naval Architects: Tricat / Jack Michal Length: 22’8”/25’7” (6.9/7.8 m) Beam: 8’0”/16’5” (2.45/5 m) Draft: 11”/3’11” (0.28/1.2 m) Displacement: 1,587 lbs (720 kg) Engine: 3.5/6 hp outboard CE Category: C5/D6 Price: €95,000 excluding VAT ► www.trimaran-tricat.com ► Sign up for our newsletter and win a free two-month subscription to Multihulls World by clicking here: https://bit.ly/48JP1Vk ► Become a FREE SUBSCRIBER to Multihulls World's YouTube page now - https://www.youtube.com/c/MultihullsWorld ► Log on to our website to discover over 600 multihulls tests! ► Saturday, May 16 ► Over the past few days, sargassum seaweed has started to appear. At first, there were only a few isolated brown patches, but gradually the brown algae began forming long chains across the surface of the water. Since the dolphins at the beginning of our crossing, we haven’t seen any more marine mammals, much to my disappointment. I must admit that I still keep scanning the horizon whenever I step onto the deck, with the slightly naïve hope of spotting a whale in the distance. ► After several days at sea, Punch is also beginning to show the marks of the crossing. A thin layer of salt seems to settle everywhere constantly, and in the saloon, crumbs, dust, and flying fish scales quickly start to accumulate. So we brought out buckets of seawater to give the saloon a thorough cleaning, and honestly, having a fresh and tidy living space again feels incredibly good. Fresh water is also becoming precious: we only have 250 liters left on board, so naturally we have to be careful. Although, quite ironically, the announcement suddenly gave everyone an overwhelming urge to take a shower! ► Our sweet supplies are also running dangerously low, including breakfast essentials. Since there are only three chocolate bars left on board, I decided to make crêpes to bring a little comfort to the crew. `` ► We’re all starting to feel a bit worn out from the night watches, the heat, and the constant motion of the boat. Snatching a few minutes of sleep during the day has become almost essential if we want to handle the night shifts in good condition. ► For a long time, offering a powercat that couldn’t make more than 20 knots was tantamount to commercial suicide… but times are changing, and new “slow life” lifestyles are gaining momentum. ► In fact, today, boaters are looking for vessels capable of covering long distances at 8–10 knots while consuming little fuel; they now readily accept that their powercat isn’t designed to cross a pretty bay in less than 20 minutes... Aventura Yachting is therefore offering a variation on its best-selling 37 Sail, featuring a more streamlined and elongated stern design. The rig and deck hardware have been removed, while the motors (still powering saildrive transmission) have been upgraded from 20 or 30 HP to 57, 80, or 110 HP. And although the interior layout remains the same, a brand-new flybridge version will be available. ► Technical Specifications: Builder: Aventura Yachts Architect: Lasta Design Studio Length: 35’9” (10.9 m) Beam: 19’6” (5.94 m) Draft: 3’3” (1 m) Displacement: 17,650 lbs (8 t) Motors: 2 x 57 to 115 HP Cruising speed: 8 to 12 knots Fuel: 2 x 132 US gal (2 x 500 l) Cabins: 3 or 4 Price: € 293,500 ex-tax ► Sign up for our newsletter and win a free two-month subscription to Multihulls World by clicking here: https://bit.ly/48JP1Vk ► Become a FREE SUBSCRIBER to Multihulls World's YouTube page now - https://www.youtube.com/c/MultihullsWorld ► Log on to our website to discover over 600 multihulls tests! ► For the past 25 years, Catlante has been developing the concept of all-inclusive cabin charters aboard catamarans. The formula has proved so successful that the operator has become the leader in this niche market. ► Invited by Hervé Bellaïche, the company’s CEO, our contributor Ludovic Roussille boarded the Catlante Néo in Marseille, the newest multihull in the fleet - a Samana 59. ► “Our outing consisted of a cruise to the Frioul Islands alongside a group of local influencers. I was very pleasantly surprised by the quality of the experience, which included the services of a highly welcoming crew, delicious cuisine, and a perfect balance between sailing and discovering the local area. I also appreciated the diversity of the people on board and the very natural connections that formed during the trip. Aboard the Catlante Néo, the magic truly happens, and the evening was delightful.” ► All that remains now is for Ludovic to try another option - shared multihull ownership - and we’ll have a complete article on the subject of more affordable cruising. ► www.catlante-catamarans.com ► Sign up for our newsletter and win a free two-month subscription to Multihulls World by clicking here: https://bit.ly/48JP1Vk ► Become a FREE SUBSCRIBER to Multihulls World's YouTube page now - https://www.youtube.com/c/MultihullsWorld ► Log on to our website to discover over 600 multihulls tests! ► The ORC yard presents its first new model since it was taken over by Grand Large Yachting in 2023. ► The ORC 52.2 keeps the excellent foundation of the 50 while offering an interior redesigned and refined by Franck Darnet Design. “We got an extra 200 kg, not any more,” jokes Antoine Gicquel, project manager at the firm. At the same time, the use of carbon bulkheads in series has helped keep the weight estimate at 10.5 t. We discover brighter, clearer layouts (many openings have been added and/or enlarged) and far more careful finishing - overall, it is undeniably more welcoming. The sail plan has remained faithful to that of the 50, which translates into unchanged speed potential. With 15 knots of wind during our downwind run off Groix, the 52.2 #1 sold to a couple of Americans managed an average of 8.5 knots upwind (55° from the actual wind). ► Monday, May 11 ► We’ve now been at sea for five days. The whole crew has, more or less quickly, shifted from the rhythm of life ashore to that of the ocean. For me, the first two days were a bit difficult; I put on the Scopoderm patch for seasickness a little too late, and it took me nearly 48 hours to get my motion sickness under control. But eventually, the body adapts. And then there’s that little magical ritual that changes everything: my morning coffee, one-on-one with the Atlantic Ocean. ► Life on board revolves around simple things: lunches, dinners, night watches to keep a constant eye on the catamaran. Every now and then, when the sea is calm and the timing is right, we also take showers from the aft platforms. ► One lunchtime, while we were eating, dolphins appeared alongside Punch. There must have been around ten of them, and they stayed with us for quite a while, playing in the bow wave and between the hulls. Everyone left their plates to share that magical moment with them. Moments like these break through the routine on board and remind us just how alive the ocean can be. ► Fishing is also starting to become part of our daily routine, whether successful or not. We caught our first two mahi-mahi - small ones, but deeply satisfying after days of watching the lines trail behind the two hulls. And then there are the disappointments too: six fish lost, and several lines cleanly snapped. ► The weather is becoming warmer and more pleasant. The days are now very sunny, with the occasional passing cloud, and when the wind drops, the engines take over to maintain a steady speed of around 7 to 8 knots. ► We meet at Port des Minimes in La Rochelle; on pontoon 20, one of the berths reserved for multihulls, I quickly spot the grey hulls and orange UV strip before being welcomed aboard by the skipper. ► Éric Pilato, 62, was born in La Rochelle and, entrepreneur though he was - and still is - he has always lived by the sea. Today, freshly graduated with a 200 GT Master’s certificate obtained in Belgium and Marseille, he operates - and enjoys - his Excess 11. ► “I wanted to buy a second-hand sailboat. My wife told me: ‘I’m warning you, if you don’t buy a catamaran, I’m not coming aboard.’ So, a multihull it would be… Eventually I came across Excess 11 #151, one of the last models equipped with the self-tacking jib, which was due to be displayed at the 2023 Grand Pavois boat show. It was a three-cabin version whose layout suited me perfectly. I asked Christopher, the dealer, whether the catamaran was available for sale. The answer was yes, so I bought it and was quickly able to secure the marina berth I had already applied for a few years earlier. Today, I operate the catamaran and have built a relationship with the brand’s management team, first as a contributing owner and then as a brand ambassador. One day - I’m not really sure why - I asked Thibaut (de Montvalon, Excess Managing Director, editor’s note) whether anyone had ever completed a solo Atlantic crossing aboard an Excess 11. He told me that, to his knowledge, no one had…” ► Éric, who has had the opportunity to sail aboard the Ultim trimaran Sodebo, therefore decided to embark on his own Route du Rhum. He will leave La Rochelle just after the 2026 Grand Pavois and sail directly to Pointe-à-Pitre, joining the race fleet that will depart Saint-Malo three weeks later - with the aim of arriving at roughly the same time. ► The skipper has also decided to establish a true passage time by not using his engines: a genuine solo, non-stop sailing transatlantic crossing. ► Preparations for Skiboo 2 and her skipper are already underway — solo training sessions, catamaran optimisation… Multihulls World will of course be following this adventure for you! ► With their hurricane-damaged catamaran now moved to a different spot in the boatyard and leveled up to dispel any worries about distortion of the hulls, Raf and Sascha could set about their plans for the shipping container directly behind them. ► Some of their YouTube followers were hoping to see them get stuck into working on the boat and getting the rebuild advancing faster, but the value of having a real workshop and a storage area cannot be underestimated. From their experience of fitting out their previous boat, fitting out a shipping container came as quite an easy - if time-consuming - task. After leveling up the container and with a few repairs undertaken, they’ve ended up with great facilities including a long workbench with a sink at one end and all their tools and spare parts and materials neatly organized. The crew will now be able to get the rebuild project moving so much quicker. And being able to have this right behind the boat, well, it’s the stuff of dreams for anyone doing a major refit. ► With all their gear shifted from its former location to where the boat now lies, the final job was to bring across the beautiful staircase they’d made last year, but unfortunately, it was just a little too short for the new spot, so they had to construct a new one. This will be so much safer and quicker to use than a ladder like almost all the other boats in the yard (particularly when carrying tools or materials up and down), so that in itself is going to speed the job along considerably. ► Work then began on the inside, with much cutting out of fiberglass from the underside of the coachroof, before they could begin moving in the right direction to get it all back together and adding back in all the strength that had been compromised when the boat had been lying upside down in the mangroves in Carriacou. Quite a bit of trial and error was required to get the epoxy to the right consistency, but they got there in the end. ► As for commencing work on the exterior of the hulls, they enlisted the help of Dareen and Jay from Fiberglass Pro Grenada who quickly set about cutting out damaged areas and digging out the rotten balsa core before replacing sections of it with a foam core material and epoxy. To allow the professionals to complete their work meant giving them access to the area where the forward crossbeam attaches to the hull. The beam itself was trashed in the hurricane and held together with timber and rope lashings, so it needed to be removed anyway, but not before the very delicate operation moving a bird’s nest they found in the end of the beam. So Raf and Sascha had to work late into the evening to get the beam out in time for the next day’s work. Completing all the fiberglass repairs to the hull has really added momentum to the rebuild and it looks like the project has finally got the wind in its sails. ► Who: Raf and Sascha Where: Grenada, West Indies Multihull: Lagoon 450S YouTube: @SpearItAnimal ► Sign up for our newsletter and win a free two-month subscription to Multihulls World by clicking here: https://bit.ly/48JP1Vk ► Become a FREE SUBSCRIBER to Multihulls World's YouTube page now - https://www.youtube.com/c/MultihullsWorld ► Log on to our website to discover over 600 multihulls tests! ► Wednesday, May 6th, 12:34 p.m., heading for Martinique ► When you dream of an Atlantic crossing, you mostly picture the night watches, dolphins bow-riding the keel, and sunsets out in the middle of the Atlantic. Much less the days spent provisioning the boat. Yet even before setting sail, it’s almost an expedition in its own right. In Portugal, we started by loading everything that needed to last: canned goods, pasta, rice, dry provisions, snacks, and above all, liters and liters of fresh water. 240 liters, to be exact. Day after day, the boat filled up with bags, crates, and carefully arranged supplies stored between the compartments and the galley on board. Perishables, on the other hand, were loaded at the last moment before departure: fruit, vegetables, and a few delicious dishes prepared by the French restaurant La Villa - meant to keep us going during the first days at sea until Las Palmas. My father had prepared a long, two-page provisioning list. And yet, that didn’t stop us from forgetting… a grater and a “rasp” (fine grater). On the other hand, there was no missing bread. One of the crew members seems to consider it absolutely essential to the success of the crossing, so that by the time we were in Las Palmas, a large part of the restocking had turned into a stockpile of bread in all its forms. As for me, I also thought it essential to bring a few hydrating face masks. Everyone has their priorities before an Atlantic crossing. ► After days of preparation, waiting, and final tweaks at the dock, we finally set sail. And honestly, it feels so good to not be tied up to the dock anymore! ► Developed by a consortium bringing together research institutions, the textile industry and the sailmaking sector - notably All Purpose - the TRILam BioTex program was presented to us during Nice Boating Tomorrow. ► The project explores a still largely untapped avenue in the marine industry: sails incorporating bio-based fibers. The goal is, of course, to reduce environmental impact without compromising performance. ► Today, almost all sails rely on petrochemical-based materials, with very few credible end-of-life solutions apart from reuse initiatives such as 727 Sailbags, Voilensac or Les Toiles du Large. TRILam BioTex aims to change this model by progressively introducing natural fibers, particularly flax and, more recently, nettle. The ambition goes beyond simply replacing materials, by developing a membrane that is both high-performance and, ultimately, recyclable or compostable. ► Unlike initiatives that remain largely theoretical, sails developed under the program have already been tested in real-world conditions, including offshore racing. The project is now reaching a new milestone with its deployment on production multihulls: “we’re starting to see these materials appear on trimarans such as Tricat and Dragonfly,” notes Frédéric Moreau, co-manager of All Purpose. ► www.trilambiotex.fr ► Sign up for our newsletter and win a free two-month subscription to Multihulls World by clicking here: https://bit.ly/48JP1Vk ► Become a FREE SUBSCRIBER to Multihulls World's YouTube page now - https://www.youtube.com/c/MultihullsWorld ► Log on to our website to discover over 600 multihulls tests! ► Presented at Nice Boating Tomorrow by Victor Nave for E-Nav Systems, the M10 electric outboard was developed by Momentum, a young brand based in Singapore. ► With its 10 kW output, equivalent to a combustion engine of around 20 hp, the M10 is clearly aimed at tender use. In this segment, expectations are well defined: ease of use, range and reliability. The first striking point is the installation. ► The system is offered as a package including the motor and its lithium battery (M6 model), connected by a single cable. Installation requires no specific tools, following a plug-and-play approach. “The idea is to keep it as simple as a conventional petrol outboard,” explains Victor Nave. ► Under way, the M10 covers the usual tender requirements: reaching the harbour, handling trips around the anchorage or carrying out everyday transfers. At moderate speed, the claimed range is impressive, reaching up to 17 to 18 hours at 5 knots. The motor is also designed for more dynamic use over shorter periods, with speeds in the region of 15 to 20 knots. The M10 is suitable both for practical utility use and more recreational boating. ► Handling remains simple and intuitive, with a multi-position trim adjustment that can be set in seconds depending on conditions, load or intended use. ► The M10 is available in three shaft lengths - up to 64 cm - to suit different transom heights. ► www.momentumelectricmarineeurope.com ► Sign up for our newsletter and win a free two-month subscription to Multihulls World by clicking here: https://bit.ly/48JP1Vk ► Become a FREE SUBSCRIBER to Multihulls World's YouTube page now - https://www.youtube.com/c/MultihullsWorld ► Log on to our website to discover over 600 multihulls tests! ► Previewed at the IMS, the Outremer 48 shares the same length as the Outremer 45, but delivers features much closer to the new-generation models represented by the Outremer 55 and 52. ► The new model is noticeably wider (by 41 cm) and heavier by 1.8 tonnes, improving tolerance and, above all, offering a payload capacity of 4 tonnes. Sail area has been increased so that the sail area-to-weight ratio remains favorable for strong performance. On deck, it adopts the “mixed” helm station concept, with a movable wheel to port and a tiller to starboard. Inside, the saloon benefits from larger windows (+45% surface area), and the builder offers a custom layout for the forward port cabin. A hybrid propulsion system is available as an option. ► Technical Specifications: Builder: Outremer Yachting Architects: VPLP Length: 48’ (14.63 m) Beam: 24’10” (7.56 m) Draft: 4’1”/6’11” (1.25/2.1 m) Displacement: 23,150 lbs (10.5 t) Mainsail: 882 sq ft (82 m²) Genoa: 538 sq ft (50 m²) Asymmetric spi: 1,937 sq ft (180 m²) Price : 1,300,000 € ex-VAT ► Sign up for our newsletter and win a free two-month subscription to Multihulls World by clicking here: https://bit.ly/48JP1Vk ► Become a FREE SUBSCRIBER to Multihulls World's YouTube page now - https://www.youtube.com/c/MultihullsWorld ► Log on to our website to discover over 600 multihulls tests!
