Our Australian correspondent Kevin Green got the opportunity for a test sail aboard the XF75, a luxurious powercat that is as high-performance as it is exclusive, with a superstructure that doubles as a helipad. This powercat, offered by New Zealand manufacturer Voodoo Yachts and unveiled at the recent Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show, features a carefully optimized hull and foils that allow it to reach speeds of up to 50 knots. In addition to this impressive speed for a 75-foot vessel, the Voodoo boasts fuel consumption well below that of an 85- to 90-foot monohull superyacht offering the same features: the usable area measures some 3,000 square feet (279 m²)... ? Full test in Multtihulls World N°203. ? Most of us have probably forgotten about the Edel Cat 35, Kat 28, Corneel 26, Aventura 23, and 28, to name just a few. Back in the mid-eighties, these Open catamarans were giant sports catamarans with a hard cockpit instead of a trampoline. The Aventura 23 and 28, based on older models, revived the concept in the early 2000s and these endured for about fifteen years... but since then, there hasn't been much to report. So it was with great interest that we discovered the Ventio, presented for the first time at the La Rochelle boat show. This catamaran, designed by Nicolas Purnu (a former partner of Marc Lombard, now based in Brittany with his own firm), has no hard nacelle - the central area is fully protected by a large retractable canopy - at least in its Open Space version. The galley will be located aft of the mast bulkhead, along with a U-shaped deck saloon and a large 85 cm x 135 cm (33½ x 52") table on a sliding base. The berths are located in the hulls. The Ventio #1, rigged with a carbon mast and daggerboards, is clearly performance-oriented while offering comfortable accommodation in the cabins. The builder offers a wide range of options, including a central cockpit with a composite coachroof, rigs of varying power, and a twin electric powertrain. ? ? Essai complet dans Multicoques Mag N°232. ? On les avait un peu oubliés, les Edel Cat 35, Kat 28 et autres Corneel 26 et autres Aventura 23 et 28 - pour ne citer qu'eux. Au milieu des années 1980, ces catamarans Open se présentent comme des catamarans de sport géants où le trampoline est remplacé par un cockpit en dur. Les Aventura 23 et 28, en reprenant les moules de plus anciens modèles, ont relancé le concept au début des années 2000 pour tenir une quinzaine d'années? mais depuis, pas grand-chose à signaler. C'est donc avec un grand intérêt que nous avons découvert le Ventio, présenté pour la première fois au Grand Pavois de La Rochelle. Ce catamaran dessiné par Nicolas Purnu (ancien associé de Marc Lombard et désormais établi à Lorient dans son propre cabinet) est donc dépourvu de nacelle en dur - la zone centrale est intégralement protégée par une grande capote rétractable - en tous cas dans sa déclinaison OpenSpace. La cuisine prend place à l'arrière de la cloison de mât, accompagnée d'un salon de pont en U et d'une grande table de 85 cm x 135 cm sur pied coulissant. Les couchettes sont aménagées dans les coques. Ce Ventio #1, équipé d'un mât carbone rallongé et de dérives, est clairement typé performance tout en offrant des aménagements confortables dans les cabines. Le constructeur propose de très nombreuses déclinaisons - nacelle centrale avec toit composite, gréement plus ou moins puissant et double motorisation électrique. ? ? Our Sydney-based correspondent Kevin Green had the opportunity to sail aboard the Cure 55 following its world premiere at the Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show. No sooner had he stepped ashore than our tester gave us his first impressions: "I've just tested the Cure 55. This is without doubt the most impressive performance cruiser I have sailed in years (and that's not just because it's Australian!) Fast, lightweight and quite maneuverable, this catamaran really has a lot to offer for 3.5 million Australian dollars." In fact, the Cure 55 #1, which is the Performance version, is a sharp all-carbon catamaran that makes the most of its one-piece structure to keep its displacement down to just over 9 tons. The hulls are angled at 2.5° like the old Catanas, with very fine entry, slightly inverted bows, and daggerboards. The Hall Spars rig is obviously also in carbon, as is the Park Avenue boom that sits flush with the coachroof. The result? The Cure 55 reaches 20 knots with disconcerting ease... ? Le mano a mano 38 vs 380 n'aura pas eu lieu, la faute à un mistral un peu trop vaillant qui soufflait largement à plus de 30 n?uds au début de la journée d'essai prévue à Bonifacio. Notre essayeur Brieuc Maisonneuve a donc pu naviguer à bord du nouveau Lagoon 38 dans des conditions toniques mais le 380, lui, est resté à quai. Premier retour à chaud : « on est sorti avec la toile avec 20 n?uds établis et des claques à 30 ; j'ai trouvé que le catamaran était très stable de route malgré des vagues très courtes et que la barre était très douce. J'ai regretté en revanche le choix d'un foc autovireur : la voile est difficile à régler aux allures débridées et manque de puissance au près, ce qui se traduit par un cap un peu décevant. En ce qui concerne le confort offert à bord, il est exceptionnel pour la taille et l'aménagement de la coque tribord est une réussite. ». ? The head-to-head between 38 and the 380 ultimately never took place, all down to the Mistral that was coming through a little too hard, blowing at over 30 knots early on our test day we'd scheduled out of Bonifacio. So, our boat tester Brieuc Maisonneuve got to sail aboard the new Lagoon 38 in lively conditions, but the 380 remained alongside the dock. His initial reaction: "We set sail in 20 knots, gusting 30. I found the catamaran very stable despite the very short sea, and the helm was very smooth. On the downside, I wasn't so sure about the choice of a self-tacking jib: the sail is difficult to trim at points further off the wind and lacks power when sailing close to the wind, which can result in a slightly disappointing heading. As for the comfort on board, it is exceptional for the size of the boat, and the layout of the starboard hull is a real success." ? Notre grand reporter Briec Maisonneuve a trouvé la meilleure façon de se rendre le 22 mai dernier à la journée de présentation de l'usine Yot à Aveiro, au Portugal : il a tout simplement calé le convoyage d'un Neel 43 au départ de Carteret, en Manche, vers Porto, aux bonnes dates ! « Je suis parti en solitaire le 17 mai à 12h et suis arrivé le 21 à 15h? avec seulement un litre de gazole dans le réservoir ! ». Les conditions de cette longue traite de 650 milles autour de la Bretagne et dans le golfe de Gascogne ont été en effet plutôt clémentes avec beaucoup de portant - mais également des calmes. Brieuc a également rencontré des orques qui sont juste restés curieux. Le périple s'est poursuivi vers Portimao et l'objectif final est Venise (mais cette fois notre marin-journaliste naviguera en double). ? The Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show is undoubtedly the most glamorous, immersive, and unmissable boating event in the southern hemisphere. Held from May 22 to 25, the show brought together more than 330 exhibitors, nearly 760 boats, and over 2,500 marine products and types of equipment. ? On Thursday May 22, Catana Group held an open day at its brand-new production facility for Yot, its new range of powercats. Located on the shores of a perfectly sheltered stretch of water in Aveiro, just south of Porto, in Portugal, the 5-acre (20,000 m²) site is adjacent to that of Xquisite Yachts. This is where the Yot 36 and 41 are produced, ahead of a larger model which we'll be hearing more about very soon. The shipyard will eventually employ 450 people and have an annual production capacity of 200 units. Le succès des rassemblements Propriétaires de catamarans Fontaine Pajot ne se dément pas : pour la 11ème édition, pas moins de 22 multicoques à voile (de l'Isla 40 au Samana 59) et deux powercats ont répondu présents pour un programme convivial au départ de Punta Ala, en Toscane (Italie). Le moment fort de cet événement a été la « régate » vers l'île d'Elbe : cette belle virée avec une belle brise de 15 n?uds de vent et mer plate a conduit la flotte à Porto Azzuro en moins de trois heures. L'équipage de l'Isla 40 Terre, mené par Richard et Dorothée, n'a rien lâché jusqu'à se faire coiffer sur la ligne par l'Astréa 42 Migaloo 2, la faute aux dévents fantasques provoqués par le relief au fond de la baie. La bouée d'arrivée, de fait, n'était pas si facile à rejoindre sous voile, motivant certains participants à terminer le parcours au moteur. Le troisième catamaran à franchir la ligne était l'Astréa 42 du team Fountaine Pajot - une place honorable compte tenu que ce multicoque de location ne disposait pas de gennaker ni spi. Pour le retour, les voiles de portant ont de nouveau été établies à la faveur du vent qui a pris de la gauche. Cette fois, c'est Maona, un Tanna 47 qui a d'abord pris le contrôle, tiré par son gennaker rouge et blanc. A mi-parcours, Lillesol, un Elba 45 boosté par son grand spi asymétrique tout bleu a bien tenté de reprendre l'avantage, mais rien n'y a fait. Terre, malgré son gabarit réduit, a une nouvelle fois démontré l'intérêt de disposer d'une carène toute propre? et d'hélices repliables en grimpant sur la troisième marche du podium. A terre se sont enchaînées agapes et dégustations de produits locaux. La grande parade autour de l'île mystérieuse à l'ouest du port et le « mouillage en fleur » prévu dans le golfe de Follonica, faute à un vent fort de secteur nord ont été opportunément remplacés par des ateliers voilerie et électronique, pour le plus grand plaisir des 120 participants. ? The success of the Fontaine Pajot catamaran owners' gatherings continues unabated: For the 11th edition, no fewer than 22 sailing multihulls (from the Isla 40 to the Samana 59) and two powercats turned up for a friendly program out of Punta Ala, in Tuscany, Italy. The highlight of the event was the "race" to the island of Elba: this beautiful trip took place in a good 15-knot breeze with flat seas, taking the fleet to Porto Azzuro in less than three hours. The crew of the Isla 40 Terre, led by Richard and Dorothée, gave it their all until they were pipped at the post by the Astréa 42 Migaloo 2, due to the unpredictable windshifts caused by the shape of the land at the entrance to the bay. The finish line was not easy to reach under sail, prompting some participants to complete the course under motor. The third catamaran to cross the line was the Astréa 42 from the Fountaine Pajot team - an honorable place considering that this charter multihull had neither gennaker nor spinnaker. For the return leg, the downwind sails were set again as the wind shifted more to port. This time, it was Maona, a Tanna 47, that took the lead, pulled along by its red and white gennaker. Halfway through the race, Lillesol, an Elba 45 boosted by its large blue asymmetrical spinnaker, tried hard to regain the lead, but to no avail. Terre, despite its small size, once again demonstrated the advantages of having a clean hull... and folding propellers, climbing onto the third step of the podium. Back ashore, there was a feast of local produce. The grand parade around the mysterious island to the west of the port and the "flower-filled anchorage" planned in the Gulf of Follonica had to be abandoned due to strong northerly winds, but this was no problem as the 120 participants enjoyed sailing and electronics workshops instead. ?
