We thought this would be a quick fix… it wasn’t. After arriving in Dar es Salaam, we set out to tick off a list of jobs before leaving the boat behind at anchor. One of the biggest? Fixing our anchor chain and windlass issue. We replaced the motor. We tried a deep water drop. We even swapped the chain ends. And still… nothing worked. What followed was a mix of problem-solving, frustration, a bit of trial and error… and eventually stepping away to reset before diving back in. With the boat prepped as best we could, we locked everything down—taking extra precautions before leaving her unattended—and headed off on a surf trip we’ve been looking forward to for a long time. Next stop: airport, road trip… and new waves.

After a tough offshore passage, we arrive in Tanzania for our first real taste of Africa… and it wasn’t quite what we expected. Our journey begins in Tanga, a quiet coastal town where we reset after days at sea, navigate the full boat check-in process, and explore the incredible Amboni Caves — the largest limestone cave system in East Africa. From there, we sail south to Zanzibar, where everything shifts. More people, more movement… and a completely different energy. From busy beaches and traditional dhow boats to the contrast between tourism and local life, this stop gave us a glimpse into a side of Africa that’s hard to put into words. This wasn’t a storm… but it might have been one of the most uncomfortable passages we’ve had. Sailing from Seychelles to Tanzania, we thought we’d timed the weather well. After exploring the outer islands of the Seychelles, we returned to Mahé with a growing list of things that needed attention onboard. From a fridge that wasn’t staying cold to Starlink dropping out and a few other boat jobs piling up, it was time to regroup and find some solutions. But living this life in remote places doesn’t always make things easy… so we made the call to send Dad on a whirlwind trip across the world — collecting a passport, sourcing spare parts, and catching up with family along the way. That meant the rest of us stayed behind to keep things running… with Bella stepping up and taking the helm for the week. While Dad raced between flights, we slowed things down a little — exploring more of Mahé, visiting a beautiful spice garden with friends, and continuing life aboard as a family. Eventually, with everyone reunited and a few key problems solved, we were ready to move forward once again. After more than 1000 nautical miles across the Indian Ocean, we finally arrived in the Seychelles — waking up to towering green mountains after months of sailing through the low coral atolls of the Maldives and Chagos. But as every cruiser knows… days don’t always go to plan. Before we could properly explore the island, our generator decided to cause some trouble, forcing a quick repair and a reminder that flexibility is part of life at sea. Once things were running again we were finally able to get out and experience some island life in the Seychelles — including something a little unexpected… With the kids getting older it felt like the perfect opportunity for a new milestone: driving lessons. Meanwhile, Finn had his own adventure ahead when he joined a local sport fishing tournament, heading out before midnight to see what the Indian Ocean had in store. After our visit to remote Chagos, it was time to set sail once again. In this episode, we make the 1,000 nautical mile passage from Chagos to our first African country — Seychelles. With a band of storms sweeping across the Indian Ocean, we chose a lighter wind route just north of the system. The result? A comfortable… but slow seven days at sea. Offshore life quickly settles into rhythm — sail changes, night watches under a full moon, and even a rather messy stowaway who decided our mast was the perfect perch. With no shops in Chagos and having left the Maldives weeks earlier, we were stretching provisions into week four. Fresh food was running low — until the ocean delivered. As we crossed the shallow banks approaching Seychelles, the hand reels came alive. Different species, one after another, lifting morale and reminding us why we love this life. After seven days offshore, land finally rose on the horizon. This episode, we explore one of the most remote and restricted places on Earth: Chagos. Located in the middle of the Indian Ocean, the Chagos Archipelago is a chain of coral atolls few people will ever visit. With no towns, no resorts, and no permanent residents, these islands feel almost untouched — both above and below the surface. After securing a permit and sailing days across open ocean, we dropped anchor inside Salomon Atoll. What we found was extraordinary. Crystal-clear lagoons, thriving coral reefs, and an abundance of marine life unlike anything we’ve seen before. Even the Chagos clownfish, found nowhere else on Earth, thrives here within one of the largest marine protected areas in the Indian Ocean. But Chagos is more than just a remote paradise. For generations, the Chagossian people lived on these islands, building communities around the coconut plantations and surrounding reefs. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, they were forced to leave their homeland. Today, the islands remain largely uninhabited — quiet, beautiful, and layered with history. In this episode, we search for unridden waves, explore abandoned settlements, dive some of the healthiest reefs in the world, and reflect on what it means to visit a place like this as a sailing family. Our time in the Maldives is coming to an end, and before heading even further into the Indian Ocean, we make one final stop at the southernmost atoll — Addu. In this episode, we explore a part of the Maldives that feels completely different to anywhere else we’ve been. From empty surf breaks and motorbike rides, to last-minute repairs, and serious provisioning, it’s all about getting ready for what comes next. With Chagos on the horizon, we load up like we did for our Pacific crossing, knowing it could be weeks before we see proper shops again. After organising permits, planning our timing, and preparing the boat, it’s finally time to leave the Maldives behind and sail toward one of the most remote places on Earth. We didn’t realise how close we were… until it was almost too late. In this episode of Sailing with Six, we make our way through the remote southern atolls of the Maldives in search of a place we’d heard incredible things about — Five Islands. With limited information on anchorages, broken gear along the way, and more problem-solving than sailing at times, getting there was anything but straightforward. From fixing our watermaker and electric winch, to creating our own anchorage in unfamiliar waters, this journey pushed both us and our boat. And then, an unexpected storm rolled through. With a sudden wind shift, building seas, and very little protection, we found ourselves just metres from the reef — fighting to keep our home safe in conditions even the locals hadn’t expected. Despite the challenges, Five Islands gave us some of our most beautiful days in the Maldives — and one of our scariest nights. It’s a place we’ll never forget. After an invitation we couldn’t refuse, we spend 24 hours at Kandooma Surf Resort, getting a glimpse of how most people experience the Maldives… with private bungalows, incredible food, and a level of comfort that feels worlds away from life on a sailboat. But before long, we’re back to what we know best — sailing south through the atolls, chasing waves, exploring remote islands, collecting coconuts, and anchoring in some of the most beautiful places we’ve ever seen. From ice baths and endless buffets… to hermit crabs, palm trees, and quiet anchorages… this episode is all about contrast, perspective, and the lifestyle we’ve chosen. The Maldives is made up of nearly 1,200 islands, with only a small number home to resorts and local communities — and seeing both sides so closely together really made us stop and think.
