For weeks, Cape Town had been all about fixing the boat, chasing paperwork, and getting ready for the next leg of our journey. But once the biggest jobs were finally behind us, we realised we'd barely scratched the surface of one of the most beautiful cities we'd ever seen — so we decided to get amongst it. This episode takes us up the winding road to Chapmans Peak on a 15km run with friends, into the icy water for a surf at Llandudno, and up Lion's Head for one of the best views of Cape Town we've found yet. After driving five and a half hours from Hout Bay to George to collect our decision in person, we got news we weren't expecting — and had to figure out how to pivot fast. We turned a stressful day into an opportunity, joining a half marathon and 10K we'd signed up for on a whim (Kris and Bella tackling the 21km, Finn and Shona the 10km, Archie and Pippi in the kids' race). Back in Hout Bay, we regrouped, tried to lodge our appeal at VFS in Cape Town, and then let this incredible city remind us why we've fought so hard to stay — culminating in a hike up Table Mountain with friends, taking in one of the most spectacular views of our entire circumnavigation. Before we could leave South Africa behind for good, Happy Days needed to be ready for everything the Atlantic could throw at her. What followed was days of running rigging failures, 50-knot winds in the marina, and a job list that seemed to grow faster than we could tick it off. This episode we're based in Hout Bay, just outside Cape Town — picking up a hire car (the hard way), chasing a freezing surf session at Noordhoek Beach, and working through a full running rigging overhaul on our Leopard 46 catamaran, Happy Days I. When our spinnaker halyard job goes wrong late in the day, we learn the hard way when it's time to stop and try again tomorrow. After soaking up our final days exploring the beautiful Knysna Lagoon and sneaking in one last family surf at Victoria Bay, it was finally time to cross the infamous Knysna Heads and continue our journey around the bottom of Africa. With strong winds, breaking waves and a narrow channel between towering cliffs, leaving proved far more challenging than arriving. But the biggest lesson of the passage was still to come… A simple mistake after dropping our spinnaker saw one of our own lines disappear beneath the boat and wrap itself around the propeller in the middle of the night, forcing Kris into the freezing water to sort it out before we could continue. As we rounded Cape Agulhas, passed the Cape of Good Hope and watched whales escort us toward Cape Town, we were reminded once again that offshore sailing has a way of rewarding patience, preparation… and occasionally humbling you when you least expect it. Finally, after another unforgettable passage, we arrive beneath the towering cliffs of Hout Bay—one of the most spectacular harbours we’ve ever sailed into. With just 72 hours left on our South African visas, we thought paperwork would be the hardest part of our week. We were wrong. This episode follows our last few days in Knysna as we race to sort a visa extension before our time runs out — including a wrong turn, an unexpected phone call, and the very real possibility of being forced to leave South Africa, and Happy Days, behind. Once we're finally free to breathe, we take our family and a car loaded with surfboards east to Jeffreys Bay for some of the best surf we've found on this coast — and an encounter none of us saw coming. After crossing the Mozambique Channel, we arrive in South Africa and receive a warm welcome in Richards Bay from the local cruising community. After exploring and surfing Madagascar, we thought we were finally ready to leave. We had a weather window, a plan, and our sights set on South Africa. But before we could cross the Mozambique Channel, we first had to convince the local authorities to let us go. What should have been a routine checkout quickly turned into one of the most frustrating experiences we've encountered during our years of sailing around the world. After finally arriving in northern Madagascar, we thought we’d found the perfect place to slow down. Crystal clear water, tiny fishing villages, remote islands and one of the most beautiful anchorages we’ve seen in a long time. But almost as soon as we arrived, a weather window opened to head further south… toward a far less travelled part of Madagascar and a rumour we couldn’t stop thinking about. The problem was… getting there meant leaving paradise almost immediately and committing to another five days at sea. With very little reliable information, constantly shifting coastal winds and the uncertainty that comes with chasing something you’re not even sure exists… we had to decide whether it was really worth it. We’ve sailed over halfway around the world as a family of six… but this passage felt different. After returning to our boat in Tanzania following a South African surf trip, it was time to prepare Happy Days for another major offshore passage. Provisioning, repairs, fuel, currents, weather routing… and a difficult decision about how we wanted to move through one of the more politically unstable stretches of our circumnavigation. As we sailed south past Mafia Island, the Comoros and toward the Mozambique Channel, we found ourselves making strategic decisions that had little to do with sailing performance — including whether or not we should continue broadcasting our position at sea. This episode is a real look at offshore passagemaking as a family: navigating changing conditions, reading the bigger picture, balancing safety with adventure, and continuing the journey toward Madagascar. We took a break from full-time boat life to explore South Africa in a completely different way — chasing waves, meeting incredible people, and stepping into our first ever surf competition. From the coastline of Jeffreys Bay to the rugged cliffs of Gansbaai and the energy of Cape Town, this became one of the most memorable parts of our journey so far. ⸻ For a few weeks, we swapped life on the water for the open road — trading anchorages for road trips, surf sessions, and new experiences as a family. We thought this would be a quick fix… it wasn’t. After arriving in Dar es Salaam, we set out to tick off a list of jobs before leaving the boat behind at anchor. One of the biggest? Fixing our anchor chain and windlass issue. We replaced the motor. We tried a deep water drop. We even swapped the chain ends. And still… nothing worked. What followed was a mix of problem-solving, frustration, a bit of trial and error… and eventually stepping away to reset before diving back in. With the boat prepped as best we could, we locked everything down—taking extra precautions before leaving her unattended—and headed off on a surf trip we’ve been looking forward to for a long time. Next stop: airport, road trip… and new waves.

After leaving Kendwa, we make our way down to Stone Town in Zanzibar — trading quiet anchorages for busy streets, markets, and the reality of life behind the scenes. From provisioning and paperwork to tackling a watermaker issue, this is the part of the journey that keeps everything moving. But just a short distance away, we stumble across something special… Pange Island sandbank — an unexpected kiting and wingfoiling spot that quickly becomes a favourite. In this episode, we share the balance that makes this life work — the effort it takes to keep things running, and the moments that remind us why we do it.
