Sri Lanka completely surprised us. 🌴🌊 What started as a practical stop on our Indian Ocean sailing route quickly turned into one of the most memorable parts of our journey. From surfing warm waves along the south coast to wandering the historic streets of Galle Fort, this country welcomed us in ways we didn’t expect. In this episode of Sailing with Six, we explore Sri Lanka both on land and at sea — surfing at spots like Ahangama and Madiha, riding tuk-tuks through busy streets, tasting local food, and spending a full day inside Galle Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage site shaped by Portuguese, Dutch, and British history. Back at the marina in Galle Harbour, we settle into a very different kind of marina experience. It’s not perfect — but it’s safe, friendly, and practical, giving us the space we needed to reset. The kids even take the opportunity to repair and repaint their well-used surfboards, turning the grassy marina surrounds into a temporary workshop. We also lend a hand to another yacht passing through on their way to the Mediterranean, reminding us once again how supportive the sailing community can be. Season 5 begins! After months of preparation, we’re finally turning west and starting our Indian Ocean adventure. We had heard whispers of this place called Railay Beach — and it turned out to be even better than we imagined. This week didn’t exactly go the way we planned. 😅 What started as a normal few days of ticking off boat jobs in Phuket turned into a hospital visit after Archie had a heavy landing while wing foiling. The X-ray confirmed a couple of broken bones… and if that wasn’t enough, the boat decided to throw us a handful of surprises too. From clutch cone issues to watermaker failures, this was one of those curveball weeks where everything popped up at once. We also talk openly about how we handle medical care abroad without medical insurance — why we self-insure, what care looks like in Thailand, and how we navigate the unexpected while living full-time on our boat with four kids. After months of sailing through tropical heat, our family traded turquoise seas for snow-capped peaks. This rare adventure took us from Langkawi, through Singapore and Sydney, all the way to New Zealand — where we swapped bikinis for beanies and helped Minnie and Pa take their first sail on their own catamaran before heading south to Mount Ruapehu for our first time in the snow. Contrary to popular belief, living on a sailboat isn’t one long holiday. Running an ocean-going home means constant planning — weather, water, safety, and food.
