After crossing the Mozambique Channel, we arrive in South Africa and receive a warm welcome in Richards Bay from the local cruising community. With Happy Days safely tied up in the marina, we take the opportunity to catch up on boat jobs, celebrate Bella’s 16th birthday, explore the local area and enjoy a few of the comforts we’d been missing. But this stop turns out to be far more than just a chance to reset. Leaving the boat behind, we head off on an unforgettable African safari. From hippos wandering the streets of St Lucia after dark to close encounters with rhinos, elephants, giraffes and more, this adventure quickly becomes one of the highlights of our time in Africa. A huge thank you to Heritage Tours for helping make this incredible experience possible. Book your own Safari here https://www.heritagetoursandsafaris.com/ ————— ⛵ Welcome aboard Sailing with Six! After exploring and surfing Madagascar, we thought we were finally ready to leave. We had a weather window, a plan, and our sights set on South Africa. But before we could cross the Mozambique Channel, we first had to convince the local authorities to let us go. What should have been a routine checkout quickly turned into one of the most frustrating experiences we've encountered during our years of sailing around the world. With tensions rising, a weather window closing, and the Mozambique Channel waiting for us on the other side, all we wanted was our paperwork and a clear path south. Once underway, we faced one of the most challenging stretches of water in the world as we sailed from Madagascar towards Richards Bay, South Africa aboard our Leopard 46 catamaran, Happy Days. Join our family of six as we navigate bureaucracy, weather routing, offshore sailing, and life at sea while continuing our circumnavigation of the globe. ⛵ Boat: Leopard 46 Catamaran 🌏 Route: Madagascar → Mozambique Channel → Richards Bay, South Africa

We sailed to one of the most remote corners of Madagascar in search of empty waves—and discovered that finding them was only part of the adventure. From navigating uncertain anchorages and relentless winds to exploring remote villages, dealing with a military lockdown in town, and troubleshooting boat repairs far from help, this stop reminded us that the best adventures often require the most effort. 🌊 Join Our Sailing Family Adventure! After finally arriving in northern Madagascar, we thought we’d found the perfect place to slow down. Crystal clear water, tiny fishing villages, remote islands and one of the most beautiful anchorages we’ve seen in a long time. But almost as soon as we arrived, a weather window opened to head further south… toward a far less travelled part of Madagascar and a rumour we couldn’t stop thinking about. The problem was… getting there meant leaving paradise almost immediately and committing to another five days at sea. With very little reliable information, constantly shifting coastal winds and the uncertainty that comes with chasing something you’re not even sure exists… we had to decide whether it was really worth it. In this episode we explore Nosy Iranja, check in to Madagascar, and make one of the toughest calls cruisers face so often — stay somewhere beautiful… or keep moving in search of what’s next. Join us as we continue sailing down the wild west coast of Madagascar aboard our Leopard 46 catamaran, Happy Days. ........ 🌊 Join Our Sailing Family Adventure! We’ve sailed over halfway around the world as a family of six… but this passage felt different. After returning to our boat in Tanzania following a South African surf trip, it was time to prepare Happy Days for another major offshore passage. Provisioning, repairs, fuel, currents, weather routing… and a difficult decision about how we wanted to move through one of the more politically unstable stretches of our circumnavigation. As we sailed south past Mafia Island, the Comoros and toward the Mozambique Channel, we found ourselves making strategic decisions that had little to do with sailing performance — including whether or not we should continue broadcasting our position at sea. This episode is a real look at offshore passagemaking as a family: navigating changing conditions, reading the bigger picture, balancing safety with adventure, and continuing the journey toward Madagascar. We took a break from full-time boat life to explore South Africa in a completely different way — chasing waves, meeting incredible people, and stepping into our first ever surf competition. From the coastline of Jeffreys Bay to the rugged cliffs of Gansbaai and the energy of Cape Town, this became one of the most memorable parts of our journey so far. ⸻ For a few weeks, we swapped life on the water for the open road — trading anchorages for road trips, surf sessions, and new experiences as a family. Along the way, we: * Surfed the world-famous right-handers of JBay * Adjusted (quickly!) to freezing water temperatures * Met some of the most welcoming people we’ve come across * Explored hidden gems like the Drip Cave and Klipgat Caves * And watched Bella & Archie take on their first surf competition It wasn’t just about the waves — it was about slowing down, seeing a new side of South Africa, and experiencing life at a different pace. ⸻ If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to step away from one way of life and try something completely different… this one’s for you. ⸻ 🌊 Join Our Sailing Family Adventure! We thought this would be a quick fix… it wasn’t. After arriving in Dar es Salaam, we set out to tick off a list of jobs before leaving the boat behind at anchor. One of the biggest? Fixing our anchor chain and windlass issue. We replaced the motor. We tried a deep water drop. We even swapped the chain ends. And still… nothing worked. What followed was a mix of problem-solving, frustration, a bit of trial and error… and eventually stepping away to reset before diving back in. With the boat prepped as best we could, we locked everything down—taking extra precautions before leaving her unattended—and headed off on a surf trip we’ve been looking forward to for a long time. Next stop: airport, road trip… and new waves.

It’s not always easy… but this is what makes it worth it. After leaving Kendwa, we make our way down to Stone Town in Zanzibar — trading quiet anchorages for busy streets, markets, and the reality of life behind the scenes. From provisioning and paperwork to tackling a watermaker issue, this is the part of the journey that keeps everything moving. But just a short distance away, we stumble across something special… Pange Island sandbank — an unexpected kiting and wingfoiling spot that quickly becomes a favourite. In this episode, we share the balance that makes this life work — the effort it takes to keep things running, and the moments that remind us why we do it. From the chaos of Stone Town to the freedom of life on the water, this is what life between the highlights really looks like. ⸻ ⛵ In this episode: • Sailing down the coast of Zanzibar • Exploring Stone Town and local markets • Boat life admin and clearing procedures • Fixing our watermaker (a mission-critical job!) • Discovering Pange Island sandbank • Kitesurfing & wingfoiling in Zanzibar • Pippi learning new kiting skills ⸻ 🙌 Thanks for being here If you enjoyed this episode, make sure you’re subscribed so you don’t miss what’s coming next. ⸻ 🌊 Join Our Sailing Family Adventure! After a tough offshore passage, we arrive in Tanzania for our first real taste of Africa… and it wasn’t quite what we expected. Our journey begins in Tanga, a quiet coastal town where we reset after days at sea, navigate the full boat check-in process, and explore the incredible Amboni Caves — the largest limestone cave system in East Africa. From there, we sail south to Zanzibar, where everything shifts. More people, more movement… and a completely different energy. From busy beaches and traditional dhow boats to the contrast between tourism and local life, this stop gave us a glimpse into a side of Africa that’s hard to put into words. Along the way, we share the realities of arriving in a new country by boat, a bit of sailing tradition, and the moments in between that make this lifestyle so unique. This is what our first days in Africa really looked like. ⸻ ⛵ In this episode: • Sailing into Tanzania • Clearing into Tanga (immigration, customs & port health) • Exploring the Amboni Caves • Life onboard after a rough passage • Sailing to Zanzibar • First impressions of Zanzibar • Local culture, tourism & daily life • A unique sailing tradition moment ⸻ 🌊 Join Our Sailing Family Adventure! This wasn’t a storm… but it might have been one of the most uncomfortable passages we’ve had. Sailing from Seychelles to Tanzania, we thought we’d timed the weather well. A lighter forecast, a manageable window… and a straightforward run across the Indian Ocean. But out here, it’s not always the wind that defines a passage. Short period swell, confused seas, and constant motion turned this into a relentless few days onboard. The kind of passage that doesn’t look dramatic… but slowly wears you down, hour by hour. From hobby horsing over waves to being thrown sideways, reefing down to stay in control, and troubleshooting ongoing boat issues along the way — this is what offshore sailing really looks like. No filters. No shortcuts. Just real life at sea. After days of discomfort, we make landfall in Tanga, Tanzania, marking the start of a whole new chapter for our family — exploring mainland Africa. ⸻ ⚓️ In this episode: • Sailing the Indian Ocean (Seychelles → Tanzania) • Understanding short period swell & sea state • Life onboard during a tough passage • Reefing and sail management in uncomfortable conditions • Anchor chain troubleshooting at sea • Strategic stop near Zanzibar due to night fishing activity • Arrival in Tanga, Tanzania ⸻ 🌊 Join Our Sailing Family Adventure! After exploring the outer islands of the Seychelles, we returned to Mahé with a growing list of things that needed attention onboard. From a fridge that wasn’t staying cold to Starlink dropping out and a few other boat jobs piling up, it was time to regroup and find some solutions. But living this life in remote places doesn’t always make things easy… so we made the call to send Dad on a whirlwind trip across the world — collecting a passport, sourcing spare parts, and catching up with family along the way. That meant the rest of us stayed behind to keep things running… with Bella stepping up and taking the helm for the week. While Dad raced between flights, we slowed things down a little — exploring more of Mahé, visiting a beautiful spice garden with friends, and continuing life aboard as a family. Eventually, with everyone reunited and a few key problems solved, we were ready to move forward once again. This is what it really looks like behind the scenes of sailing around the world as a family — problem solving, teamwork, and doing whatever it takes to keep the journey going. 🌊 Join Our Sailing Family Adventure! In this episode we slow down and enjoy island life in the Seychelles — exploring Curieuse Island, meeting giant tortoises, and riding bikes all over the beautiful island of La Digue with friends. The Seychelles was an important stop on our Indian Ocean crossing. For sailors heading west, it’s one of the last places to pause before continuing toward Africa and the infamous Mozambique Channel. While we wait for the weather to change, we’re making the most of this incredible place. From searching for giant tortoises on Curieuse Island, to turning into a full blown bike gang on La Digue, this week is all about enjoying the freedom of island life, spending time with friends, and exploring some of the most beautiful islands in the Indian Ocean. After more than 1000 nautical miles across the Indian Ocean, we finally arrived in the Seychelles — waking up to towering green mountains after months of sailing through the low coral atolls of the Maldives and Chagos. But as every cruiser knows… days don’t always go to plan. Before we could properly explore the island, our generator decided to cause some trouble, forcing a quick repair and a reminder that flexibility is part of life at sea. Once things were running again we were finally able to get out and experience some island life in the Seychelles — including something a little unexpected… With the kids getting older it felt like the perfect opportunity for a new milestone: driving lessons. Meanwhile, Finn had his own adventure ahead when he joined a local sport fishing tournament, heading out before midnight to see what the Indian Ocean had in store. Life certainly didn’t slow down when we arrived in the Seychelles. 🌊 Join Our Sailing Family Adventure! We’re the Fothergills – a family of six living full-time aboard our catamaran, Happy Days. After our visit to remote Chagos, it was time to set sail once again. In this episode, we make the 1,000 nautical mile passage from Chagos to our first African country — Seychelles. With a band of storms sweeping across the Indian Ocean, we chose a lighter wind route just north of the system. The result? A comfortable… but slow seven days at sea. Offshore life quickly settles into rhythm — sail changes, night watches under a full moon, and even a rather messy stowaway who decided our mast was the perfect perch. With no shops in Chagos and having left the Maldives weeks earlier, we were stretching provisions into week four. Fresh food was running low — until the ocean delivered. As we crossed the shallow banks approaching Seychelles, the hand reels came alive. Different species, one after another, lifting morale and reminding us why we love this life. After seven days offshore, land finally rose on the horizon. Welcome to Seychelles. ⛵ If you enjoy following our family’s journey around the world by sailboat, consider subscribing and sailing along with us.
