In this episode we slow down and enjoy island life in the Seychelles — exploring Curieuse Island, meeting giant tortoises, and riding bikes all over the beautiful island of La Digue with friends. The Seychelles was an important stop on our Indian Ocean crossing. For sailors heading west, it’s one of the last places to pause before continuing toward Africa and the infamous Mozambique Channel. While we wait for the weather to change, we’re making the most of this incredible place. From searching for giant tortoises on Curieuse Island, to turning into a full blown bike gang on La Digue, this week is all about enjoying the freedom of island life, spending time with friends, and exploring some of the most beautiful islands in the Indian Ocean. Join us as we experience the slower pace of life in the Seychelles before preparing our boat for the next big leg of our circumnavigation. 🌊 Join Our Sailing Family Adventure! After more than 1000 nautical miles across the Indian Ocean, we finally arrived in the Seychelles — waking up to towering green mountains after months of sailing through the low coral atolls of the Maldives and Chagos. But as every cruiser knows… days don’t always go to plan. Before we could properly explore the island, our generator decided to cause some trouble, forcing a quick repair and a reminder that flexibility is part of life at sea. Once things were running again we were finally able to get out and experience some island life in the Seychelles — including something a little unexpected… With the kids getting older it felt like the perfect opportunity for a new milestone: driving lessons. Meanwhile, Finn had his own adventure ahead when he joined a local sport fishing tournament, heading out before midnight to see what the Indian Ocean had in store. Life certainly didn’t slow down when we arrived in the Seychelles. 🌊 Join Our Sailing Family Adventure! We’re the Fothergills – a family of six living full-time aboard our catamaran, Happy Days. After our visit to remote Chagos, it was time to set sail once again. In this episode, we make the 1,000 nautical mile passage from Chagos to our first African country — Seychelles. With a band of storms sweeping across the Indian Ocean, we chose a lighter wind route just north of the system. The result? A comfortable… but slow seven days at sea. Offshore life quickly settles into rhythm — sail changes, night watches under a full moon, and even a rather messy stowaway who decided our mast was the perfect perch. With no shops in Chagos and having left the Maldives weeks earlier, we were stretching provisions into week four. Fresh food was running low — until the ocean delivered. As we crossed the shallow banks approaching Seychelles, the hand reels came alive. Different species, one after another, lifting morale and reminding us why we love this life. After seven days offshore, land finally rose on the horizon. Welcome to Seychelles. ⛵ If you enjoy following our family’s journey around the world by sailboat, consider subscribing and sailing along with us. This episode, we explore one of the most remote and restricted places on Earth: Chagos. Located in the middle of the Indian Ocean, the Chagos Archipelago is a chain of coral atolls few people will ever visit. With no towns, no resorts, and no permanent residents, these islands feel almost untouched — both above and below the surface. After securing a permit and sailing days across open ocean, we dropped anchor inside Salomon Atoll. What we found was extraordinary. Crystal-clear lagoons, thriving coral reefs, and an abundance of marine life unlike anything we’ve seen before. Even the Chagos clownfish, found nowhere else on Earth, thrives here within one of the largest marine protected areas in the Indian Ocean. But Chagos is more than just a remote paradise. For generations, the Chagossian people lived on these islands, building communities around the coconut plantations and surrounding reefs. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, they were forced to leave their homeland. Today, the islands remain largely uninhabited — quiet, beautiful, and layered with history. In this episode, we search for unridden waves, explore abandoned settlements, dive some of the healthiest reefs in the world, and reflect on what it means to visit a place like this as a sailing family. This is Chagos — a paradise with a past. 🌊 Join Our Sailing Family Adventure! We’re the Fothergills – a family of six living full-time aboard our catamaran, Happy Days. Our time in the Maldives is coming to an end, and before heading even further into the Indian Ocean, we make one final stop at the southernmost atoll — Addu. In this episode, we explore a part of the Maldives that feels completely different to anywhere else we’ve been. From empty surf breaks and motorbike rides, to last-minute repairs, and serious provisioning, it’s all about getting ready for what comes next. With Chagos on the horizon, we load up like we did for our Pacific crossing, knowing it could be weeks before we see proper shops again. After organising permits, planning our timing, and preparing the boat, it’s finally time to leave the Maldives behind and sail toward one of the most remote places on Earth. Join us as we continue across the Indian Ocean — sailing from the Maldives to Chagos and into the unknown. ⸻ 🌊 Join Our Sailing Family Adventure! We didn’t realise how close we were… until it was almost too late. In this episode of Sailing with Six, we make our way through the remote southern atolls of the Maldives in search of a place we’d heard incredible things about — Five Islands. With limited information on anchorages, broken gear along the way, and more problem-solving than sailing at times, getting there was anything but straightforward. From fixing our watermaker and electric winch, to creating our own anchorage in unfamiliar waters, this journey pushed both us and our boat. And then, an unexpected storm rolled through. With a sudden wind shift, building seas, and very little protection, we found ourselves just metres from the reef — fighting to keep our home safe in conditions even the locals hadn’t expected. Despite the challenges, Five Islands gave us some of our most beautiful days in the Maldives — and one of our scariest nights. It’s a place we’ll never forget. After an invitation we couldn’t refuse, we spend 24 hours at Kandooma Surf Resort, getting a glimpse of how most people experience the Maldives… with private bungalows, incredible food, and a level of comfort that feels worlds away from life on a sailboat. But before long, we’re back to what we know best — sailing south through the atolls, chasing waves, exploring remote islands, collecting coconuts, and anchoring in some of the most beautiful places we’ve ever seen. From ice baths and endless buffets… to hermit crabs, palm trees, and quiet anchorages… this episode is all about contrast, perspective, and the lifestyle we’ve chosen. The Maldives is made up of nearly 1,200 islands, with only a small number home to resorts and local communities — and seeing both sides so closely together really made us stop and think. There’s a time and place for luxury travel. And then there’s life at sea. So… what would you choose? 👍 Like this episode if you enjoyed it 💬 Let us know in the comments — which would you choose? What does life in the Maldives really look like when you’re sailing full-time? In this episode of Sailing with Six, we experience a side of the Maldives that doesn’t always match the postcard images — from spending a night at a surprisingly quiet Crossroads Marina, to navigating the busy streets of Malé, and finally slowing right down at anchor off the local island of Ghuli. This part of the Maldives is known for world-class surf, but when we arrived, the ocean was flat. With a lull in the swell, we settled into island life, caught up on boat jobs, and practiced patience — trusting the forecast and waiting for the ocean to deliver. And when it finally did… it reminded us why some moments are worth waiting for. 🌊 In this episode: • Visiting one of the few marinas in the Maldives • Dinghying into Malé to run errands • Navigating narrow reef cuts to a protected anchorage • Life at anchor on a local island • Waiting for swell… and scoring epic surf If you enjoy honest sailing life, slow travel, family cruising, and the reality behind the dream, we’re glad you’re here. 🌊 Join Our Sailing Family Adventure! When we decided to come to the Maldives it was for the surf — a place we’ve been dreaming about for a long time. Our next stop though wasn’t a surf break or a resort… but an island with an abandoned luxury resort, slowly being reclaimed by nature. From there, we explored above and below the water, sailed on past seaplanes landing in crystal-clear lagoons, and eventually found our first waves in the Maldives — something we’d heard so much about and were incredibly excited to experience. What followed was a mix of sketchy moments in the surf, a building storm, and finally months-worth of wind lining up perfectly for kite surfing and wing foiling. This episode is a reminder of why we love this life — adapting to whatever the ocean throws at us, and discovering places that are far from the postcards. 🌊 Join Our Sailing Family Adventure! Places like this actually exist… and after days crossing the Indian Ocean, we finally found ourselves here. Not long after leaving Sri Lanka, this passage didn’t go exactly to plan. An unexpected encounter at sea and an engine issue reminded us that out here, you stay calm, keep moving, and deal with things one step at a time. After days of blue in every direction, the Maldives appeared — and everything slowed down. We explored crystal-clear lagoons, anchored carefully over sand to protect the reef, and spent days snorkelling and free diving through an underwater world full of life. This episode is about the contrast — the hustle of Sri Lanka, the rhythm of a long ocean passage, and the reward waiting on the other side. A reminder that some of the most incredible places on Earth can’t be rushed… but they’re worth every mile. ⛵ In this episode: • Sailing from Sri Lanka across the Indian Ocean • An unexpected fishing boat encounter at sea • Dealing with an engine issue mid-passage • Arriving in the northern Maldives (Uligan) • Exploring reef anchorages and stunning blue lagoons • Snorkelling and free diving in crystal-clear water If you enjoyed this episode and want to keep exploring places like this with us, make sure you’re subscribed and come along for more underwater adventures. ⸻ 🌊 Join Our Sailing Family Adventure! Sri Lanka completely surprised us. 🌴🌊 What started as a practical stop on our Indian Ocean sailing route quickly turned into one of the most memorable parts of our journey. From surfing warm waves along the south coast to wandering the historic streets of Galle Fort, this country welcomed us in ways we didn’t expect. In this episode of Sailing with Six, we explore Sri Lanka both on land and at sea — surfing at spots like Ahangama and Madiha, riding tuk-tuks through busy streets, tasting local food, and spending a full day inside Galle Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage site shaped by Portuguese, Dutch, and British history. Back at the marina in Galle Harbour, we settle into a very different kind of marina experience. It’s not perfect — but it’s safe, friendly, and practical, giving us the space we needed to reset. The kids even take the opportunity to repair and repaint their well-used surfboards, turning the grassy marina surrounds into a temporary workshop. We also lend a hand to another yacht passing through on their way to the Mediterranean, reminding us once again how supportive the sailing community can be. Sri Lanka turned out to be a stop we’re genuinely stoked we made — and now, refreshed and grateful, we’re preparing to take on the next stretch of the Indian Ocean. 👉 If you’d like to support our journey and see behind-the-scenes updates, early releases, and extra content, join us on Patreon. Season 5 begins! After months of preparation, we’re finally turning west and starting our Indian Ocean adventure. Our first passage is a big one — 1,100 nautical miles from Thailand to Sri Lanka, our first multi-day sail in over a year. The ocean gave us gentle winds, rolling blue swells, and time to fall back into the rhythm of night watches… until things got interesting. As we approached the Andaman Islands and prepared to transit the Sombrero Channel, we were intercepted and hailed by an Indian warship over VHF. From calm seas to heart-rate rising moments, and then onwards toward the vibrant coastline of Sri Lanka, this passage is the beginning of something huge — a brand new season of adventure, challenge, and discovery. Come aboard. Season 5 starts now. 🌏⛵ 🌊 Join Our Sailing Family Adventure! We’re the Fothergills – a family of six living full-time aboard our catamaran, Happy Days.
