We depart Sandakan heading further east, enjoying a beautiful sail and even landing a delicious Spanish mackerel along the way before anchoring overnight behind Tambisan Island. Setting off early the next morning, we round the easternmost tip of Borneo and pass through one of the most sensitive regions, close to the Philippines. Under the watchful eye of ESSCOM, who escort us and ensure our safety, we continue along the eastern peninsula with confidence. Arriving in Lahad Datu, we refuel using our fuel bladders for the first time and stock up at the well-supplied local markets. As we depart, we sail past the anchored officials with sirens sounding and horns blasting—a lively send-off—before making a short day sail to W Bay. This leg comes with some very special guests onboard. The lovely ladies from Tourism Malaysia join us on No Regrets, drawing plenty of curious attention from nearby boats eager to come in for a closer look! Along the way, we introduce them to a true Australian classic—Vegemite. To our surprise, they seemed to enjoy it… or at least did a very convincing job of making us believe they did! At W Bay, we’re welcomed with another fantastic rally dinner and genuine local hospitality. We spend the next few days diving some of the best coral and fish life we’ve seen in Malaysia so far, all in crystal-clear water. We wrap up this incredible stretch sailing past the Blue Hole, capturing some stunning drone footage, before arriving at Gading Gading—where, once again, we’re greeted with warm smiles and another memorable rally dinner. WHO ARE WE? Hey there! We’re Chris and Jo, an ordinary Aussie couple living our extraordinary dream aboard our Seawind 1260 since January 2019 and now we continue from 2024 aboard our new 1370! Our adventure began with an unforgettable journey down the east coast of Australia, followed by a sail to the stunning New Caledonia. In 2020, we continued our exploration further north, and by 2021 and 2022, we circumnavigated Australia, discovering breathtaking locations along the way. Having previously owned fishing and water-skiing boats, our passion for sailing deepened after crewing in South Australia, leading us to make the leap into full-time living at sea. We hope to inspire you, just as we were inspired by other YouTube channels, to chase your dreams and explore the wonders of this beautiful world. We completed our last-minute provisioning in Sandakan with new crew Geoff and Anne before setting off to negotiate the shallow shoals and enter the Kinabatangan River. After a leisurely motor upstream to the midway stopping point at the big U-bend, we took the tender into a side lagoon for a true Borneo jungle adventure. That evening, all the rally boats gathered for a celebratory drink. Unfortunately, we were interrupted by the blast of a tug’s horn as it came downriver towing a huge barge. With no time to waste, we leapt into the tender and raced to the first upstream boat, dropping two people aboard to get it started and out of the way. I immediately spun the tender around and pushed with everything it had, forcing the yacht sideways just enough to narrowly clear the oncoming barge. We then raced downriver, pushing each yacht in turn to clear a path. There simply wasn’t time for anyone to lift anchor and move under their own power. Thankfully, every yacht in the barge’s path was shifted to safety. Continuing upriver, we made it as far as the powerlines at Sukau, 36 nautical miles inland, and enjoyed a couple of wildlife tours in search of proboscis monkeys, orangutans, hornbills, and—if we were lucky—a pygmy elephant. On the return journey, we once again negotiated shallow shoals and strong currents before making our way back out, covering a total of 86 nautical miles along the river. WHO ARE WE? Hey there! We leave Kota Kinabalu and sail around the northern tip of Borneo, stopping at several spectacular bays along the way and enjoying another wonderful rally dinner at Usukan Cove. Continuing on to Kudat, we attempt to anchor and med-moor but struggle to get the anchor to set in the tricky conditions. Thankfully several rally boats come to our rescue, lending a hand and reminding us once again how supportive the cruising community can be. The rally tour bus then takes us on a land adventure to the Tip of Borneo, where the South China Sea and Sulu Sea meet. Along the way we visit a local homestay and a fascinating honeybee farm. From Kudat we carefully navigate through a maze of reefs to reach Turtle Islands Park. Normally off limits to boats, the Sail Malaysia Rally receives special permission to visit this protected sanctuary. That evening we’re fortunate enough to witness an incredible moment — a female turtle coming ashore to lay her eggs — and learn about the conservation efforts helping ensure the hatchlings have the best possible chance of survival. Leaving the islands behind, we sail to Sandakan where we refuel No Regrets II at the fuel barge and fill our new additional fuel bladders for the journey ahead. While in Sandakan we visit the remarkable Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre and the nearby Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre, getting an unforgettable close look at these endangered animals. Finally, Geoff and Anne arrive to join us as new crew for the next leg of our adventure. WHO ARE WE? Hey there! After checking into Kota Kinabalu, we dive into a few unforgettable adventures — white water rafting through jungle rapids, witnessing incredible fireflies illuminate the riverbanks at night, and soaring high above the coastline while parasailing. It’s the perfect send-off before Emma heads home. We then sail to Dalit Bay, carefully navigating a shallow sandbar in a strong tidal river before anchoring securely. But the drama isn’t over. Another boat fails to negotiate the powerful current and drifts straight into us while we’re at anchor, slamming into our bow and causing damage. We’re forced to carry out temporary repairs to keep No Regrets II strong and watertight. Despite the unexpected collision, we finish on a high note with a wonderful cultural show and rally dinner as part of the Sail Malaysia Rally, celebrating another eventful chapter of the journey. Adventure, adrenaline, and proof that even when you’re safely at anchor… you’re never completely out of danger. We leave Miri and sail to Pulau Tiga, better known as Survivor Island. Famous for its bubbling mud volcanoes, we cover ourselves head to toe in cool-to-the-touch, mineral-rich mud. It takes a little encouragement for the girls to get in — but once they do, it turns into an unforgettable (and very messy!) experience. After washing off, we snorkel the vibrant coral reef while park rangers keep watch overhead with a surveillance drone — monitoring the area for the island’s resident crocodile. It definitely adds an edge to the swim! We then hop across to nearby Lovely Paradise Island, where pure white sand and crystal-clear water create a true tropical postcard scene — best admired from the island’s quirky pool table overlooking the beach. Finally, we set sail toward Kota Kinabalu, and manage to hook a fish along the way, rounding out another unforgettable adventure in Malaysian Borneo. We arrive at Miri Marina and before we can even think about exploring, the first job is organising multiple fuel runs to top up several boats with diesel. Soon after, Emma joins us and we head inland to explore the incredible Niah Caves — a fascinating glimpse into Borneo’s ancient past. Setting sail eastward, the calm conditions don’t last. Out of nowhere, a sudden tropical storm hits, with winds jumping from just 6 knots to over 40 in seconds. Thankfully, we manage to get the sails down in time, but our buddy boat isn’t as lucky and suffers some damage in the chaos. We continue on through Brunei, passing the Sultan’s palace and enjoying a beautifully protected anchorage before pushing on toward Labuan. There, we encounter our most polluted anchorage yet. It takes several attempts to set the anchor, repeatedly fouled by plastic rubbish covering the seabed. It’s a sobering reminder of the reality beneath the surface — but Labuan’s duty-free shopping, especially the chocolate, helps soften the experience. In this episode, we go into full detail on the true extent of the lightning strike damage to No Regrets II. We walk through exactly what failed and what had to be replaced, including: CZone switching system Mastervolt power and charging equipment B&G navigation electronics Plus the many incidental systems and devices that were wiped out by the strike We also share which tools and spare parts we had onboard that proved invaluable at the time, and what additional spares we now plan to carry after living through this experience. Finally, we answer many of the common questions and comments we’ve received and talk honestly about the costs involved, revealing just how financially devastating a lightning strike can be. This is a practical, transparent look at what really happens when lightning hits a modern cruising yacht — and what it takes to bring a boat back to life. WHO ARE WE? Hey there! **** FIXED AUDIO AND VIDEO ******* Not sure why but YouTube corrupted our last video upload. This is the same video re-encoded fixing the playback. ************************************** One lightning strike left us with no power, no engines, and 820 miles to get back for repairs. After being struck by lightning while anchored at the remote island of Pulau Panjang in Indonesia, everything changed in an instant. With no electrical systems, no engines, no pumps, no cooking, and no refrigeration, we were forced to manually lift the anchor and begin an 820-nautical-mile journey back to Phuket. Sailing when the weather allowed, we hand-steered day and night through storms, strong currents, and sheer exhaustion. Near the end of the journey, we were towed across the Malacca Strait before finally reaching Port Dickson—our first chance to get No Regrets II running again. This is Part 1 of our journey. In Part 2, failed engine repairs, a narrowly dodged cyclone that destroyed Admiral Marina in Port Dickson, electrical system checks in Penang, and finally a haul-out in Phuket as we face the full extent of the damage. We’re jumping forward to real time because so many of you have been asking what happened to us. On 12th November, while anchored off a tiny remote sand island called Pulau Panjang in Indonesia, No Regrets II was struck by direct lightning to the mast. The strike was devastating — it wiped out almost every electrical system onboard. In an instant, we lost: Navigation and instruments Engines Lighting Low and high voltage power systems Charging systems Communications Essentially everything electrical on the boat This episode is Part 1 of our real-time update series, documenting what we had to do to stabilise the boat, jury-rig critical systems, and begin the long, difficult journey back toward civilisation and eventual repairs. We’re incredibly grateful for the support we’ve received and want to share the reality of dealing with a catastrophic failure while cruising in one of the most remote regions we’ve ever sailed. We depart Kuala Terengganu with an unforgettable farewell, passing back through the drawbridge as crowds line the roadway and local boats escort us out. It’s a heartfelt send-off that perfectly captures the warmth of this incredible city. Heading south, the wind finally arrives — but straight on the nose — turning the sail into a slow and uncomfortable slog. As conditions build, we spot a small sheltered river protected by a brand-new breakwater and decide to slip inside. It proves to be a hidden gem: a perfectly calm, secure anchorage that gives us one of our best night’s sleep in days. At first light, we set off toward Tarempa in the Anambas Islands on an overnight passage. After a long night at sea, dawn brings us into a bustling shipping lane, where we carefully weave between tankers and freighters before making our final approach. Once checked into Indonesia, we’re invited to join the lively E-Festival — parading through town with the locals before a welcome dinner that’s suddenly interrupted by a classic tropical downpour! We finish with a full day exploring Siantan Island, visiting the Grand Mosque, the charming Dusun stilt village, the towering Temburun Waterfall, and the tiny town of Arung. Another episode filled with adventure, warm hospitality, and the vibrant culture of Indonesia’s remote islands. 🌴⚓ Timestamps if you like to Jump Right In: 00:00 Intro 00:32 Leaving Kuala Terengganu 05:20 Sheltering in Kuala Paka 07:48 2nd Reef Jamb 08:27 Heading off to the Anambas Islands 12:45 Clearing in to Terempa 14:07 Guests at the E festival 16:40 Island Tour WHO ARE WE? After dressing No Regrets II with every flag we own, the Jambatan Angkat drawbridge in Kuala Terengganu is opened especially for the Sail Malaysia Rally to enter the marina — a truly spectacular sight! 🚤🎉 With traffic stopped and locals lining the bridge, we felt like royalty sailing through, waving to the crowd as we passed beneath. A quick drone flight captured the amazing views of the drawbridge, marina, and city from above — what a welcome! During our stay in Terengganu, we explored Chinatown, wandered through quiet night markets, and joined the rally for a cultural tour that included: 🌀 Visiting the local markets 🎨 Watching traditional batik dyeing at the NACC Batik Pavilion 🏛️ A tour of the Kuala Terengganu Museum, complete with a welcome lunch, local dance performances, and craft demonstrations Before clearing out of Malaysia at the Sultan Mahmud International Airport, we tackled one last challenge — refuelling No Regrets II by jerry cans from the dock. Always an adventure! 😅 Another unforgettable stop on our Sail Malaysia journey — filled with culture, colour, and an incredible welcome from the people of Terengganu. ❤️⚓ Timestamps if you like to Jump Right In: 00:00 Intro 00:31 Dressing No Regrets II with every flag 01:17 Drone shots 02:53 Bridge Opening 03:57 China Town & Night Markets 06:09 Rally Tour of Terengganu 13:02 Refuelling No Regrets II 15:23 Check out of Malaysia WHO ARE WE? We sail from Kapas Island to Redang Island, where we spend several incredible days surrounded by powdery white sand, turquoise water, and vibrant coral reefs. During our stay, we snorkel in a sandy area reserved for turtle feeding, swimming side by side with majestic sea turtles as they glide gracefully through the crystal-clear water — an unforgettable experience! 🐢💦 We also visit the Chagar Hutang Turtle Sanctuary, where we see first-hand the incredible conservation work being done to protect these endangered creatures. We’re lucky enough to witness tiny hatchlings breaking through the sand to take their first steps toward the sea, and later, a nighttime release of young turtles — truly magical moments that will stay with us forever. 🌙✨ After a few relaxing and inspiring days exploring Redang, we sail back to Kuala Terengganu, anchoring in the basin with the city and bridge beautifully lit at night, ready for the upcoming bridge opening ceremony. A heartwarming and unforgettable chapter in our Malaysian sailing adventure — filled with turtles, tropical beauty, and the joy of life on the sea aboard No Regrets II. ⚓💙 Timestamps if you like to Jump Right In: 00:00 Intro 00:35 The RIP, Leaving Port Phillip Bay WHO ARE WE? We sail towards the small and beautiful Kapas Island, but the journey turns exciting when we hook our first sailfish along the way! 🎣 After an incredible fight, we safely released this magnificent fish back to the ocean — a truly unforgettable moment at sea. Kapas Island greets us with crystal-clear waters, colourful coral reefs, and a turtle sanctuary run by a passionate local non-profit dedicated to protecting nesting sea turtles. 🐢 While exploring the island, we stumble upon an abandoned resort slowly being reclaimed by nature, and a tug shipwreck washed up on the rocky shore — a dramatic sight and a reminder of the power of the sea. We hoped to witness a turtle laying her eggs — a once-in-a-lifetime experience — but luck wasn’t on our side this time. Despite our late-night vigil on the beach, the turtle returned to the sea before nesting. Still, it was inspiring to see Ronnie’s dedication and the sanctuary’s ongoing conservation work to protect these incredible creatures. Later that night, we join local fishermen for a fascinating look at Malaysian squid fishing, where powerful lights attract the squid before they’re caught using traditional jigs. Another serene and meaningful stop on our journey through Malaysia’s east coast islands — full of adventure, wildlife, and unforgettable moments. 🌴⚓ Timestamps if you like to Jump Right In: 00:00 Intro 00:35 The RIP, Leaving Port Phillip Bay WHO ARE WE? We leave Puteri Harbour and make our way back through the busy Singapore Strait, dodging countless cargo ships and fast ferries along the way. After a long day navigating one of the world’s busiest waterways, we drop anchor at Jason’s Bay—where things take an unexpected turn. A floating island drifts straight toward the anchored boats, and in true No Regrets II fashion, Chris and Marty decide to “claim” it as their own new territory! Armed with Pina Coladas, they hop aboard and ride it triumphantly through the anchorage, laughing the whole way. 🍹🏝️ From there, we sail on to Tioman Island, clear in, and spend several days diving at some incredible sites—including three sunken sailing boats and a navy ship. At Monkey Bay, we dive the famous train wreck, before heading to Tulai Island to snorkel among crystal-clear waters, colourful coral, and thriving marine life. It’s an episode full of laughter, adventure, and underwater exploration in one of Malaysia’s most stunning island destinations! 🌴⚓🐠 Timestamps if you like to Jump Right In: 00:00 Intro 00:30 Singapore Straits 05:19 Claiming our own Floating Island 07:44 Sailing to Tioman Island 11:17 Diving the fishing boat wrecks 13:16 ex Naxy Patrol Boat 14:28 Tioman Island Games 17:51 SNAKES on No Regrets 18:56 Monkey Bay Train Wreck Dive 22:23 Palau Tulai WHO ARE WE? We sail from Pisang Island into Johor Bahru, passing under the bridge that links Malaysia and Singapore before entering Puteri Harbour. Once docked, we explore the ambitious yet eerie Forest City (also called Ghost City) before being welcomed with a festive dinner and drinks as part of the Sail Malaysia Rally. The rally also takes us on a cultural and sightseeing tour of Johor Bahru, where we visit the historic Sultan Ismail Building and Johor State Legislative Assembly, explore the Tanjung Piai Mangrove Nursery, and stand at the southernmost point of Peninsular Malaysia. We even enjoy a sweet stop at a pineapple farm, sampling delicious products, and finish with a vibrant cultural experience. We had an incredible experience at Bohaydulang Island, Sabah, Malaysia, where eight Seawind catamarans came together during the Sail Malaysia Rally for one epic raft-up! In total, we had 3 Seawind 1370s, 4 Seawind 1260s, and 1 Seawind 1250, all lined up side by side in one of the most remote and stunning locations on the planet. With crystal-clear waters, towering islands, and great company, it was the perfect setting for an unforgettable party and celebration of the sailing lifestyle. Being able to raft up with so many Seawinds in such a spectacular part of the world was a true highlight of our rally through Malaysia, and a memory we’ll treasure forever. WHO ARE WE? Hey there!
