Lost in the Jungle: When the Path Disappears and the Guide Starts to Pray... 🧭 We arrived in Cheke Village at a blistering speed of 0.8 knots. In the Solomon Islands, you either have fuel or you have patience—we chose the latter. Our stay in Cheke began with the hauntingly beautiful sound of traditional drumming calling the village to prayer. It gave us a moment to reflect on our "unplugged" life. Without the constant noise of the internet, we’ve found a level of focus, memory, and presence that seems impossible in the modern world. But that presence was put to the test when our guide, LuLu, took us on what he promised was a "short walk." Six hours later, we were deep in the primary rainforest, rock-hopping up a winding creek with no trail in sight. When the bush grew too thick and the direction became unclear, LuLu did the only thing he knew to do: he stopped and prayed for the way. Between blown-out shoes held together by jungle vines and LuLu clearing the path with a machete, it was an adventure we won’t soon forget. To recover, we joined LuLu’s wife to learn the art of making Masi Masi—a traditional Solomon delicacy made from pounded taro and coconut cream, meticulously prepared and baked. We even tried our hand at a "Rainbow Spider Cake," only to be overwhelmed once again by the radical generosity of the locals who gifted us the entire feast.
