Towing Long Loads Safely (Day or Night)

In this episode, I discuss the importance of properly marking your overhanging sailboat or mast on a trailer both day and night. Any load extending 4 feet or more from the end of the trailer (overhang) is required to display a red or orange flag during the day, or a red light (visible from at least 500 feet away) at night mounted on the longest part of the load. This is a requirement in all 50 states and applies to recreational sailboats. Typically, the end of the mast is the longest part of the load and where the flag or light should be attached. I also cover additional (but not required) steps and ideas you can take to improve visibility and safety of your trailer when towing day or night. Trailers with overly long overhangs (8ft to 10ft or more depending on the state) have additional requirements--check your local state regulations.
