The reciprocating steam engine is the very voice of romance at sea. Kipling watched it running and said he saw the hand of God. Here, I go to sea aboard the SS Shieldhall, the largest remaining steamer in Europe, with her all-volunteer crew and her remarkable captain. She’s maintained to the highest standards and she pays her own way with help from the Heritage Lottery Fund.
