It is unfurled by an outhaul furler mounted on the boom. But they DO need cleaning and servicing periodically. Electric 'brushed' motors can become clogged with carbon deposits and the brushes themselves can wear down or simply break. I simple clean and brush replacement can add years to the life of an electric motor. Thanks to ErodexUK (formally ECP) for sourcing the right brushes. Brushless motors, which do not use brushes, have become more popular in many modern applications due to their improved efficiency and reliability.. but not on our boat!
