Sailing Saoirse - One Year since BUYING our Yacht and trying to COMPLETE our refit! (EP 28)

We celebrate our 1 year anniversary since buying our Yacht. It has been a rollercoaster ride - one of those rollercoasters that are fun but not fun all at the same time! When we bought Saoirse we thought 6 months and we will be ready to cross the Atlantic! Boy oh boy were we wrong! We have now hit the one year mark and are probably looking at another 3 years until she is ready.... JUST KIDDING!!!. We are hoping to have her sail ready by the end of July and ocean crossing ready by the end of October. These last 12 months have made us cry, bleed, laugh, sigh, scratch our heads, question our sanity and most of all confused us about the fact that we thought we could do this WITHIN our budget. As any boat/yacht owner knows when you need to have something done and you’ve got a budget, the rule of thumb is to double or triple that budget. Over this year, we packed up our lives, Ballito and Jeffreys Bay and all headed to Saoirse in Langebaan, Western Cape. After 3 and half month period we got an almost completely gutted yacht ready to be put in the water before heading back home to Ballito for Teagan and Colben’s wedding. We then headed back to Saoirse, two weeks later Colben and Teagan joined us. We all powered on through December to March when Denver joined us. During this time we have carried on with carpentry work, fiberglass work, painting cabins and heads, creating cubby’s, laying down our teak flooring, fitting bilge pumps, getting our toilets running, fitting our instruments, fitted electrics, fitted our lights, mounted our plug points, got our brand new sails, got our name and log put on our hulls, our logo printed on our sails, faired many uneven fiberglass surfaces, completed and painted our Bimini, fitted our Bimini, marked our anchor chain, weathered storms and are trying to make it through our first Western Cape winter without freezing to death. Our lives have been non stop *wake up, eat, work, eat, work, eat and back to sleep* with MANY cups of coffee in between. Covid-19 definitely did not help our cause. We have been unable to have Chris Boock or anyone else, come in to help with work we needed done. With this happening we have missed our weather window to cross the Atlantic and now have to wait until November. Apart from the frustration, it’s also messed with our budget yet again. With the economy opening up now, we are able to get work done that we have needed to get done before we are able to leave to head over to a less expensive anchorage - hopefully by the end of July.
