To Greece by the Northern Route?@Sailing Adventures with Grandad In this episode we enter Greece by the Northern route across the Gulf of Patras and the Gulf of Corinth on our way to the Corinth Canal. There are few boats in mid summer and its gorgeous. We stop in the seaside town of Nafpaktos where the Battle of Lepanto took place in 1571 and there discover Don Quijote. In the historical Battle of Lepanto, the fleet of the Catholic Alliance defeated the Ottoman Naval fleet and the author of Don Quijote, Miguel de Cervantes, lost the use of his left arm. He would go on to fight many more battles for God and Country before he would pen the first modern novel of Don Quijote de La Mancha. Don Quijote is the story of a country gentleman who assuming the name Don Quijote becomes a night errant commited with soul and passion to defend the helpless and destroy the wicked. He heads off into the countryside, and there lives one absurdly heroic adventure after another. Don Quijote is considered the first modern novel that has inpired art and literature for centuries from Shakespeare & Dostoyevsky, to Kafka, Picasso & Dali, and more recently the musical Man of La Mancha with 2328 performances and 5 tony awards. Our arrival in Greece and visit to Nafpaktos turned out to be a gorgeous and exciting welcome to a varied and historic Greece. I started this Channel , SAILING ADVENTURES WITH GRANDAD ,to share with you my travels on Vayu my 44 ft sloop. I appreciate my good fortune and create these videos to share this fortunate life journey with friends, family and all who care to join us. This channel was launched at the beginning of the Ukrainian invasion and I make monthly contributions to Save the Children-Ukraine, in the hope that millions of us contributing can help ease the suffering of the many displaced Ukrainian families.
