Learn how to safely raise the mainsail on a Balance catamaran—from positioning the boat into the wind and lifting the boom to completing the hoist and transitioning under sail. In this video, we cover: • Coordinating between the helm and deck crew • Raising the boom using the mainsheets and topping lift • Feeding the sail cleanly between the lazyjacks • Checking that the reefing lines are running freely • Adjusting halyard tension for the conditions • Bearing away and powering up the mainsail The key is to work slowly, keep the boat pointed into the wind and watch the sail throughout the hoist. Remember to ease the topping lift before tacking so it does not foul the sail. These principles apply broadly to Balance catamarans and other performance sailing catamarans, although every boat and sail-handling system is different.
