Mumm 36 Chinese Gybe

No this is not a repeat of an earlier video, sadly it is another example of how not to go downwind in a big breeze. Call it what you like, a, Chinese gybe, an uncontrolled gybe or a death roll. What ever you choose to call it, it's never fun to wipe out like this. The team of GTR was leader the heat 7 for the 2020 Frosties regatta when a puff of close to 30 knots caught up with the crew on the first downwind leg. At first it looks like Team GTR had been able to save it after the initial gust hit. Sadly they did not have enough sheet tension to keep things on the straight and narrow. The relief was only temporary, 10 seconds later the Chinese Gybe could not be avoided with a slow roll which broke the spinnaker pole. I am happy to report that everyone on Team GTR made it a shore safely, even the mast man that tried to hope off just before the wipe out looking like he was more interested in taking a bath than help the crew recover from the uncontrolled gybe. Usually a days racing with an outcome like this would get me down, after the year we have had in 2020 no one was complaining. Much better to be out sailing even if you wipe out rather than sitting at home in a COVID lockdown. Thanks for watching another Bottom Up Boats production.
