Once you have opened the door slightly the spring will push the door to the fully open position. There are many sizes, designs set at various pressures and made from a variety of materials so it's important to choose the right one for the job. On boats this invariably means choosing a 316 stainless steel one. Replacing a gas strut is one of the easier DIY sailboat maintenance jobs. But when you're travelling the world by sea one of the biggest challenges is sourcing parts. Even if you can find them online, getting them delivered to your location is a whole other challenge, especially something as specialised as a pair of stainless steel, 600mm, 400N gas heavy lift, gas spring struts! Luckily a few of our maintenance jobs coincided with a trip to the UK so we picked up a few spare parts on the fly.
