Ep. 88. WINCH GONE WILD. This could have been DANGEROUS!!!
We’ve been in a St. Lucia during hurricane season doing a sailing shuffle, sailing north up to Rodney Bay to anchor out during the week then back to our dock in the Marigot Bay for the weekend lockdown, and then staying a week or two before heading back to Rodney Bay for fresh groceries. In this episode we describe how one of our winches suddenly went crazy, turning on by itself at high speed and would not stop. That was super dangerous because the genoa sheet was on the winch and could have caused a rigging failure! Lesson learned: never leave loaded lines on the winch when not sailing. We show our solution to keep the genoa lines tight without loading the winch. WE MAKE OUR VIDEOS PUBLIC TO SHARE OUR ENJOYMENT OF OUR OCEAN WORLD. About 1 in 500 of us have a silent CCM lesion in our brain. CCMs may unexpectedly bleed and may cause stroke or seizure. People with the genetic form of the disease have multiple lesions. Your contribution will help find a cure. Lisa has dedicated her career to finding cures for neurological diseases and would greatly appreciate any level of support from our BioTrek-sailing audience. 00:00 00:51 Anchorages in Rodney Bay 01:20 Grocery shopping in Rodney Bay 02:34 Arriving back in Marigot - our current home 03:41 Land crabs 04:19 Pierre discussing access to winch 05:33 Pierre explains how the winch started running 06:23 Why this was so dangerous 07:00 Access to winch relays 08:45 Trouble shooting the problem at the foot switch 09:40 What caused the winch to run by itself 10:45 Breakers for the winches 11:35 Solution to not loading the winch 12:00 Giving an ipad to a local girl who needs it for on-line school MUSIC BY EPIDEMIC SOUND and A Bitter Love by Sven Karlsson And then we fell from the sky - Across the great valley Ursol - Valente Lost in Atlantis by Smartface
