Always one of the best value commentators, Nathan Outteridge stepped ashore at the Emirates Team New Zealand Wynyard Base after yet another upped-ante day in Auckland of pressured race practice in the team’s AC40 LEQ12 with the one-design AC40 and gave the recon team a wide-ranging interview covering the day, what they’re looking to achieve, how the foil testing is going and a glimpse of the team’s immediate future. To the naked eye, and from on/off-water recon shots, the new long-span starboard foil looks to be asymmetric with the outboard end curving gently upwards and the inboard end having slight anhedral bend. At the tips, and when viewed from on the water, the outboard end curves forward, whilst the inboard foil curves ever-so-slightly aft. The tips are both squared off and the join around the bulb area is incredibly well detailed and hydrodynamic. The recon team could certainly notice reduced leeway that ultimately produced great upwind height. Nathan gives his view, from his privileged perspective in the video. A must-watch – Nathan is one of the great communicators of the current America’s Cup. Section 41. Reconnaissance a) As a campaign cost reduction measure, COR/D has mutually agreed to cooperatively implement a centralised reconnaissance programme for all teams for the reconnaissance of all Competitors’ AC75 Yachts, AC40 Yachts and LEQ12 yachts including both on-land and on-water imagery (the “Joint Recon Programme”). b) Each team is assigned a two-person Recon Unit to follow their every on-water move, but it's not that simple. The cameras are supplied and identical for all Recon Units. Drones are not allowed, and they can't get that close, plus following a boat and keeping a camera steady at 45 knots isn't that easy to begin with. c) A three minute interview follows each on water day, and teams must answer the Recon Unit's questions while trying not to give too much away. It's a raw, unedited view of the never before seen behind-the-scenes development of a team and their boat to win the oldest trophy in international sports. #AC37Recon #AmericasCup #Barcelona2024
