Drunken Sailor

**DRUNKEN SAILOR** What do you do with a drunken sailor? It’s an old sea shanty — and a funny question. But underneath the humor is a much more serious one: **How do you know when drinking has become a problem?** In this episode of *Starting Over*, I take a lighthearted but straightforward look at alcohol, problem drinking, and some of the questions we sometimes avoid asking ourselves. It isn’t simply about **how much** a person drinks. Sometimes the better questions are: • What happens when you drink? • Has alcohol ever affected your relationships? • Have you made decisions while drinking that you later regretted? • Do you find yourself drinking when you’re lonely, angry, anxious, or depressed? • Have people who care about you ever expressed concern? • Have you ever wondered yourself whether you might be drinking too much? You don’t have to fit somebody else’s picture of an “alcoholic” before alcohol can be causing trouble in your life. And you don’t necessarily have to hit some spectacular “rock bottom” before deciding that maybe something needs to change. This episode isn’t about judging anybody. It’s about taking an honest look at ourselves — preferably while we still have the freedom to do something about what we see. A little humor. A little sailing. And a serious question hiding underneath an old sailor’s song.
