Lavender oil and production are hugely profitable exports in Croatia & this week we're learning how to harvest it from the self-proclaimed Lavender King! Hvar Island is central to lavender production in Croatia and just over 50 years ago, this island was responsible for 8% of the world's lavender production! That's an impressive amount of lavender for a relatively small Adriatic Island! Lavender blooms on Hvar Island between late May and mid-July, with late June being the best time to visit if you're looking for fragrant fields of purple covering the island. If you're planning on visiting the Lavender Fields in Hvar, why not time your visit to coincide with the Annual Lavender Festival that takes place at the end of June. If you're looking to taste lavender flavored ice-cream, pastries, cosmetics, and souvenirs, the Annual Lavender Festival is for you! Local Stories is a series dedicated to providing an insight into the quirky aspects of Croatian people, culture, and traditions!
