Ben's shaping the centreline or keel using a traditional tool-an Adze-which, as he describes, is one of, or possibly, the oldest tool used by mankind. With the Adze he's specifically shaping the rebate on the keel, called the 'rabbet', where the garboard plank will sit. Justin, the yard manager at Gweek Quay Classic Boatyard, gives insight into Ben Harris' daring project, pointing out the risks involved and the characteristics needed for success: "At the moment, wood is insanely expensive, so taking a risk with a lot of wood is not going to be done by many people at the moment, that's for sure.". FYI the schooner project is for sale, as previously mentioned in other episodes. Ben's website has more details on this, and the best way to contact him is through that website (link below). Next, in the coming days, another video will reveal Ben's plan with the keel casting. Backstory: In December 2024, traditional boat builder Ben Harris announced his most daring project yet - building a John Alden-designed schooner. Subscribe to Classic Yacht TV for more updates!
