Building Eleutheros - Wooden Boat | Sailing Eleutheros EP1

In this exciting first episode of Sailing Eleutheros, we share the incredible story of constructing our full-keeled cruising sailboat, Eleutheros, from the keel up. Starting in 2002, we carefully laminated frames and built the backbone using iroko wood. Watch as we create the mold for the lead keel and melt 7,500 pounds of lead to pour into the mold. The journey wasn’t without challenges—being forced to move away from the first building site in 2004 meant we no longer had a heated space to work on the boat during the winters. Over the next 19 years, Eleutheros was built in seven locations and traveled over 2,000 km, culminating in her final launch at Beach Point, PEI. This custom-built boat is a modified version of Francis Herreshoff’s design #99, extended by nearly 3 feet and featuring unique modifications to her rig and construction. The masts, made from hollow Spanish cedar, and the high-modulus Dyneema standing rigging make Eleutheros an exceptional cruising sailboat.
