Building a cruising sailboat A few words about boat plans and alterations bfore we buy another slab of black locust and mill it to get the wood for the aft deck cross piece, the lazarette hatch frame and the sliding hatch turtle. The base part of the hatch turtle is formed and fitted. Along the way, we have a look at the acrylic 'glass' for the sliding hatch and sealants for that. The boat is constructed of exterior quality plywood, sealed with epooxy and sheathed in glass fibre and epoxy. One of the great beauties of these boats is that the ballast keel is fitted towards the end of the build, enabling the boat to be kept lower in the shed for most of the construction time.
