The town of Sinj comes alive to host the historical annual Alkar Tournament. The Sinjska Alka is a medieval tournament that has taken place annually in the Croatian town of Sinj since the 18th century. During the tournaments, knights dressed in traditional costumes ride horses at full gallop along a designated area, aiming for an iron ring hanging on a rope. To participate in the Sinjska Alka you must be from a local family, forming a strong community of Alkar's that span many generations. This tournament is the only remaining example of medieval knightly competitions in Croatia. More than just a sport, the Alkar Tournament represents tradition, history, and a way of life and is recognized by UNESCO as an important cultural event. Local Stories is a series dedicated to providing an insight into the quirky aspects of Croatian people, culture, and traditions!
