Baking with Fire and Stone
No Electricity, No Problem: The Secret to Baking with Hot Stones ๐ฅฅ๐ฅ In the remote villages of the Solomon Islands, "low and slow" isn't just a cooking styleโitโs a way of life. In this episode, we step into the kitchen of Kerry and his wife to learn the labor-intensive art of making Traditional Cassava Pudding. This isn't your average recipe; it involves hand-grating fresh tapioca, extracting rich cream from coconuts, and a layering process inside flame-seared banana leaves. The real magic, however, lies in the oven. Forget gas or electricity; here, they use recycled 20L fuel drums and intensely heated stones to create a natural convection oven that rivals any modern appliance. We watch as the locals bake fresh bread and slow-cook our pudding for over 12 hours under a mound of rocks and leaves. While the fire does its work, we discover a surprising food: Mangrove Seeds. We learn the meticulous process required to make these bitter seeds edibleโa true testament to the resourcefulness of the Solomon people.
