A step by step guide to the leeward Mark rounding in sailing.
A step by step guide to rounding the leeward mark in any sailing dinghy. Success looks like. 1. Exit close hauled, close to the mark. 2. Maintain speed 3. With the boat set up for the upwind leg. The steps... 1. Position your boat on the downwind leg to allow an approach wide of the mark and an exit close to the mark. 2. Adjust the controls, set outhaul and downhaul in upwind settings, pull on the kicker slightly to help the turn. 3. Daggerboard down 4. Turn the boat. Keep the boat flat or slightly heeled to leeward to promote turning. Aim for a smooth turn with the mainsheet pulled in as the boat rounds the mark. 5. Exit close to the mark, check you are close hauled. 6. Adjust the kicker. Check how successful your rounding was by looking at your wake as it passes the buoy and assessing your speed and course. Practice around a small course, add complexity by gybing as you round and have a go at letting go of the tiller.
