44 Months of Custom Development: Inside SeaNet’s 53m Superyacht Build

In this third episode, David Seal sits down once again with SeaNet founder Matty Zadnikar to look at what happened long before delivery and the extraordinary amount of work that went into taking this project from an owner’s initial ideas to a completed yacht. The entire process took 44 months, but as Matty explains, those 44 months weren’t simply construction time. Around eight months were spent before the contract was even signed, defining exactly what the owner wanted, developing detailed specifications, benchmarking shipyards and negotiating the contract. The starting point wasn’t the shipyard or even the exterior design. It was the owner and how he intended to use the yacht. Moving from a 35-metre production yacht to a fully custom 53-metre project meant starting with a blank sheet of paper and understanding everything from cruising plans and entertainment to wellness, cuisine and everyday life on board. The captain, engineers, chief stewardess and even the chef were involved in developing the specification. Matty explains that the more detailed the specification is before signing, the less room there is for unexpected changes during construction. In this case, the final deviation from the initial budget was just 0.05%, largely due to the owner later choosing to upgrade to metallic paint. David and Matty also discuss the construction itself and SeaNet’s approach to project management. Specialist surveyors were brought in for different areas, including welding, paint, construction and the yacht’s highly specified interior. Rather than trying to keep every discipline in-house, SeaNet coordinated the different specialists while maintaining oversight of the project and its finances. Then comes the moment everyone has been working towards: delivery. Matty explains why he won’t accept a yacht unless the technical list is virtually at zero, why certain cosmetic items can sometimes wait, and why taking ownership doesn’t mean the owner can immediately step aboard and start cruising. Tenders, equipment and owner supplies still need to be loaded, while the yacht has to be prepared, registered and transferred before the first guests arrive. The finished yacht itself remains deliberately under wraps for now. David and Matty explain that the intention is to build anticipation before revealing the completed 53-metre yacht in full, including an interior that Matty describes as among the highest-specification interiors he has personally seen.
