[05] The Iron Men of the Mersey

These sculptures are by the artist Anthony Gormley and are on Crosby beach, north of Liverpool at the tip of the Mersey estuary and facing the Irish Sea. According to Gormley, the purpose was to explore man's relationship with nature and the beach, with the ebb and flow of tides, was a good place to explore this. Our impression was that each was alone, utterly alone and facing the ravages of time and tide in a losing battle as the sea claims them. We felt guilty leaving them there at the end of the day.
