Why do passenger boats in Bali use four, six, or even eight outboard engines? What looks like ridiculous overkill is actually one of the smartest solutions in Indonesian island tourism. In this video, we explore the surprising engineering and business logic behind Bali’s multi-engine fast boats—and why these strange-looking vessels are essential for routes to Nusa Penida, the Gili Islands, Lombok, and other popular destinations across Indonesia. At first glance, hanging a huge row of outboard motors from the stern of a passenger boat seems excessive. But Bali’s marine infrastructure creates a unique set of challenges. Many fast boats do not operate from deep, protected harbors. Instead, they often pick up and drop off passengers directly on beaches or in very shallow water. That makes conventional inboard propulsion much more vulnerable. Shafts and propellers can be damaged by sand, rocks, or contact with the seabed. Outboard engines offer a simple advantage: they can be tilted upward using their power-trim systems, allowing the boat to approach shallow beaches without destroying its propulsion system. Multiple outboards also provide something extremely important at sea: redundancy. If a boat relies on one engine and that engine fails, the vessel may be left drifting with dozens of passengers onboard. But when a boat has four, six, or more engines, it can often continue navigating even after one or two units stop working. The journey may take longer, but the passengers can still reach their destination safely. There is also a practical maintenance advantage. Brands such as Yamaha and Suzuki are widely used throughout Indonesia, making spare parts, replacement engines, and trained mechanics easier to find. Instead of taking a vessel out of service for weeks, operators may be able to replace or repair an outboard engine relatively quickly. Of course, the system is not perfect. Multiple outboard engines consume enormous amounts of fuel, require constant maintenance, and create significant operating costs. Some operators have experimented with waterjet propulsion, but waterjets can also suffer in shallow, sandy environments when sediment enters the system and damages the impellers. Ultimately, these boats are a perfect example of practical marine engineering. They may not look elegant, but they solve the real problems faced by Bali’s fast-boat operators: shallow water, limited docking infrastructure, tight schedules, heavy passenger demand, and the need to avoid breakdowns at sea. These engines do more than move boats. They help move millions of tourists and support a major part of Indonesia’s island economy. What do you think?
