And the closer we came to the “exit” of the Gulf of Corinth on the west side, the more we saw the bridge near the city of Patras appear. It is the longest cable-stayed bridge in the world, about 2,880 metres long, connecting the Peloponnese peninsula with mainland Greece. There were quite a few challenges in building the bridge, as the foundation had to be placed in deep water with a loose seabed, and there is seismic activity and tectonic movement in this area because the Gulf of Corinth is slowly expanding. The bridge was opened shortly before the 2004 Athens Olympic Games. The vertical clearance under the bridge deck is approximately 52 metres in the widest central section. In the side sections (less central), the height is considerably lower, around 32 metres, and at the very edges about 15 metres.

SV-true-love is a 1981 Gulfstar 39 Sailmaster. She is a heavily laid up boat and perfect for the conditions in the northeast Atlantic region. Her interior is comprised of teak, marine grade plywood and some laminates. But the overall build of this boat was made with top quality materials, no longer used in most production boats today. Only 57 of these boats were built due to the high cost. In 1981, these boats were considerably more expensive at $150k+, then was the average home price in the US at the time.

Rich was swimming with the same curious young humpback whale that I swam with. He kept approaching until they were literally eye to eye — an absolutely mesmerizing moment. The whale twirled through the water like a graceful ballerina. Juvenile humpback whales are known for their playful and inquisitive behavior, especially when their mothers are close by. His mom was just below us the whole time, calmly watching over her adventurous calf.
