Welcome to our latest #CruisingConversation with Nathan and Lindsey from The 71 Percent! The adventures of The 71 Percent have already captured headlines as they have taken command of a new Selene 49 down under. In 2026 they are one of the biggest trawler stories as their growing audience of YouTube subscribers are following their trip across the Pacific from Australia to North America. This video was filmed aboard a freshly completed Selene 51 during the Selene Grand Opening celebration in early December 2025. The Jet Tern Marine yard in Zhuhai, China was in red carpet – VIP – celebration mode - and it was an amazing couple of days for Howard Chen and all of the team at Selene. Jeff was able to catch up with Nathan and Lindsay at the yard – they had flown up from Australia where they were in the middle of preparations for their Pacific crossing. They soaked up the highlights and spoke to the dealers from all over the world to share some about their trip. None of this would be possible without the collaboration between Selene Australia and Selene Americas – there is a positive vibe throughout the dealer network that is incredibly productive. Nathan and Lindsey had a blast seeing the yard, inspecting boats in construction, meeting the workers and spending time with other Selene owners. For them it was fun to enjoy a quick break before getting back to business for final tasks before taking off on their Selene adventure. It’s kind of hard to introduce people who everybody already knows, but there are many people who are always interested and can’t get enough of Nathan and Lindsey. We were able to have a fun discussion on board to review their planning, preparation and giddiness of outfitting a serious trawler for the type of deep water travel it is designed for. A lot more goes into this type of commitment – weather windows, engine room checks, standing watch, navigation and routing, tools, spare parts, organizing provisions, cooking, when and whether to have crew, living a full life underway…it’s not just get-the-camera-out-and-film. Looking back at this short pilothouse discussion, I have to admit I’m even more impressed. Nathan and Lindsey are approachable, friendly, kind, genuine, authentic and just great, fun people with a lot of energy that comes through loud and clear in their YouTube and Instagram, which they spend hours producing. Ever looked at the night sky, noticed a super-bright star and wondered if it might be a planet? Here’s how to work planet coordinates, so that you can see what it is. If you’re far from the prime meridian (that’s at zero longitude, Greenwich, UK) you’ll have to do one more little sum because what you need to find is how far the planet is from your own meridian, not the one at Greenwich. If you’re in West longitude, you do this my subtracting your longitude from the Greenwich Hour Angle of the planet to find the Local Hour Angle, and off you go. Wondering what an hour angle is? Watch the video and find out. You’ll be enlightened, and if some of our neighbours in east longitude go on increasing their interference with GPS, we might all be glad of the knowledge. We’re back after a short break, and a lot has changed aboard Chasing Serenity. In this episode, we explain why we need to haul out for three weeks and why we’re also heading back to Minnesota to prepare our house for sale — a big step toward fully committing to life afloat. On the boat, we’ve been busy with major upgrades. We more than doubled our solar capacity, remove an unsafe central propane system, and convert to an all-electric galley with an induction range. With the oven gone, we build new custom shelves to take advantage of the extra storage space. We also straighten a bent stanchion foot, replace our VHF antenna cable, and properly seal the VHF antenna to prevent future leaks. These projects are part of a larger push to make our catamaran safer, simpler, and better suited for long-term cruising. ⛵ This episode is about progress — stepping back briefly so we can move forward with a stronger, safer boat and a clearer path ahead. Und wir wären gerne noch geblieben. Aber wieder einmal stehen wir unter Zeitdruck. Der Beginn der Zyklonen-Saison rückt näher. So brechen wir auf nach Neukaledonien, welches zu Frankreich gehört und aus Dutzenden Inseln besteht. Die Hauptinsel Grand Terre ist bekannt für die artenreiche Lagune, die mit 24.000 km² zu den größten weltweit gehört. Wir gehen in einer abgelegenen Bucht vor Anker bevor wir am darauffolgenden Morgen zur Hauptstadt Nouméa verholen, um einzuklarieren. Neukaledonien hat einen vergleichbaren Lebensstandard wie Australien, Neuseeland oder Fidschi – Amtssprache ist Französisch. Wir nutzen das nächste Wetterfenster, um an die australische Ostküste überzusetzen und klarieren in Southport ein. Die Einklarierungsregeln in Australien sind berüchtigt. Wir haben aber Glück: die Beamten von Immigration und Customs sowie Biosecurity sind ausgesprochen freundlich und kompetent. Wir haben uns schweren Herzens entschieden hier in Australien unsere Reise zu beenden und MariaNoa zu verkaufen. Hierfür muss MariaNoa nach Australien importiert werden. Brigitta war natürlich vollkommen überrascht, obwohl eine Weltumsegelung wesentlich besser in Ihr berufliches Leben passte als in meins. In den folgenden 6 Monaten hat Brigitta aber eine erstaunliche Entwicklung hinter sich gebracht und freut sich über unser großes Abenteuer genau wie ich. The 1904 built Maritimo Katwinchar raced to Hobart for the first time in 1951 when a group of English friends sailed her to Sydney from the UK and were persuaded to join the race. Maritimo owner Bill Barry-Cotter was keen to find out what had happened to Katwinchar after his father owned her 1960s, so when the boat was found languishing in a backwater on the Central Coast – and for sale on Gumtree - Bill Barry-Cotter went about restoring her. Skipper Michael Spies who raced her to Hobart in the Double Handed division in 2024 says that Katwinchar has always been a very fast boat – and he’s looking to prove as much, racing her with a full crew in 2025. Amongst his team will be Scott Kaufman, famed yacht designer and sailor and Emma Rankin, a graduate of the 18 Footers academy and the first female skipper to win an 18 foot skiff NSW Championship race.
