Melbourne ist die Hauptstadt des Bundesstaates Victoria in Australien. Sie ist mit etwa 5,2 Millionen Einwohnern nach Sydney knapp die zweitgrößte Stadt Australiens. Die Stadt liegt rund um die Mündung des Yarre-River. Das Wetter in Melbourne ist sehr wechselhaft und wird gerne mit „four seasons in a day“ – also - „Vier Jahreszeiten an einem Tag“ beschrieben. Starke Wetterschwankungen sind vor allem jetzt im Frühjahr bis zum Sommer zu beobachten. Sie äußern sich primär in Form von Stürmen, Regen und schnellen Temperaturstürzen. Brigitta war natürlich vollkommen überrascht, obwohl eine Weltumsegelung wesentlich besser in Ihr berufliches Leben passte als in meins. In den folgenden 6 Monaten hat Brigitta aber eine erstaunliche Entwicklung hinter sich gebracht und freut sich über unser großes Abenteuer genau wie ich. An extended camera pan unveiling the hull of MALABAR IV opens this episode– it’s fantastic to note this project commenced one year ago! The team’s hard work and Ben Harris' courageous vision have produced a beautiful shape that is also a credit to American yacht designer John Alden's work. As the video illustrates, this project is presented FOR SALE – now is the perfect opportunity for a buyer to design and build the interior and rig to their specifications. Starting with offering up a spiling batten below the plank above and marking the angle and position of the stem, then marking every station frame (which is every three foot throughout the hull) – transferring that information to a length of yellow cedar (in this case) where he then references a table of data which becomes crucial to the process of starting to shape the timber into a plank. The table of data he references provides the width(s) of each plank at each station (station frames in the hull), data that needs to be marked onto the length of timber that will become a plank. With the data transferred, Ben then ‘springs’ a batten through those data points to provide a fair curve which can then be shaped. He then measures the bevel angle between the frame and the plank at each station - learn more about the bevel strip in the video. With real-world stops-and-starts, including pauses for issues that crop up along the way, we hope this is both relaxing and an informative episode showing more of the process of traditional boatbuilding, and to see John Alden’s MALABAR IV - a 47-foot schooner - come to life. #153 Roadtrip Sydney-Melbourne ▬ ÜBER DIESEN FILM ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ Mit unserem nahezu neuem Interstate One brechen wir auf zu unserem Roadtrip durch Australien. Wir haben fünf Monate Zeit, sind uns aber im Klaren, dass wir nur einen Teil dieses riesigen Landes kennenlernen werden. Wir bevorzugen, ausgewählte Bereiche mit etwas Zeit zu erleben als unendliche Kilometer abzureißen. Was hier in Australien aufgrund der Unendlichkeit durchaus möglich wäre. Die Qualität der Straßen in Australien ist eine Zumutung – um nicht zu sagen lebensgefährlich. Ob kleine Nebenstraße oder 4-6 spurige Schnellstraße. Alle sind gespickt mit Schlaglöchern. Wenn es nicht rechtzeitig gelingt diesen auszuweichen, kracht unser Interstate One mit den Vor- oder Hinterrädern in diese hinein und man hat Sorge, dass die Radaufhängung unbeschadet überlebt. Am Straßenrand liegen immer wieder zerfetzte und aufgedunsene Kadaver von Kangaroos und Wombats, die dem Straßenverkehr zum Opfer gefallen sind. Wie die Schlaglöcher sind auch sie markiert. Manchmal kommt das Leben aber anders als man plant. Im Frühjahr 2020 erhielt ich die Diagnose Morbus Parkinson. Plötzlich beschleunigte sich mein Leben erheblich, ich verkaufte mein Haus, löste den Hausrat auf und begann Berge an Schiffsausrüstung anzuschaffen. „Leinen los!“ war für Anfang März 2021geplant – und so kam es auch, trotz Corona. Brigitta war natürlich vollkommen überrascht, obwohl eine Weltumsegelung wesentlich besser in Ihr berufliches Leben passte als in meins. In den folgenden 6 Monaten hat Brigitta aber eine erstaunliche Entwicklung hinter sich gebracht und freut sich über unser großes Abenteuer genau wie ich. Insgesamt sind wir aktuell 4 ½ Jahre unterwegs. Ein Abenteuer folgt dem nächsten und wir genießen jeden Tag aufs Neue. Auf der Suche nach Freiheit und Unabhängigkeit, Abenteuerlust und Naturverbundenheit segeln wir - Brigitta und Hannes - gemeinsam um die Welt. Johannes ist wieder auf Bootssuche – nach dem erfolgreichen Verkauf seiner Dehler 41 DS mit unserer Unterstützung konnte er es nicht lange ohne Boot aushalten. Dieses Mal sollte es für eine Langfahrt sein, bei der Stehhöhe und Komfort eine größere Rolle spielen – er traut sich den Umstieg auf einen Katamaran.
