Große Aufregung bei befreundeten Yachten, die sich bereits auf den ABC-Insel in Sicherheit wähnten und die uns nun rieten, hier auf den BVI zu bleiben. Dem Tropischen Sturm folgt jedoch mit einem Abstand von wenigen Tagen ein weiterer Tropischer Sturm, diesmal mit direktem Kurs auf die BVI. Der Abstand zwischen beiden ist zu kurz, um eben schnell nach Bonaire zu segeln. Das Warten geht also weiter. Flughafen mit Dingy Dock. In der Trellis Bay fahren wir mit dem Dingy vom Ankerplatz zum Dingy Dock und stehen nach nur wenigen Schritten vor dem Abfertigungsgebäude um meinen Sohn Tobias abzuholen. Um uns die Wartezeit zu vertreiben, schlendern wir durch eine Künstlerkolonie. Hier finden die berühmten Fullmoonparties statt. Leider hatten wir diese knapp verpasst. In der White Bay Guana Islands waren wir schon einmal und haben vergeblich versucht den Anker zum Halten zu bringen. Diesmal klappte es nach einigen Anläufen, es gibt nur wenige Sandfelder. Obwohl Guana Islands eine Privatinsel ist, begegnen die Mitarbeiter uns während unserer Wanderung ausgesprochen freundlich. Die White Bay auf Jost van Dyke ist ein Phänomen. Hier treffen sich amerikanische Katamarancrews und treiben in ihrer laut-fröhlichen Art mit einem Getränk in der Hand stundenlang im lauwarmen Wasser. Auch wir ordern einen Painkiller bei Soggys und setzen uns mit den Füßen im Wasser an den Strand. In der Privateer Bay auf Norman Islands tauchen wir in die dortigen Höhlen und segeln anschließend weiter in die Bucht Little Harbour auf Peter Islands. Our weather window for the season is quickly shrinking as we make much needed repairs in Brazil, then the bad news arrives and threatens our plan to sail around Cape Horn & the rest of the world. Bluewater sailing isn't always easy. #sailing #brazil #sailingaroundtheworld We've arrived in Ilhabela Brazil and have been accepted into the country to make repairs before our plans of heading south to Cape Horn. We try to make quick work of it and even make a few friends in our short stay there. Smiles and good times are shared after our longest passage at sea. Brazil turned out to be such a beautiful surprise and we are so grateful for their hospitality. But soon we are confronted with a big decision after reading news that could alter our plans significantly. So who is this crazy sailing couple making fun videos to share? Well, we are Kate and Curtis. As race winning regatta sailors, we already knew how to sail before we both sold up and headed out to sea, and had the goal of sailing around the world via Cape Horn and the Cape of Good Hope. We brought our mixed rescue dog along with us as she loves sailing and swimming too! We enjoy both solo sailing (while the other is sleeping) and doublehanded sailing (as a couple). Many people want to know if we are like Sailing la Vagabonde, well not quite. We don't have a catamaran, there are no kids (yet), and our plan from the get go was to go around the world via the southern ocean. Before we left we did watch (and still do), and were inspired by other sailing channels such as Gone With The Wynns, Nahoa, Sailing Uma, Project Atticus, and well of course the original, SV Delos. Our boat is a year 2000 J Boats J/46. We searched for 3 years for our perfect sailboat for sale, when we found it, we knew it was the one. We spent 6 months doing a bit of boat restoration and re-fitting in Rhode Island with solar panels, lithium batteries, a watermaker, wind power, and more and then went for our shakedown voyage in Maine. We stopped in Annapolis for a bit to do some more refit work and offshore modifications, installing a inner forestay (cutter rig staysail) and new rudder bearings, then we set off to the open sea. We went to the Bahamas, Miami, US Virgin Islands, BVI, Grenada, Carriacou, St. Maarten, where we enjoyed outdoor adventures, scuba diving, and have now did an Atlantic Crossing to the Azores where we had a chance to fly our drone (and learned how to fly a drone from a boat) and one of our favorite past times, mountain biking. After leaving the Azores we sailed to Tenerife. From there we have left on a huge voyage, transatlantic again, this time to South America as we head for our goal of rounding cape horn to enter the pacific ocean. We now live off grid on our sailboat, and we have sailed over 10,000 bluewater miles to date. But we are well prepared with enough food, water, and fuel to carry on to the next place if we have to! The port we find to enter is not a normal one for small yachts to enter the country, and our research on Brazil hasn't told us too much since we originally did not intend to come here... See what happens when we finally make landfall! So who is this crazy sailing couple making fun videos to share? Well, we are Kate and Curtis. We both sold up and headed out to sea, with the goal of sailing around the world via Cape Horn and the Cape of Good Hope. We brought our mixed rescue dog along with us as she loves sailing and swimming too! Our boat is a year 2000 J Boats J/46. We searched for 3 years for our perfect sailboat for sale, when we found it, we knew it was the one. We spent 6 months re-fitting it in Rhode Island and then went for our shakedown voyage in Maine. We stopped in Annapolis for a bit to do some more refit work and offshore modifications, then we set off to the open sea. We went to the Bahamas, Miami, US Virgin Islands, BVI, Grenada, Carriacou, St. Maarten, where we enjoyed outdoor adventures, scuba diving, and have now did an Atlantic Crossing to the Azores where we had a chance to fly our DJI drone (and learned how to fly a drone from a boat) and one of our favorite past times, mountain biking. After leaving the Azores we sailed to Tenerife. From there we have left on a huge voyage, transatlantic again, this time to South America as we head for our goal of rounding cape horn to enter the pacific ocean. In Corona-Zeiten ein absolutes Muss. Marine Traffic zeigt nicht nur, wo sich befreundete Yachten aktuell aufhalten, wo viele Yachten und wo wenige Yachten sind. Mit Marine Traffic messen wir die Entfernung zum Ziel, um unter Annahme einer Durchschnittsgeschwindigkeit die Reisezeit zu kalkulieren. Da wir gerne bei Tageslicht im Zielgebiet ankommen, kann bei mehrtägigen Törns der Abfahrtszeitpunkt bestimmt werden. Auch über die App Vessel Finder können alle Yachten lokalisiert werden, die ein AIS-Signal aussenden. Marine Traffic sowie Vessel Finder sind kostenlose Apps privater Anbieter. Leider sind sie deshalb lückenhaft, wie z.B. hier im Norden der British Virgin Islands. Windy gibt Auskunft über Windstärken, Böen und Wellenhöhen in dem zu befahrenden Seegebiet. Obwohl dies 9 Tage im Voraus erfolgt, sollte einem immer bewusst sein, dass die zugrunde liegenden Wettermodelle eine einigermaßen seriöse Vorhersage maximal 5 Tage im Voraus errechnen können. In den letzten 6 Monaten hat Sie aber eine erstaunliche Entwicklung hinter sich gebracht und freut sich auf unser großes Abenteuer genau wie ich. Can we enter the closed country of Brazil? We need to enter to make repairs after our longest passage at sea. After over 25 Days of sailing across the Atlantic Ocean from North to South we try to find a safe place to anchor, rest, and get our bearings in the deserted jungle coastline. #sailing #bluewater #sailingaroundtheworld #brazil Our pesky sailboat causes a bit of a traffic Jam as we near the coast just outside the Campos Oil Fields in Brazil with a giant cruise ship and other passing freighters and tankers. The water changes color as we close in and sadly bypass the large city of Rio de Janeiro. Our boat dog, Roxy, finally get's some sniffs of land, but is it just a teaser? Finally, we spot a protected cove and the draw of a full night of sleep no longer offshore changing shifts is so ever tempting, so we launch the drone and inspect. So who is this crazy sailing couple making fun videos to share? Well, we are Kate and Curtis. We both sold up and headed out to sea, with the goal of sailing around the world via Cape Horn and the Cape of Good Hope. We brought our mixed rescue dog along with us as she loves sailing and swimming too! Our boat is a year 2000 J Boats J/46. We searched for 3 years for our perfect sailboat for sale, when we found it, we knew it was the one. We spent 6 months re-fitting it in Rhode Island and then went for our shakedown voyage in Maine. We stopped in Annapolis for a bit to do some more refit work and offshore modifications, then we set off to the open sea. We went to the Bahamas, Miami, US Virgin Islands, BVI, Grenada, Carriacou, St. Maarten, where we enjoyed outdoor adventures, scuba diving, and have now did an Atlantic Crossing to the Azores where we had a chance to fly our DJI drone (and learned how to fly a drone from a boat) and one of our favorite past times, mountain biking. After leaving the Azores we sailed to Tenerife. From there we have left on a huge voyage, transatlantic again, this time to South America as we head for our goal of rounding cape horn to enter the pacific ocean.
