While crossing the Mona Passage, 35 nautical miles offshore, we ran into trouble with our Yanmar 4JH4E. We were motoring in light winds when we noticed a change in the exhaust pitch — turns out, seawater wasn’t flowing properly. We checked the impeller and, strangely, it looked intact… but it could spin freely by hand — not a good sign. After getting towed back to our anchorage at midnight (huge thanks to Michael, who came out and saved us!), we dug deeper and discovered that the gear inside the old water pump had worn down badly. It turns out the pump wasn’t making full contact with the internal gear, likely due to an aftermarket impeller and shallow gear engagement. We ordered a new OEM water pump from R&B Power in San Juan, and they were awesome — super responsive and got us the part
Essenza - the meaning of the journey The journey of a couple - John Pott and Manuela Visani - respectively Australian and Italian, in the construction of their catamaran Essenza. Living an alternative life in North Queensland, in the town of Bowen, at the top of the Whitsundays Islands, the married couple shares their experience in the building process of Essenza while also working and slowing down to the simple things in life in the beautiful area of the Great Barrier Reef. They are following the design plan of the boat builder Peter Snell: a 41 foot catamaran. Their goal is to have an alternative lifestyle living aboard. The movies, once the boat is completed, will show also their very personal experience on board through life and the ocean.
The Power of Sail Area-to-Displacement Ratio (SA/D) in Catamaran Design. Welcome to Navel Gazing at Camp David Shorts. I'm your host, Johnathan. In today's short video, we'll uncover "The Power of Sail Area-to-Displacement Ratio (SA/D) in Catamaran Design." Learn how this crucial ratio impacts a catamaran's sailing performance, acceleration, and ability to handle various wind conditions. Discover the secrets to a smoother, faster ride on the high seas. For more in-depth knowledge on this topic, I recommend reading: "The Principles of Yacht Design" by Lars Larsson and Rolf Eliasson, published by McGraw-Hill Education (2000). "High-Performance Sailing" by Frank Bethwaite, published by Adlard Coles (2009). Don't forget to like, share, and subscribe to Navel Gazing at Camp David for more maritime insights. ► Full test in Multihulls World N°202: https://www.multihulls-world.com/review/catamaran/excess-13-is-the-range-getting-its-second-wind ► The Excess 13 has undoubtedly been one of the most eagerly awaited World Premieres at La Grande-Motte... this model is indeed unlike any other, starting with the fact that it bears a somewhat risky name – but we love it! And almost as a punchline to complete the joke, 13 units were sold on the opening day of the show... More seriously though, the main new thing about this catamaran is the signature it bears. The Lombard design team has been at work here, in collaboration with Jean Marc Piaton for the interior design. We discovered a nacelle of contained volume (as evidenced by the very wide side-decks), a galley that opens onto the cockpit, and fold-down sugarscoops. We like the futuristic design of the davits and the imposing span of the folding helm seats and the airy design of their protective biminis. Also noteworthy is a water recovery system on the coachroof, easy-access circuit breakers (at last) in a dedicated locker, and cabin doors that double as closet doors. The Excess 13 is available in 3- and 4-cabin versions with standard or Pulse Line rigs. ► TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS Builder: Excess Architect: Marc Lombard Yacht Design Group Length overall: 42’7” (12.99 m) Beam: 23’9” (7.25 m) Draft: 4’10” (1.48 m) Displacement: 23,370 lbs (10.6 t) Sail area: 1,238/1,335 sq ft (115/124 m²) Engine: 2 x 40 HP Fuel: 2 x 53 US gal (2 x 200 l) Water: 79 or 158 US gal (300 or 600 l) ► Become a FREE SUBSCRIBER to Multihulls World's YouTube page now - https://www.youtube.com/c/MultihullsWorld ► Log on to our website to discover over 600 multihulls tests!
